I didn't care too much for the story, and I thought that the actors cast were too young, including Brandon. The movie had some awesome scenes, but overall I found it lacking.
Somehow DC seems to be a master at botching what is in theory a very good franchise on the big screen. Green Lantern was another disappointment.
I'm a fan so I wished DC made great movies, but I get disappointed again and again, unlike Marvel, they do a decent job. Only the last two Batmans were good.

I agree i actually liked Brandon Routh and I do believe that Superman Returns was a highly underrated film, as many Superman fans what they thought about it and they almost all say notsalgic, it took them back to when they saw the original...i hope the new reboot to the series will be good but its going to be odd since John Williams Orchestral score became Superman's theme for everything more or less, and that will change since they have to cut all ties to the original, that sucks

Smallville is in its 9th season. I never watched a single episode until this past Nov., because I believed it to be garbage aimed at teens. At the same time I thought Routh's Superman was great. After stumbling upon 1 scene of Smallville on You tube I bought the 1st season. It was OUTSTANDING! By Jan I had managed to catch up on the entire series. The show has the quality of feature films and is the best Superman storyline ever. Im glad I finally caved and watched!

I'm with some of you guys that were disappointed in Superman Returns. However guys, don't you think it stunk more so because of the political correctness overtones and the script, than Routhe himself? Routhe could only do what the director told him to do. We need a Superman movie that is more in line with what we saw with Chris Reeve movies and the Justice League cartoons. Producers need to leave out the politics and dumbing-down-of-the-male antics out!

Tom Welling is this generations face to SUPERMAN! SR sucked because Tom wasn't in it! The WB needs to re-boot the movie series, and end SMALLVILLE, and make the movie be the first time we see Tom as SUPERMAN.
I would start it 5 years after the last episode of the show, and have it pick up with Clark finally putting on the suit at the age of 30.
Also the start could show us the kryptonian origin while skipping the Smallville part.

@Graham2271 As much as I like Chris he would have said the same thing about Dean, Gerard,John. And at that time smallville was the only live action verison on at the time. Now if we were to be really honest The Wb cartoons are the best thing about Superman in the media. Superman Return made more money then Batman Begins. It was fans that cried that the movie not good. When in fact everybody love it when it first came out.

You are right. But not only is Tom Wellings Clark the best version yet, even better than the hollow version in the comics, but the cast he shares Smallville with has been spectacular! Rosenbaums Luthor puts a depth into the character never even hinted at! And who would think that Oliver Queen, of all DC characters would be so great? Theyve done a great job with the Superman mythology!

I thought he did great as Superman. It's not his fault the movie sucked. I liked the belt change, but hated how they took the s off the cape. Keep him as Superman and Spacey as Luthor and get rid of the rest of the cast and crew.

Oh my God, I know right! I mean so many people peg Brandon as the reason for the movie being so bland, it was the bloody writing, I mean he's not exactly the most amazing actor in the world but he did fine, the fucking story was a tad weak (but they needed something for Lex to do) so they should have diluted Lex's scheme with more action, reducing Louis' role a bit, and completely deleting his son, wtf is that, i cannot believe they wrote in a son for Superman, stupid as shit.

Brandon Routh sucked the most horrible superman there ever was. Dean Cain was better and so was George Reeves. The best being Christopher Reeve. I think Tom Willing is the next logical choice. Fuck Brandon Routh. He should never do another superman movie!! I'm with APrice... Brandon Routh would be better as the Green Lantern.

I'm with some of you guys that were disappointed in Superman Returns. However guys, don't you think it stunk more so because of the political correctness overtones and the script, than Routhe himself? Routhe could only do what the director told him to do. We need a Superman movie that is more in line with what we saw with Chris Reeve movies and the Justice League cartoons. Producers need to leave out the politics and dumbing-down-of-the-male antics out!

Routhe is a excellent actor and did well in superman.. Some people were excpecting more of a comicbook movie with "superman Returns" and thats not what they got. Both tom and brandon can play the roll i think tom physically has more the body though.

Yeah, i agree. Have you seen Tom Welling fron Smallville? Now THERE'S a guy who's perfect for the role of Superman! He is the spitting image of Reeve (Christopher Reeve) he has the smile of Superman, the body of Superman, the VOICE of Superman and the entire look!! Routh would make a good Robin as in Batman and Robin? LOL!! That would be funny! But, Routh is not Superman. Check out Tom Welling and you'll see what I'm talking about.

That has nothing to do with it. I have looked at Tom many times and he does not look like Christopher. In all honesty, whether you like it or not Brandon looks more like Christopher. You and a few others need to get your nose out of Tom Welling's but and realize he DOES NOT resemble Christopher at all. Open your damn eyes, Brandon looks a lot more like Chris than Tom does.

i honestly believe that brandon routh is a great superman,he did his best with the script that was handed to him. i personally like the movie,but the only problem there was is the theme,they kept playing that over and over,i can understand why they did that,after all it is SUPERMAN.

Tom Welling is this generations face to SUPERMAN! SR sucked because Tom wasn't in it! The WB needs to re-boot the movie series, and end SMALLVILLE, and make the movie be the first time we see Tom as SUPERMAN.
I would start it 5 years after the last episode of the show, and have it pick up with Clark finally putting on the suit at the age of 30.
Also the start could show us the kryptonian origin while skipping the Smallville part.
Since we already seen him grow into SUPERMAN.

It wasn't Routh's fault. The writer's figured it would be more 'edgy' to write Superman to be a emo, angsty, peeping tom asshole. Superman is none of that. He's a confident ADULT, not what he was in Superman Returns. He is supposed to be an overgrown boyscout. He is supposed to be a little nerdy. That's why we love the character, because he ISN'T BATMAN. Misguided Reeves fans blame Routh. Put the blame where it belongs: The idiot writers, the moronic producers, and that asshole Bryan Singer.

Disagree with you askgk. I am big fan of Smallville but I think Brandon is the perfect replacement for Reeves. The man is dead not the franchise. As far as Welling, the studio plan on having a SMALLVILLE spinoff called Metroplolis in which at this point Welling will be wearing the Superman custume, well that is the rumor anyway and did not conflict with the movie and the spinoff.
