Hey great tutorial. I have a couple questions though. I've got all my faders and knobs assigned. I've also got the "Modes" assigned to there own button like you said. Change the Class to Mode Change, and select the wanted instrument. It changes the modes, in the controller assignment parameter but it doesn't actually change the instrument. I don't know what i'm doing wrong.
HI everybody! Anyone have figure out any assignments for NI Battery! I have an Axiom and want to assign pads to battery for playing drum sounds!! pls help..very mice tutorial i have already assign everything!!!
Everything works fine....except one not so tiny detail; is it normal that logic 9 keep 'forgetting' the controls I assigned everytime I restart the computer? They still there in the list of control assignment, they just don't work!
one last thing: everytime I open a new project I have to set the midi sync in logic to make it listen to my MPD...is it possible to save that setting? (this last one is a very minor issue anyway...)
Hey, great video! Can you tell me how to reverse an automation setting? I have assigned channel strip pan in logic to knob 1 on my Oxygen 8 and it always moves on it's own. So when I click on a track the pan on that track will move a few degrees to the left or right.
First I don't understand how to even select different parameters in quick access like volume and pan, it seems to just come up on pan when I open it up. Thanks
Hello fellow Dave, great tutorial. What if you have multiple exs24's open and want to switch between them? And also can i save midi assignments? Every time I come back and load a previously used project all my assignments are gone.. which would be so annoying at a gig. Can anyone help me with this?
Hello all fellow Logic users, if you are wondering how to get to the edit page in LOGIC 9 where he says to go to "Options>track automation settings" you simply go to preferences>automation, and from there you can hit edit. Dave you are awesome man, i would never mess with a ninja.
very cool video .. the knobs are programmed but they only affect the parameter once i cant go back affecting values with the twist of the knob..anyone had the same experience ?
awesome videos! except for one thing.. im having a problem. i click the decay knob for my MPK mini to learn it...and when i touch a knob on my mpk nothing happens... im using default settings right out of the box if that helps... do you know what to do? thanks!
PLEASE reply to this comment (seeing as you haven't replied to any of the comments below lol)
your tutorials are a huge help and thanks so much for putting them out here for everyone to use, but i was wondering how you can save these controller assignments, since they are all lost as soon as i close logic and reopen it. also was wondering how to make controller assignments universal to all projects that are opened.
in essence I would like to KEEP the settings without having to set them up again
Hey David, love your video uplaods by the way so thanx so much for keeping them so informative. I have just one issue, when i try and assign a my nanopad or anything to switch modes in the environment window, it crashes logic completely. can you help??
Thank you !! Please keep them going you've really helped me out.Someone should come out with a template that you can import into logic. I glad I know how to set up my axiom now . BTW command K will get you to that menu in logic 9 , the link isn't available in the options menu. Really THANK YOU!!!

Wow - this is in depth and really well presented... do you have a 'tutorial' on setting up Logic with an MPK from scratch, for newbies? So far I have been using my MPK88 with Reason/Record and it works really intuitively... can I just plug and play in Logic?
On my Novation 25 sl mkii this only works once. When I log out of Logic and start a new project or even go back to the one I assigned the controls to the Novation doesn't link even though the assignments are still "Controller Assignments" window.
trying to follow the vid but the 1st thing you say to do isn't there lol
You say go to options then go to track automation but when i go to options there is no track automation...
the list of options is ; audio, marker, tempo, open signature list, step input keyboard, even float, region inspector float, project information, send to midi.
@ProjectWeekend same here. must be my inexperience. and another question: how do i save the assignments? i keep losing them every time i close logic 9
Hey if you go to your Logic Pro tab scroll to Preferences click on Automation at the bottom of the page Automation tab there is a learn button click that then click on the edit and it will be ready for the rest of the video.
Hi,I've enjoy all your video's. `Great Info` I just bought the Korg Nano series yesterday, and I'm not getting any midi assigning, even thou I followed your video step by step.I've never had a midi controller before so it's great when they have guys like yourself that have a vast of experience to help.I'm using a Mac, LP 8 10.6.4..Have any idea's?? ur amazing for putting so much of ur time educating ppl, ive learnt loads from them.
i had a question, im planning to get a MIDI keyboard and i quite like the akai mpk49 but was wondering if there is a better keyboard out there that has drum pads and is in the same price range.
Great video! Very informative. I'm using an Axiom 25 but for some reason, when I assign my knobs to any parameter the parameter only increases in value. For example, when I turn in a clockwise motion the parameter increases and when I turn in a clockwise motion the parameter still increases instead of decreasing. Any ideas??
I'm doing what you're showing, but I can't make the controller be separate. I'm getting the controllers to be linked together, so if I assign the cutoff and resonance separately, the same controller is moving both. How can fix this issue?
is there ANY way to assign the "undo" function to a controller? Logic won't let me even edit the settings for this command. I set my control surface up with the hopes of not having to run back to my computer to undo a take while tracking.
Any suggestions?
Oh, and thank you thank you thank you for all the help you've given. I consider myself semi-adept at using Logic because of you. Props!
thanks a million! been looking for ages on how the controller assignment works. Do you use reason? and if so do you have any videos on how to set up control surfaces for it?
Hey well thanks a lot for all tour dedication to share what you know.
I watched Tip 39 and 40 of controllers assigning wish i been looking for for months and finally... my question is once you do all that, does logic save those assignments for the next time you open a project? I know it sounds silly but I just did all that you said and then logic doesn't seem to remember all this assignments ... thanks again - cheers
Thanks for posting these tutorials. They have been immensely helpful!
Quick Tip on Mode changing. When you set a button push's class to Mode Change and select the mode, the mode in the Value section at the bottom of the Controller Assignments window needs to be set to "Direct" or the mode change won't work.
I had to RTFM this when I tried to follow this tutorial and the mode change was failing. Hopefully this helps someone else who is experiencing a similar issue.
I tried it & It doesn't work. I have the exact same set up as shown here and I tried it his way and your way and the only thing I can get it to do is revert back to the original mode once when I hit ANY of the assigned buttons although I assigned them to do different mode changes.
Example; I will have it in EX1 (my original mode) and I will create and assign a second mode (EX2). When I select either mode with the mouse and hit any assigned button on the Keystation it reverts back to the EX1.
hi i am looking for some body to teach me logic 8 perfectly and i am living in reseda valley is there some body to help me a bout this i really need a teacher
Thanks for this tutorial, well i just buy my Akai MPD 32 and i have a little problem, when i assign the volume for the first piste it runs very well, but next when i want to assign the volum for the seconde piste it doesn't work and the second volume works for the first piste...so if you can say me what is the problem, i will be happy :)
Sorry for my english (come from france )
Bye and respond me please if you know what is my problem
let's say you're recording a song. and you have a knob linked to the cutoff filter, and during recording, you want to tweak the cutoff. how is this done?
because when i hit record, start playing, and tweaking the filter, it only records the notes with the filter set where it was when i started recording...
Did you have an instruemnt already selected as a plug in in your first track? I have assigned these modes to my 'arturia keyborad' zone, however, Im not getting any sounds.
Hey David, thanks a lot for this video. I'm using a Radium 49 and have all my modes assigned for my different synths, but I unfortunately don't have any extra buttons available for quick change of modes. Is there an easy way to set up my keyboard to change modes when I change programs or channels on my keyboard, or is those not even related? Or is there a shortcut key to changing modes, and if so what can I find it under? Thanks!
I try to get into Learn mode but all it says is "Waiting for incoming messages" I click and move sliders and have tried various combinations but I get no response and am not able to assign anything. It's just that same message. My midi pad (Akai MPD 24) works fine and the numbers in the transport under "No In" show that Logic is receiving a signal from the device when i turn knobs and sliders. Is there a step I'm missing?
I produce DubStep and Glitch/Grime/Hop up here in Seattle. Been on reason since 2.0! I swore by it until I saw Logic 8. Though I've ALWAYS been a Mac user, I wasn't interested until I saw a friend show me how in-depth (Logic) is. Now, because of you, Im very proficient at creating, recording , and automating with Logic, and I LOVE it! It's completely changed the way I produce and I just wanted to say thank you, and PLEASE don't stop doing your thing!
dave earl super ninja! great video i just got a bit of problem i cant solve.
i connect my m audio ozone use it as an interferance then i also connect another m audio oxygen 49 which is only midi but always a key or note (una tecla en espa;ol) does not function its really not cool cause we cant play live with it because will never know which note or key wont function that day. i went to store and changed the ma audio have a new one still same problem. hope u have an answere thanks.
I've got some gigs coming up and it's time to get my Axiom 49 to work with Logic
then lock it to a friends KORG electribes
and I'd like to know how you did this video with the mouse highlighted with you in the corner on camera? great stuff.
hoping to be able to click through presents on MASSIVE, ABSYNTH 4 AND VANGUARD and get the Axiom to click up and down for presets on each while being able to trigger loops with the pads on Axiom.
Hey man thanks for this tutorial, I have seen different ways to do this but this is probably the most stable and professional way to set it as it is very well set and makes it easy for future use as you expand and use more of logic and more external devices. I am a software engineer so I am very familiar with objects and classes. Excellent tutorial, thanks again
right so I think I know what's going on, Logic remembers what instrument channel the synth was loaded on, so to fix this I have to go in and tell logic which channel the synth I want to control in inserted on. Is there not a way so it remembers the assignments regardless of channel ?
hmmm, got this working with my Emu Xboard 61, but if I save as a template Autoload, should Logic remember the assignments made ?
At the moment when I load up the Autoload, if I hit the buttons to change mode it works but turning the knobs Logic doesn't seem to remember the assignments even though they are listed ?!?
A little tip to include with tutorial for everyone.
When using a button to change between each mode created ensure that the mode in the Value section is set to "Direct" otherwise pressing the button more than once will toggle through each mode you have created.
Hi Dave, great tutorials, I have a question regarding the controller assignment:
I managed to set up various instruments following your tutorial and was wondering if there was a way to assign the controls to work on more than one instance of the same instrument?
I am only able to control the one used from the channel I set it up on. Is there a setting that makes this global to each instrument? I've looked in the manual but had no luck.
thankyou so much for all that you have helped me with. i have a problem with this; when i try to program the "modes" i get a message saying "This control is already assigned to another parameter." i just hit reassign but it will not remain in the "no mode" field! it jumps into the next "mode", in this case my esx 24. i cant get more than one mode change setting to stay in that no mode field at a timewhich defeats the purpose of even having one at all.
Question... Why does Logic force you to switch between modes? Why cant it just be "smart" by automatically choosing the mode depending on what instrument is selected?
Having to switch between modes everytime you select a new instrument seems highly counter-intuitive.
I use modes when I'm on stage so that I don't have to hit the mouse at all to change tracks, assignments, or bring any window to the foreground. I'll try to explain this more in depth later....
zodiacie same thing happened to me and I just clicked on that radio option button that is "off" above it to on and then it lets you click on it, then I just turned the radio button off again.
Yep. It's a little tweaky. Check out platinumnutz. He's on to it. Usually Logic will ask for a controller for quick access. Once that is set up, everything else should work properly.
i may be wrong, but in your videos, it looks like you're using an m-audio axiom (is it 88?).
i'm using an axiom 49, and i'm having problems with getting all the knobs and sliders to work properly. also, the play, record, et cetera... buttons don't work at all.
i used to use FL Studio, and remember having to hit recall and going through the programs to get it to work properly, but i'm not sure what to do with logic...
do you think you could post a really quick video on this?
Hey Dave, I have the Axiom 49. and I noticed that i had 1 fader (#9) that controlled the volume on my selected track and knb that controlled pan, They were the only buttons I could see that were programmed when I got the keyboard. My question is, how can I change those? They dont show up in any noes or modes.
Hi Dave great tutorial, but i've got 1 problem!I have Logic 8 express and korg nanoKontrol. and i can't assign transport button. why??? or how to do this?
Setting up controllers made simple! Just what a simpleton like me needed I've been struggling to get this working properly, but your vid has made it so clear. Thank you so much Dave, you totally rock.
Hi David, mata you're a real life saver i have to say! just a quick question, when is part 2 coming? i'm looking to buy a controler, thought about the NOVATION SL but the automap software is not so useful for Logic Plugins so waiting to learn more.
hey thanks david earl. Dude, I'm using a 003 factory mixer, and I'm wondering if you know how to use the midi mode to sync the faders with Logic? It would be really sweet if I could do some mixer automation!
i'm curious about that crossfader at the end of the week.how about showing how to create crossfadercurves as well(if it's possible....if it is,i'm getting the upgrade to logic pro at once........just gonna buy some good runningshoes before that,or build my own millenium falcon......then my nextdoor neighbour can be CHEWBACCA......and she's a woman......GULP.....)
Keep on the good work and best wishes for a great 2009!
btw. Funny route to go to Logic's Controller Assignments ;-) It's normally found under Logic Pro > Preferences > Control Surfaces > Controller Assignments... or Command-K
this is really interesting.you know,i have had logic express for a while now,and your tutorials are REALLY GOOD!!!i've used ableton live for two years now as my d.a.w,and it's excellent, but seeing tutorials like this shows me that logic is much more mature in nature(and more complex i guess)now if only logic had a crossfader..........or do you have a tip for doing that as well?anyway, all the best to you!
another great video. something is freaking out on me. i used my axiom religiously and flawlessly at that, with ableton, and now, when i go to get the axiom to control faders, i will a) select "learn mode" then b) ciick on the channel 1 fader, then c) move the corresponding axiom fader then d) de-select "learn mode" then, (and it continues to be weird the farther down i go) the fader i moved on the axiom moves the 5th fader in logic! (that i never selected) has anyone else had that problem?
but how do you assign transport controls to, say, and axiom 49? it's got those nice transport controls right on it, but i cant figure out how to tell logic to respond to them.
You can assign transport controls in the Key COmmands window. Using the Axiom is easy.
Hit Option-K. Under the 'Global Commands' category, Select 'Play' or any other control. In the lower right you'll see 'Learn Mode'. Hit that, hit the button on your Axiom, and you're there!!!
but now that i've assigned those, when i press play or stop, it seems like i have to press them twice. also, when i press play, the playhead moves forward a bar, and then plays. is that something i have to change on the axiom itself?
aha! no, i had to set the data 2 and data3 values for each button to 127, rather than 0 and 127, respectively. that way each time i press the button, it sends the full value, which activates the key command. otherwise, it only activates the command every other button press, when it sends 127.
that is what i am trying to do, i get it to work, but it wants to assign the wrong fadders to the wrong logic faders... the 1st fader goes to the corresponding 1st fader, then the 2nd fader gets assigned to logics fader on channel 4.... its crazy... even the window says its assigned to channel 2..
erhagan, thanks for asking this. I was having the same problem with my Edirol PCR-300. David, you are unquestionably "the man"!
If you weren't already planing to, you might want to mention the Key Commands window in your Assigning Controllers Part II.
I can't thank you enough for taking the time to publish these videos. For a guitar player seeking to broaden the skills, your videos are a godsend. Thanks again!
Sometimes Logic's instruments seems to 'lose sight' of my knob twiddling and doesn't pick up any automation data. It does this randomly but very often.
I have a Remote SL ( Novation ) and it is making my head hurt. Please help.I tried what you said but the machines are beating me up.I know Logic and Automaps aren't speaking.I just found out.
Goodday ninja-san. Thanks for all the tuts theyve really helped me! But I had a question about these control assignments. I have an oxygen 8 with 8 rotary controllers. Would it be possible to have each controller linked to one specific instrument control (cutoff, attack etc.) wich for each instrument would be the same? So you can just switch tracks and the controls follow with wich track is selected.
This is so clutch. Thanks! One of the best tutorials out there.

I had to RTFM this when I tried to follow this tutorial and the mode change was failing. Hopefully this helps someone else who is experiencing a similar issue.

Nice... The mode change thing has been killin' for a couple hours. I just thought now to check the comments. I will try it out. Thanks.

When I select either mode with the mouse and hit any assigned button on the Keystation it reverts back to the EX1.

let's say you're recording a song. and you have a knob linked to the cutoff filter, and during recording, you want to tweak the cutoff. how is this done?
because when i hit record, start playing, and tweaking the filter, it only records the notes with the filter set where it was when i started recording...

Great Stuff -
I've got some gigs coming up and it's time to get my Axiom 49 to work with Logic
then lock it to a friends KORG electribes
and I'd like to know how you did this video with the mouse highlighted with you in the corner on camera? great stuff.
hoping to be able to click through presents on MASSIVE, ABSYNTH 4 AND VANGUARD and get the Axiom to click up and down for presets on each while being able to trigger loops with the pads on Axiom.
any help would be awesome
Thanks

Hey man thanks for this tutorial, I have seen different ways to do this but this is probably the most stable and professional way to set it as it is very well set and makes it easy for future use as you expand and use more of logic and more external devices. I am a software engineer so I am very familiar with objects and classes. Excellent tutorial, thanks again

right so I think I know what's going on, Logic remembers what instrument channel the synth was loaded on, so to fix this I have to go in and tell logic which channel the synth I want to control in inserted on. Is there not a way so it remembers the assignments regardless of channel ?
FFUCManc 3 years ago
hmmm, got this working with my Emu Xboard 61, but if I save as a template Autoload, should Logic remember the assignments made ?
At the moment when I load up the Autoload, if I hit the buttons to change mode it works but turning the knobs Logic doesn't seem to remember the assignments even though they are listed ?!?

P.S. (Ran out of text!)

Thanks
Bryan

thankyou so much for all that you have helped me with. i have a problem with this; when i try to program the "modes" i get a message saying "This control is already assigned to another parameter." i just hit reassign but it will not remain in the "no mode" field! it jumps into the next "mode", in this case my esx 24. i cant get more than one mode change setting to stay in that no mode field at a timewhich defeats the purpose of even having one at all.

Q: I also have an AXIOM 61 - how do you assign the drum pads to the Ultrabeat?
Datty77 3 years ago
Question... Why does Logic force you to switch between modes? Why cant it just be "smart" by automatically choosing the mode depending on what instrument is selected?
Having to switch between modes everytime you select a new instrument seems highly counter-intuitive.
aldenteamor 3 years ago
I use modes when I'm on stage so that I don't have to hit the mouse at all to change tracks, assignments, or bring any window to the foreground. I'll try to explain this more in depth later....

Dave when I go to Options > Track automation > Track Automation Settings the edit button is dimmed though I can see you can click it on yours.

Though I can if I go Pref > Controller Surfaces > Controller Assignments - I reach the same screen

NILPOINTZERO 2 years ago
Yep. It's a little tweaky. Check out platinumnutz. He's on to it. Usually Logic will ask for a controller for quick access. Once that is set up, everything else should work properly.
SFLogicNinja 2 years ago
i may be wrong, but in your videos, it looks like you're using an m-audio axiom (is it 88?).
i'm using an axiom 49, and i'm having problems with getting all the knobs and sliders to work properly. also, the play, record, et cetera... buttons don't work at all.
i used to use FL Studio, and remember having to hit recall and going through the programs to get it to work properly, but i'm not sure what to do with logic...
do you think you could post a really quick video on this?
NILPOINTZERO 2 years ago
Hey Dave, I have the Axiom 49. and I noticed that i had 1 fader (#9) that controlled the volume on my selected track and knb that controlled pan, They were the only buttons I could see that were programmed when I got the keyboard. another great video. something is freaking out on me. i used my axiom religiously and flawlessly at that, with ableton, and now, when i go to get the axiom to control faders, i will a) select "learn mode" then b) ciick on the channel 1 fader, then c) move the corresponding axiom fader then d) de-select "learn mode" then, (and it continues to be weird the farther down i go) the fader i moved on the axiom moves the 5th fader in logic! (that i never selected) has anyone else had that problem?
purity4your11 3 years ago
but how do you assign transport controls to, say, and axiom 49? it's got those nice transport controls right on it, but i cant figure out how to tell logic to respond to them.
erhagan 3 years ago
You can assign transport controls in the Key COmmands window. Using the Axiom is easy.
Hit Option-K. Under the 'Global Commands' category, Select 'Play' or any other control. In the lower right you'll see 'Learn Mode'. Hit that, hit the button on your Axiom, and you're there!!!
SFLogicNinja 3 years ago
oh, i see that now.
but now that i've assigned those, when i press play or stop, it seems like i have to press them twice. also, when i press play, the playhead moves forward a bar, and then plays. is that something i have to change on the axiom itself?
erhagan 3 years ago
You should clear the automation settings you made and try again. It seems they are toggling.
Did you try to set this in automation settings as well? Could be there's a message getting repeated.
*bows*
SFLogicNinja 3 years ago
aha! no, i had to set the data 2 and data3 values for each button to 127, rather than 0 and 127, respectively. that way each time i press the button, it sends the full value, which activates the key command. otherwise, it only activates the command every other button press, when it sends 127.
erhagan 3 years ago
* im referring to controls on the axiom itself
erhagan 3 years ago
also, since i got you replying, is there a way to assign the faders on the axiom to the faders on the mixer page?
erhagan 3 years ago
that is what i am trying to do, i get it to work, but it wants to assign the wrong fadders to the wrong logic faders... the 1st fader goes to the corresponding 1st fader, then the 2nd fader gets assigned to logics fader on channel 4.... its crazy... even the window says its assigned to channel 2..
HELP!!!!

erhagan, thanks for asking this. I was having the same problem with my Edirol PCR-300. David, you are unquestionably "the man"!
If you weren't already planing to, you might want to mention the Key Commands window in your Assigning Controllers Part II.

Love your vids but i have trouble:
Sometimes Logic's instruments seems to 'lose sight' of my knob twiddling and doesn't pick up any automation data. It does this randomly but very often.
It's hurting my head. Help!!!
magicmunky76 3 years ago
Two things...
Make sure the controllers are always plugged in to your computer BEFORE logic is turned on. This will assign the ports correctly
Also be sure to turn the knobs all the way from left to right when you are on a parameter. This nulls the fader/knob, and gets it ready to rock.
*bows*
SFLogicNinja 3 years ago
That fixed it! I was plugging the controller in as Logic was starting, not before.
Thanks very much.

Many thanks!!
