I just believe that it's much harder to successfully pull this move on someone with a very low and strong stance and permission to hit the neck. This move is so popular in the MMA circuit because there is hardly a way to defend against it, according to the rules anyways. It's one of the few moves which leave you defenseless, but you can't hit'em because it's illegal. Normally you would pound the neck, but that's illegal.

McDonald was primarily a K1 fighter. If the rules were K1 instead of MMA, I think McDonald would have won. With MMA rules, McDonald had no chance. Like Toney vs Couture: because the fight was MMA and not Queensbury rules, Toney had zero chance. Klichko would have no chance against Couture in an MMA fight. Couture would get knocked out in a boxing match with Klichko. It all depends on what rules govern the fight.

Hardly anybody ever tries the forearm choke in UFC. It's easy enough to apply from full and half guard and it doesn't put you in a bad position if it fails. Doesn't burn your arms out like some chokes do, either. Maybe it's illegal, like a stranglehold. If not, hope Lyoto uses it on Rampage tomorrow!

the reason they dont use that choke is because of the escape is so easy. if you look sideways the choke doesnt work. alle you have to do is twist your head 90 degrees.

But if you've got your left hand pulling your right wrist (or arm, if you have long forearms), working like a lever under their left shoulder, and keep your right elbow close in and on the mat, you cut off quite a bit of turning room, provided you've got their right leg tied up. Even if you don't get the tap, it wears on them and costs you virtually nothing.
