after getting to see Neil Finn live, i wish they'd played this song, but they still rocked the house down! this live version of "One Step Ahead" is amazing, and i will always keep it revered in my heart
another note to my comment: first, if you don't want your li'l brother taking over, ya shouldn't invite him into the band, especially if he's younger and imo cuter! LOL second, Tim wanted to make some solo music, so of course he left Split Enz to do that. everyone wants to move on eventually when they feel the need to do so.
i don't know what the brothers' Finn were about at that time of the Split Enz split, but i do remember watching interviews with them both where both say that Tim asked his brother to join Split Enz. as for after Neil took over as lead singer (both for Split Enz and eventually Crowded House), they still weren't really well known or appreciated by U.S. media. sad but true. both bands were amazing, and both Finn brothers should be revered for their work.
If Neil doesnt join the Enz they would be the another Mother Goose, or moving pictures. Relevent to their time, underestimated, but largely forgotten.
Poor poor Tim. He was going so well being frontmanof his own kickass band, and then Neil comes out of nowhere with no prior experience, and just writes I Got You and History Never Repeats and basically outdoes everything Tim ever wrote. They both hated each other's guts off-camera, which is why Neil kicked Tim out of Woodface. And then there's the stories that Neil played mind games with Seymour and Hester and threated to disband CH if they didn't give him full creative control...
Niel is the way better muso no arguments here, his compliations prove he is one of the best musicians/songwriters on earth and I vote for Australian song of the year each year as a full writer of APRA and look up to Niel as the God of songwriting period!
This is such a great song, and I love this performance. Even though they'd been around for a while at this point, they're still so young here. I wish radio stations would play more stuff like this. It's really cool to hear Eddie's keyboard parts on this live, too. He's amazing!
It was great hearing Neil's voice singing live without all that processing. The album tracks and videos sound great, but this puts so much more into my recollection of the song. Thank you for posting it!
He was missing that tooth for several years. He didn't replace it until sometime after the first CH album. Though he is my favorite artist of all time, I am not so obsessive that I can tell you exactly when and where....
@dalipardon i'll admit, i've become a bit obsessed with when Neil fixed that tooth. i'm actually sorry he did cuz he was sexy as all get out with that tooth missing. of course, he is still sexy now so it doesn't really matter! LOL
I remember back in the day I would be working and Split Enz would come on the radio and I would just start be booping around :) Some things never change, I find my self doing the same thing Now! Love The Split Enz :) They are right up there with Crowed House
i listened to them play this is melbourne last year and i was blown away. i had tingles up my spine and goosebumps and was teary and shaking and thrilled and completely enchanted.
this is such an incredible, incredible song and to hear it interpreted like this freaking amazing. wow wow wow.
Neil should have been one step ahead on Tim's wannabe "the capatain & tenille" dufus jealous face!!! puleez, everyone who is anyone knows that NEIL is the real & only talent in that crew smoochies Neil xo : D
Oh, I'm so jealous! I missed going to their Melb. concert last year and was so disappointed in myself. Oh, if only they could do another concert here!
Awesome musicians and cool people. I remember a 60 minutes type story done way back about exploiting women in the music industry and the lead singer was speaking out about his respect women and how they should tastfully resembled to the public eye. Ahh a cute singer and a gentleman. What more could a girl want.
So happy to see this video. This was the first concert I was allowed to attend without my parents as a teenager, at the Great Hall in Hamilton Place, Ontario 1982. Still have the Time & Tide pins they sold in the lobby!
I'm sorry. PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
This is fantastic! I've been watching it over and over. I watched Fire Drill, too, but do you have the rest of the concert? If so, do you plan to put the rest of it up? It would be very much appreciated by someone who did not have MTV when this aired.
You are not the first person to ask me this! I do have the concert in its entirety. Our PC that has the video transfer software has been down for months, and I can't do it on my Mac. I would LOVE to post the rest of the concert for everyone to enjoy. I just hope everyone can wait a little longer!
I'm happy to wait a little longer. Matter of fact, I'm thrilled to, just knowing that it will come. Wonderful news! I'll subscribe so's I know whenever it's available. Thank you!
I always liked this song. It's hot and sexy ! It even sounds so good performed here live. I was 11 years old in 1982. I remember when the video for this song was on Mtv. Thx for upload.
I so remember this! I was about 12 or so when MTV aired this. It was from Hamilton (I have a great memory when it comes to NF). I really remember this song because Neil doesn't quite hit the last "close" in "when I hold you close" at the end. Thanks for posting this, I wish I could see the entire concert!
Oh wow. I remember recording this entire concert from MTV when they broadcast it, and watching it over and over... and convincing my boyfriend at the time to get a haircut like Neil's. Ha.
Being in a successful band with your brother sounds like the most fun ever.

Neil is one of the most underrated artists of our time.
His songs and vocal talent have stayed just below the pop/top 40 radar. (save "Don't Dream It's Over")
This video shows how great he really was. Very original songs, inspired melodies, near perfectly executed vocal parts.
I'd go see him live, wouldn't you?
