As i see in a previous comment, these were inexperienced firefighters who had never dealt with a real fire. It is sad that a department trying to show off for their town would let two extremely green probies do such a thing without proper instruction. I wish a full recovery from this incident and hope the department learns and never lets it happen again.

There wasn't superior officers there. This was a brand new department, that built the building to show the people in the town what the new fire department could do. Sadly, I don't think they were impressed the right way.

FIREFIGHTER GEAR IS MEANT TO WITHSTAND HEAT, NOT DIRECT FLAME OF A FULLY INVOLVED FIRE. Regardless of whether or not it was a live burn. This was OBVIOUSLY the work of inexperienced firefighters, an inexperience department, and inexperienced chiefs/officers in charge. There is NEVER a time where you would crawl/walk/go into a structure like that. It does not matter WHO or WHAT is in there, the first rule of a firefighter is personal safety. The point is not to become the victim yourself.

I was just at conference with Chief Mittendorf, the way he explained it, this was a department in Pennsylvania, these FF's had NEVER been to a real fire before, only at a regional training facility where the flames are controlled by someone else, and the heat is minimal compared to this. This was a demonstration in front of about 200 people to show off the new department or new whatever, and they did it EXACTLY the same way you would go into a controlled area, note the way they entered...

...the building, just as you would at a training facility. They had absolutely NO experience other than that. They didn't realize just HOW hot the devil can get, and waltzed right into his home. They were medivaced and both survived. I believe the second one in was a female. Stupid, dumb asses, idiots...all these words are something we would say, but we are experienced, they walked in with no clue. "Sad" is a better word. I'm sure they never made that mistake again.

Thanks for the explanation. It sure seemed as if they were new to the "game". Poor judgement on the more expirienced collegues who let them do this though. My firehouse has a yearly open house and we let the newby`s help with the kids games and the demo`s are left to the more expirienced ff`s.

Get with the picture?Been a FF for 10 years! in the uk we have high press' hosereels that can knock down temp/hold back flashover with spray mist of a few cupfuls of water.These guys are just showin off and lookin retarded at the same time.Correct PPE and gettin even a cumbersome 45m jet in would change conditions for entry in no time.Dont try to patronise me, entry procedure+equipment would sort this plus a vent for the gases at the back to lower the temp,Simple problem....Simple solution!

The water will evaporate in a couple of seconds because of the intense heat; the only useful thing would be knocking down most of the fire BEFORE ever attempting an "aggressive" attack.

I realise youre not,but i am.If you do your research british fire developlment understanding has advanced.You'd be amazed at what high pressure hosereels can do.They lower compartment temp massively together with branch techniques,but what these guys have done is not set in place a safe system of work or a vent to direct any potential flashover to the back of the box.

@galiean251 hmm, well when I was a vol ff in PA we did live burn exercises. I went a way to college and thus gave it up, but it was an interesting experience. However even tho that was almost 20 years ago, I still know not to do what those guys did. You turnout gear will protect you to a degree but it will not keep you safe if you go directly into a fire.
