My only critique is that the audio in the video was kinda low and there was talking over most of it, so it was really hard to hear the differences, especially considering they're subtle differences. Other than that, thanks for this. Mid/side EQ was always something I knew existed but never really understood how it was used.
A great tutorial, thanks! I learned a lot here. Only thing i wanted was to hear more of the comparison, i can't hear much of a difference. I'll try it out on some of my own stuff tho.
You are a fantastic teacher bro - clear with gr8 knowledge. Step by step visuals are top quality. Rare mix on youtube. Good to get yr take on effective kick driven side-chaining in OZne 5 - subtle enough to correct timings in dance tracks for vynl.
@Brianlee315 Then why watch a tutorial on mastering? I know what you're saying and i agree, i'd rather leave mastering on my tunes to a qualified engineer for many reasons. But this is a tutorial on mastering, why call it bullshit?
@YouNolf With a lot of the subtle differences youll only be able to hear it when you're playing it loud on headphones and when youre actually in the DAW. Im sure you heard the difference when he clicked the master bypass right?
@rhymegarden Go back and re-install it, then make sure you've installed the 32 bit VST and the 64 bit VST, then drop both off in your VST folder, or do it one at a time and figure out which one suits your program the best, and then you'll be good to go. Now I had close to the same problem in Ableton, so I don't know how it works in your software, and I installed Ozone 5. So if all else fails you could e-mail Izotope and ask them how to do it.
I tried to install Izotope Ozone 4 and I had to do a setup, and for some reason I can't seem to find it in Audition 3. All that comes up is just Waves, not the actual program that's supposed to pop out in a new window within Audition. Do you know what's wrong?? I've tried everything I can think of.
@quistuhpha Pretty much what he said! I had no idea about this trick and Iv'e been doing music and audio related stuff for a long time, over 15 years.
stupid question but isnt it possible to master using just ableton. some problems starting isotop on my mac i looked at the mastering section in ableton and it makes it sound better louder and reduce the dynamique. my sound wave looks like a mastered track im not sur about the sound :).another question: im taking sound engineering bachelor in norway and its more about studios, mics, recording and concert situation,im interested in electronic music does the students online get the same support ???
Hi Daniel. Thanks for the awesome tutorial. I must admit I can barely hear the difference between processed and non-processed sound, but definitely there is the difference. It's very subtle and it's something you can rather feel than hear.
I think your videos are informative, but you keep talking over the parts where you're bypassing and enabling your changes. It makes it nearly impossible to hear what you've done...
I listened with headphones and didn't hear any difference when you clicked bypass with the m/s stuff. but heard a difference in the ozone bypass at the end. maybe its the way it was recorded, but the changes in stereo imaging weren't audible for me. and im an engineer i swear :D I got a diploma to prove it :D
@xXScharnierklaengeXx They are composing their melody by themselvs. Not sampling or looping. Get daw that has nice piano roll and automation , and synth that generate nice noise. Then compose in it and automate the synth parameters. You'll get huge variations of sound. You can do all of them in your computer. The rest is up to you.
I think these tutorials are all excellent, but many of the tutorials use very uninteresting, somewhat empty-feeling musical tracks. I wish we could see this active on more engaging music, and see a larger difference.
can i do the same steps to every kind of music i produce on ableton for example minimal electro or minimal techno do i have to do the same steps for every track i produce or is it just a sample on the tracks u mixed and i i have to guide myself thru my ears im really bad at hearing or recognizing sounds but i love music big problem. if i have to do the same steps and numbers for every track then im good if i have to do it different on different tracks then im so lost any advice
but i wonder about how i know what to boost on different song with this technique. should i try to use your tutorial as a basic and then mod it for my own use. or can the frequencies differ ALOT?
This man is a genius.. would be nice to find a chart of which keynotes fit with which frequency's/hz as he mentioned when filling out the Bass/Mids. Keep up the fantastic work!
It's really nice to see this kind of information presented in this way. I can read about how the tools work all day, but having someone show how they'd ever actually use it is highly educational. I did find it a bit hard to hear the differences when the effect was bypassed though - largely because the voiceover continued right through it!
There is a fault at 8:35: if you do mid/side processing to a mono signal, the result will be mono regardless of the setting. In this case the side signal is just silence. Eq'ing silence results in silence. There is only a mid signal. Converting the mid signal to a stereo signal will result in identical left and right channels, means its mono. If you want to make a mono signal stereo with eqing, you need to apply a different eq setting to the left and right But that is not M/S processing.
Great info, but like music, videos/movies need some mixing/mastering techniques applied to them as well. In this case, a touch of de-esser on the voice would have made my ears much happier, especially after I put on my headphones as recommended by the video. The sibilance in his voice overpowered the subtlety of the mixing techniques and made it difficult for me to hear the results of the demonstrations. Great info though, looking forward to giving these techniques a try.
At the beginning when talking about M&S technique you picture is of a coincident pair of cardioid microphones. For any one hoping to use this technique they would of course need a figure of eight and a cardioid/omni microphone.
Also it might be nice to allow people to hear the processing you talk of you cut the bass on the side channel and boost the high but only play a section with mid frequency in it.
@Brandon75689 thanks! Daniel Wyatt teaches our Mixing and Mastering course at our school in NYC and in our forthcoming Mixing and Mastering online course, there's more where that came from!
Daniel, thank you so much for sharing. Your session in Austin was super informative and this was one of the best parts. I'm glad you made a video so more people can learn about it. Get Izotope 4 if you don't have it.
does make sense only if your mix is perfectly balanced. there is no rules in which you add certain frequencies to any track so it'll sound better. it is individual isn't it?
Im just amazed! Thanks for a small insight into this software and the Mastering process. i want to know more. I never knew adding EG is adding more harmonic notes
Since you like typing and you love 8kHz, you can just type '8k' in the edit box. Ozone will put the EQ node at 8kHz.
Another awesome thing I love about Ozone is the alt-solo on the EQ. Hold alt and click on the frequency display and Ozone solos that frequency range so you can hear trouble spots easier.
Thanks for including this track and such a great tip. Will try this today. I love Ozone 4 ...I use Pultec eq and UA Percision Limiter...So I will try this technique between them...
can anyone tell me if ozone5 allows a side chaining input? i can't find the info anywhere

hi i am stefan from the netherlands. i also use ozone 4 for just a couple of months now,
and have a few questions:
why do u bypass all the freq you just adjusted?
how do i know how to roll off some lows or mids or side freq's, since there are a lot of parameters?
why and when do i have to narrow some freq's? how do i know?
and also how do i know what value i add on those parameters???
this is a whole new way to eq and master for me....

Sorry to be a pedant.
@ 7:40 there is a loose edit .
