  • Being in a successful band with your brother sounds like the most fun ever.

  • I have this video (original) and had it for the best part of 30 years, now put on to dvd and hard drive... it's an amazing concert in Hamilton

  • That is some awesome facial hair, Noel :D

  • Check out the analogue synths in the background--Totally Awesome!

  • I luv this song, but gee Neil is so out of tune on this vid

  • Btw, THANK YOU so much for posting this video!

  • Neil is so adorably boyish . . . the Paul McCartney of NZ . . . or perhaps Glen Tilbrook

  • after getting to see Neil Finn live, i wish they'd played this song, but they still rocked the house down! this live version of "One Step Ahead" is amazing, and i will always keep it revered in my heart

  • as a young girl, Neil is the boy i fell for. as a happily married woman, i am totally in love with his music and talent! wow how time goes by! WOW!

  • so what year was this performed?

  • How about uploading the rest of the video? My favourite song from that concert was Giant Heartbeat.

  • another note to my comment: first, if you don't want your li'l brother taking over, ya shouldn't invite him into the band, especially if he's younger and imo cuter! LOL second, Tim wanted to make some solo music, so of course he left Split Enz to do that. everyone wants to move on eventually when they feel the need to do so.

  • i don't know what the brothers' Finn were about at that time of the Split Enz split, but i do remember watching interviews with them both where both say that Tim asked his brother to join Split Enz. as for after Neil took over as lead singer (both for Split Enz and eventually Crowded House), they still weren't really well known or appreciated by U.S. media. sad but true. both bands were amazing, and both Finn brothers should be revered for their work.

  • If Neil doesnt join the Enz they would be the another Mother Goose, or moving pictures. Relevent to their time, underestimated, but largely forgotten.

What a genius he was really

  • Poor poor Tim. He was going so well being frontmanof his own kickass band, and then Neil comes out of nowhere with no prior experience, and just writes I Got You and History Never Repeats and basically outdoes everything Tim ever wrote. They both hated each other's guts off-camera, which is why Neil kicked Tim out of Woodface. And then there's the stories that Neil played mind games with Seymour and Hester and threated to disband CH if they didn't give him full creative control...

  • @SpencerIves

Get your facts right mate, they had a little disagreement during the split enz time but have been close as ever for the past 20 years

  • OY! Neil was so sexy... still is! I'll sing along with Neil forever! LOL

  • Why do people think they're Australian? They're from Te Awamutu in New Zealand

  • @carlitojonesius

Who cares? Only Kiwis get all upset over who's from what country. Still when youre the smaller cousin in the relationship, Im not suprised.

  • Come on man we gotta have something. Our national bird the kiwi cant even fly!

  • Niel is the way better muso no arguments here, his compliations prove he is one of the best musicians/songwriters on earth and I vote for Australian song of the year each year as a full writer of APRA and look up to Niel as the God of songwriting period!

  • I had front row seats for the Winnipeg show of this tour!

  • My uncle toured with these guys. He was in The Attitudes.

  • I saw them on this tour ,The Payolas opened for them.Great double bill.

  • Man! I haven't seen this concert footage since it was premiered on MTV back in 1982! Then again in 1987.

Remember when MTV would show rock concerts every Saturday night back in 81' and 82?

  • yes, i remember seeing this on MTV back in the day. i guess i am not alone.

  • hello bitch mwahahhahahahhahah

  • Neil's brother was quite the smart ass introducing this song....I heard he fought with his brother alot

  • dude they're brothers get over it thats what brothers do. and names tim douche

  • Tim was the jealous older douche you douche. Tim hated life when Neil hit the scene.

  • No wonder Crowded House were so good. Neil was already so accomplished before it started

  • These guys are just awesome..i can never get tired of their music

  • I used to have this concert on VHS untill I taped over it. I have regretted it ever since.

I've learned to play this song in a jazz version too. :-)

  • Neil is one of the most underrated artists of our time.

His songs and vocal talent have stayed just below the pop/top 40 radar. (save "Don't Dream It's Over")

This video shows how great he really was. Very original songs, inspired melodies, near perfectly executed vocal parts.

I'd go see him live, wouldn't you?

  • I forgot how much I love Neil Finn! So cute!

  • He also has always had SUCH a beautiful voice!

  • I've always wished I could get this whole concert on DVD, VHS, anything!

  • YUM

  • Awsome

  • This is such a great song, and I love this performance. Even though they'd been around for a while at this point, they're still so young here. I wish radio stations would play more stuff like this. It's really cool to hear Eddie's keyboard parts on this live, too. He's amazing!

  • Neil Finn is a songsmith maaster.

  • It was great hearing Neil's voice singing live without all that processing. The album tracks and videos sound great, but this puts so much more into my recollection of the song. Thank you for posting it!

  • Cornelius "Neil" Mullane Finn born May 27 1958 in Te Awamutu New Zealand - see Wikipedia - all info on Neil & Tim

  • i think Neil is cute and still cute.

  • Why is Neil missing one of his teeth in every video from this era?

  • He was missing that tooth for several years. He didn't replace it until sometime after the first CH album. Though he is my favorite artist of all time, I am not so obsessive that I can tell you exactly when and where....

  • hehehe thanks for the info :)

I was wondering that from watching the "I Got You" video, and then he had a tooth there in the CH videos. Thanks again

    <3

  • @dalipardon i'll admit, i've become a bit obsessed with when Neil fixed that tooth. i'm actually sorry he did cuz he was sexy as all get out with that tooth missing. of course, he is still sexy now so it doesn't really matter! LOL

  • I remember back in the day I would be working and Split Enz would come on the radio and I would just start be booping around :) Some things never change, I find my self doing the same thing Now! Love The Split Enz :) They are right up there with Crowed House

  • blow me down.

i listened to them play this is melbourne last year and i was blown away. i had tingles up my spine and goosebumps and was teary and shaking and thrilled and completely enchanted.

this is such an incredible, incredible song and to hear it interpreted like this freaking amazing. wow wow wow.

  • i reckon neals pretty good to,but remember tim sings too!and without the rest neal would sound...strange!talk about no credit!

  • Neil should have been one step ahead on Tim's wannabe "the capatain & tenille" dufus jealous face!!! puleez, everyone who is anyone knows that NEIL is the real & only talent in that crew smoochies Neil xo : D

  • did i just sense tim being a jealous older brother dickhead?!

  • Yes, I think you did!!! Neil is better anyway...LOL! :)

  • Its actually spelt neal(i think)

  • No...it's spelled Neil, trust me!

  • yes i also love this song from split enz where in my own opinion they dont make music this good anymore.

  • Neil Finn is a song writing genius.

  • Fantastic! If anyone's got any more vintage live footage of the Enz, upload it please!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Performance!

Really envious of anyone who gets to see them next year in NZ. I really wish they'd do a few gigs in the UK, especially in Manchester.

I would love to see them live.

  • i'm going to the concert!i think they might do their last world tour

  • Oh, I'm so jealous! I missed going to their Melb. concert last year and was so disappointed in myself. Oh, if only they could do another concert here!

  • I sure hope they finally do a world tour!!!! I'm sick of missing out!

  • Awesome musicians and cool people. I remember a 60 minutes type story done way back about exploiting women in the music industry and the lead singer was speaking out about his respect women and how they should tastfully resembled to the public eye. Ahh a cute singer and a gentleman. What more could a girl want.

  • So happy to see this video. This was the first concert I was allowed to attend without my parents as a teenager, at the Great Hall in Hamilton Place, Ontario 1982. Still have the Time & Tide pins they sold in the lobby!

    Please post more.....

  • love your screen name dali...hehe - I've been an Enz fan since the 70's - this is great stuff - hope you can salvage the rest of this concert!

  • This is fantastic! I've been watching it over and over. I watched Fire Drill, too, but do you have the rest of the concert? If so, do you plan to put the rest of it up? It would be very much appreciated by someone who did not have MTV when this aired.

  • You are not the first person to ask me this! I do have the concert in its entirety. Our PC that has the video transfer software has been down for months, and I can't do it on my Mac. I would LOVE to post the rest of the concert for everyone to enjoy. I just hope everyone can wait a little longer!

  • I'm happy to wait a little longer. Matter of fact, I'm thrilled to, just knowing that it will come. Wonderful news! I'll subscribe so's I know whenever it's available. Thank you!

  • Neil is even hot with makeup on!!! I love him :)

  • His voice has matured over the years...

  • Great live performance of this nice Enz tune.

  • I always liked this song. It's hot and sexy ! It even sounds so good performed here live. I was 11 years old in 1982. I remember when the video for this song was on Mtv. Thx for upload.

  • This is amazing! Thanks for posting it. Wow!!!

  • What a magic voice not like some of the singers out there that need the recorded version to mouth to :)

  • Hey it's been over a year since this was added, where's the rest?

  • Where's Noel?!?

  • Noel's on the drums. It was during the period between Malcom Green and Paul Hester.

  • Split Enz have always been my inspiration. Frenz of the Enz!

  • haha, frenz of the enz, that website my dads on it!

    Michael Barker

    lol im tristan

  • Ha ha. I'm not that old! I'm Aaron - feel free to send messages to aaronryanmusic.

  • I have always loved this song.. brings back great memories for me because this is the very first song I ever saw on MTV.. damn I'm old !!!

  • Neil looks so cute!

But Tim is stunning. I love him.

  • Yes, this is one of my favorite Enz songs... Thanks for the post! Cheers! ;)

  • I saw Split Enz around this time in Melbourne Australia

at one of the small pub venues in 1982. They were a great live band.

  • Thanks for posting this...I lerved them in the 80s

  • It was Hamilton Ontario I had the tape on Beta. Thanks for the memories!

  • I so remember this! I was about 12 or so when MTV aired this. It was from Hamilton (I have a great memory when it comes to NF). I really remember this song because Neil doesn't quite hit the last "close" in "when I hold you close" at the end. Thanks for posting this, I wish I could see the entire concert!

  • Thanks for posting this! Nice seeing Neil playing the Les Paul in this one.

  • Neil is such a little cutie pie here!! Grat video. Thanks for sharing.....

  • Woah, their harmonies are absolutely perfect. How much do I luff the brothers Finn?

  • thank you for posting my favorite video from the 80's, and for your name - "dalipardon"

    ahaha

  • Love this song...;)

  • Oh wow. I remember recording this entire concert from MTV when they broadcast it, and watching it over and over... and convincing my boyfriend at the time to get a haircut like Neil's. Ha.

  • awesome. The Finn brothers are great song writers
