  • ummmm...absolutely speechless!!!! so much so that all i can type is..."absolutely speechless!"

  • This is just about as good as music gets. Two people in perfect balance.

  • Powerful song, powerful woman to not only cut the guys' throat, but then tell his ghost it's got no right to give her any sass about it. Awesome!! Most of my favorite folk and olde english music has somebody dyin' and this has got that plus rape and alcohol abuse, all given the forceful treatment it deserves. Again I say: AWESOME!!

  • Please pardon this next comment.

I don't believe in witches. But, seriously, did you see that? Gillian is completely on fire. That's the very most believable performance in this style of music I've ever seen. Wow. That's just one hell of a performance.

  • Crazy! That's one nutzball performance. Holy moly. I don't think I've ever seen anything so powerful. What a treasure. Laid lo, me. Wow. Crazy. Nutz. Crazy good.

  • Yes, Rawlings is on fire. But Gillian Welch.....Lord have Mercy!

  • An incredible song about an abusive man who may or may not have been killed.

  • @iadorenewyork1 Reckon she killed the bastard alright. Otherwise what's his ghost up to?

  • David is playing murder with his fingers.

  • Susanna Sanessa is MEJOR ^^ italian version

  • Susanna Sanessa is MEJOR ^^

  • Rawlings makes this great

  • WOW !!!

  • O.

    M.

    G.

  • With material so potent one is as inspired as the punk rock verve exhibited by David Rawlings and Gill.

  • david rawlings , burnin up that fretboard wow

  • Rawlings is cooler than the other side of the pillow.

  • He deserved it....the angels were around - for once.

  • If that audience had only been able to hear what we can hear through headphones they'd have been jumping out of their skin!

  • @EarthAdvocate if only we were there to experience it live!!! music is meant to be heard live. such a treat.

  • Ah, cousin Caleb, what an evil bastard you are. No wonder I love to play villains.

  • what kind of guitar is Rawlings playing here?

  • @bastlake 1935 Epiphone Olympic archtop - Fretboard Journal, Summer 2010

  • @t6249 Wonderful, thanks much

  • 12 people don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

  • YOUR FUCKING DEAD

  • My names Caleb Meyer...

  • Holy crap I think my ears just levelled up

  • Man is this song D A R K! I love it.

  • More intense than Death metal!

  • this song is amazing david rawlings is a motherfucking beast with his guitar man...and gillian welch have one of those voice who touch directly my heart just love it man.

  • Good, earthy sound. David Rawlings is a fricking machine with that guitar.

  • Best "BAND" ever! Period.

  • Goodness, that man can sure pick a guitar.

  • @wist0301

Gillian and David are mind-blowingly AMAZING. But there's enough room in the world for more than 2 great artists. I've seen the Civil Wars live, and they are amazing, too. I bet Gillian would agree. ;)

  • I used to like The Civil Wars before I realized they were just rip offs of these two.

  • Is there any tab out there for this? I can't find any tab from Rawlings...... Someone help please!

  • @chestermcduffy He improvises

  • the beautiful melodic sounds of folky country, yet with the lyrics of pure passionate rage. metal has nothing on this woman.

  • I love my dad for introducing this to me.

When I was a kid in the late 70s he used to play David Bromberg, Neil Young, Jesse Winchester, Emmylou, Linda Ronstadt... then in my early 30s, he dropped Gillian and David on me like it was nothing. It was like discovering music for the first time all over again.

  • My mother used to tell me that I would come to love country music, just like her. We were alike in almost every other way, as most said: beautiful, introverted, and preferring a lonely walk in the woods to a crowd most nights of the week. I disagreed at the time, but these days... well, at 23, my mother seems to have earned some posthumous points. Well played. Still don't care much for pop-country, though.

  • @Sappheyes I have always loved bluegrass/folk/appalachian type music, and a little old fashioned jim reeves, conway twitty, george jones type country, but I have never ever liked what is commonly known as 'country' today. This sort of thing is head and shoulders above the faith hills and tim mcgraw's and carrie underwoods and *gasp* taylor swifts, in my humble opinion. ;]

  • @ShawDAMAN

Taylor Swift and co. do not occupy the same universe as these two.

  • @Huckxxx AAAH. So THAT'S it!

    Agreed.

  • saw them open for buffalo springfield yesterday. He was ripping and so wass buffalo, needless to say

  • Great song. The story is similar to Rihanna's song " Man Down". Only nobody tripped off of this story being told.

  • This is my idea of what music should be. And what musicians should look like. Brilliant.

  • Gillian Welch is the most perfect woman ever put on this planet..... I'd hate Dave for having her, if he wasn't such a badass himself......

  • Holy. Shit.

  • 0:41 ...

  • How do you make an extraordinary song better? Just and brilliant singing and out of this world guitar picking!

  • damn, there good......

  • this is one if the most spectacular recordings, he plays that guitar like a machine gun.

  • I'd marry Gillian in a heartbeat.

  • You can hear American in haunting melodies, Gillian and David create harmony in truth through music.

  • @ecurbdnyl Do you know what that box David always sets behind him is? Looks like a little amp, but I suspect it's something else. An ambiance box, I guess :)

  • @gatordeano That box holds David's harmonica.

  • This what happens when stars collide, BEAUTIFUL.

  • Straight laser beamin' on that dirty little archtop.

    That's a 1935 Epiphone Olympic

  • holy crap

  • I've watched all of the YT vidoes posted from this concert - incredible - please tell me it's on DVD?

  • @booboobanjo i've seen it on file sharing networks...

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • Magnificent musically and emotionally.

  • You do know that Rawlings boy sold his soul to be able to play like that... damn he's on fire.

  • @climbnprana not a half bad singer either. ;]

  • @climbnprana I agree he's on fire! They are great. But I'm thinking he had to have a soul to sing that song...don't you? :)

  • @climbnprana or maybe i dunno just practiced a lot? i could be wrong *shrugs*

  • @climbnprana, Dave is a better guitar player than Jimi Hendrix, for sure!

  • simply SICK!

  • The only thing that worries me about this concert is how long it's going to take for Brits to start co-opting our Appalachain Roots music...they did it to the blues with lame results and little royalties...

  • @swham1 oh please...what do you think the roots of Appalachian music are?? Plenty of English, Scottish & Irish tunes and songs in there.

  • @Summerlandtopcat....fair enough...but that's like saying British slavery is responsible for the blues...

  • 37,000 views are from me

  • I'm speechless and I have a lump in my throat and a tear running down my face.

    Absolutely beautiful.

  • brilliant

  • I don't think I took a single breath for 3 minutes.

  • DIRTY!

  • Play it David.

  • These two are amazing; together they give her lyrics the dark energy they imply.

  • best song about attempted rape and homicide ever.

  • @fenwayfan37 what the fuck? get off the planet, please.

  • is awsomnes a way of bending awsome?

  • "I cried out my god i am your child, send your angels down. Then feeling with my finger tips, the bottle neck i found....." thats how you write a song....

  • Unfuckingbelievable.

  • Fantastic no one better in bluegrass than Gillian!!

  • Fantastic, no one better than Gillian!!!

  • Yeah Rawlings is the best guitarist in the world!!!

  • Mind is blown.

  • rawlings is a fucking boss

  • Pure fire indeed brother, pure fire.

  • Love them both-Pure art-outstanding!!!!!!!

  • Hell Amongst the Yearlings is what I lean on when times are tough....makes life worth living..

  • @klevrgirl absolutely.

  • Great article on David Rawlings in this quarter's issue of The Fretboard Journal...check it!

  • I don't really know if this can be called country, but for the sake of reference I'm going to say this is country. I normally hate country musicians, I think as professionals they lack skill and effort. But this is simply amazing. I'm blown away by David Rawlings. Truly amazing... I've been thinking about getting a new instrument soon. Another guitar was not on the list, until now. Excuse me while I listen to this performance a 40th time.

  • @Dracanic

    Must be called Folk music.

  • @Dracanic

"i guess all music is folk music. Hain't never heard no hoss singin' none." - Big Bill Broonzy.

  • BAD ASS!

  • @Biocentrick420 I know where you can download the movie although you may have to join their forum. Well worth it tho.

  • Gotta love a song about a girl turning the tables on a rapist and slashing his throat.

  • I drew that glass across his neck as fine as any blade

  • I was listening to John denvers rocky mountain high ( one of my favorite songs )

and one if the comments sugested this guy and they were right they are good

  • the kids of today need to be exposed to this music, so they will know what "real music" sounds like....these two musicians are always a real treat to hear

  • @Mygrassisblue01 ugh my generation sucks at likeing music

  • they are in the zone! artistic perfection.

  • I want to be gillian welch and/or marry david rawlings

  • beautiful, a match made in heaven, acoustic art at it's highest level. wow.

  • Gives me chills!!!!

  • yum

  • she is a GREAT songwriter!!!!!!!

  • perfection

  • AHHH DAVID RAWLINGS...... christ hes good!

  • She asks God to send his angels, and she finds the bottleneck blade that kills the rapist...staggering theology...astonishing music...sometimes it is right and true and good to speak of objective beauty- rarely, almost never, but sometimes something so beautiful simply demands praise, even adoration: this piece may very well be one of those times.

  • dang. that was a helluva performance. i want that geetar too, what is he playing??

  • @gisli01 He plays a 1935 Epiphone Olympic archtop.

  • If you ever get a chance to see them Live DO IT!!!!!

  • brilliant song

  • gets better every time i hear it.....that man can really wail it out on the git

  • Voices and guitars. This is pretty amazing music.

  • 1:15 has made me a cOOler person

    Hardly Strictly BGF.

  • Awesome Twosome!

  • I'm speechless. A. May. Zing.

  • That's gone straight on the favourite list! Bravo!!! Encore!!! Wonderful!!!!

  • These two must have lived in another life together, they're

so good. Is it the minor chords in this song that get me?

    I love it so much.

  • incredible

  • i watch this video at least every couple weeks

  • @andrewsund I know where you can download the whole show in high dvx

  • Very, extremely, amazing both of them together...

  • his guitar is so sick

  • I always check at Barnes & Noble for Gillian, but never find new CDs. I have all the old ones. They're the best.

And she's funny too. I talked to her once at a festival. They got it way over what's her name.

  • her and David have a new CD out under the name David Rawlings Machine. The guys from OCMS play on it too.

  • was this gig released on cd?

  • anybody know the kind of guitar David is playing? thanks.

  • @lighttreerulercat

    It's a 1935 Epiphone Olympic archtop guitar.

  • @david233b

    It's actually a Penacles 1957 steel guitar

  • @dowling1981

That is not a steel guitar. It is the guitar David always plays and it is a 1935 Epiphone. There is no such thing as a Penacles 1957 steel guitar. Please explain??

  • David - I do acknowledge that it resembles an Epiphone but it is a Penacles 1957. He also used this guitar when playing

  • Comment removed

  • dowling...: look it up on the epiphone models site. There is a picture of the 1934 epiphone beverly. The olympic is identical, except for the width.

  • dowling...: actually the guitar looks more like the beverly model at the head stock than the pictures of the 35 olympic i Have seen, which have scrip writing. They also have ivoroid bindings, which this guitar lacks. But I have only seen one 35 olympic, so there may be different sub - models.

  • TEB, you are forgetting the local distribution of the Penacles 1957, where it has been commonplace for it to be confused with other guitars. That is the case in this instance. Have you played one?

  • dowling1981: david is right. Go the David Rawlings bio and it is listed as the epiphone.

  • Yes its a 1935 Epiphone Olympic, see the march issue of Acoustic Guitar for an interview and a large sidebar on this guitar

  • i'm catching up to this dude's chops
