  • Too bad TED talks pulls the viewers in the direction of the talk. The participants are also pulled 1000 ways each year

  • Hahahaha. Political view to do it in the US? Don't they use up 60% of the world's energy?

  • there are so many acitivsts trying to galvanize people but at the climate change summit nothing happens.

when one says "you have to go green!" the people just dont care or say they have too little money to do that. im just a student but im buying eco-cloth, get clean power and i always take the subway. i think everyone is capable of doing that.

  • doesn't brazil use sugar cane which grows very very easy down south? they have a growing season all year round so they have a competitive advantage in making ethanol??

  • Mary is the daughter of John Doerr, a partner in the venture capital firm that Gore joined last November, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

Mary doerr is the founder of inconvieniant youth..it is funded by al gore....

Al joins doerrs firm..doerrs daughter runs inconvieniant you...

Coincidence much?..getting kids to pedal als propoganda..

  • UNPLUG YOUR CELL PHONE CHARGER WHEN NOT USING IT.

  • I think Peak Oil might help us go green.

  • This was great. Thank you for posting it :]

  • I boggles my mind how many of you are making smart assed comments from your anonymous cheap seats. Are you really doing more than John Doerr ? Or does it just make you feel superior to criticize people

  • WALMART ONLY MAKES CHANGES THAT WILL MAKE THEM PROFIT 'SO PAINTING A FUCKIN ROOF WHITE AND ADDING SKYLIGHTS SAVES walmart money, HOW MUCH DAMMAGING SHIT FROM WALMART ENDS UP IN EITHER OUR BODIES OR LANDFILLS

  • ILLUMINATI

  • CF bulbs full of mercury made in China. I thought you might have real solutions with this video, but it is an advertisement for BMW (big corporation) and Walmart (big corporation) with a desire to drain the taxpayers dry. No talk of cleaning up the water, no talk of using methane gas for fuel, no talk of getting Monsanto to stop polluting with their toxic chemicals. Sorry this is a big FAIL.

  • You might find this interview with the GEMM CEO interesting if you're interested in knowing more about John Doerr's history.

Google Roger Raffee + John Doerr

  • I don't give a rat's ass whether "anthropogenic global warming" is an actual problem or just a new vertical market for the Kleiners and GEs of the world: Doerr's verbal, nonverbal and sales skills put Don Draper to shame. He's Marlon Brando. Bravo.

  • This guy thinks he has a right to control other people's lives. It's sad.

  • Maybe all these damn planes flying over my house stealing my electricity as they do sooooo Stop flying i think that would help .Does anyone know how many planes we have in the sky....SAY Green House Gases .Not to metion they are releasing there fuel into the sky as well :(

  • the appropriate response to global warming is to get on an air plane and fly all over the world... wow you did take one out of gore's book.

  • It's not personal action that is going to fix it. Yes, it would help a lot of everyone cut their energy usage, but broader political regulation is needed. Hence all of the cap and trade efforts. Gore knows that. His movie was more about personal initiative, but now he has moved toward the realm of political movement, which is far more important. So it's not about a handful of people voluntarily being more efficient. It's about getting the whole world to be greener.

  • Damn hippies..

  • I know it's difficult, but could you try to write something intelligent? C'mon, try, I know you can do it.

  • geothermal and better battery technology, plus alot of hard work, and we'll have that solved, but too little too late.

  • Nothing will ever go as planned..We are just making climate change take effect faster..It's going to happen anyway just not as fast were just speeding it up by 1000x through all of this bull shit the government and the new world order really don't care it's all money to them and sooner or later were going to have to stand up to them and get them out of there place if you think we could esily over come this we made them who they are well take it away..Well have to realize sooner or later..

  • Climate change? Some say that is a political scam, I don't know, I'm no expert. In the 70's is was prophesied that we were in the verge of a new ice age. Please, male up your minds!

I'd worry more about the political conditions of the world: AMerica angaged in a senseless war in the middle east. in the volatile middle east. Nuclear weapons are the real problem today.

  • It is good to acknowledge the other big problems our world has besides the energy / environment problem. But they are all linked to some extent. Models project that an additional 400,000 Africans will die from civil war brought on by climate change by 2030. This will be due to different peoples fighting over the diminished resources as a result of famine and drought. Hunger can be slowed by addressing climate change. As can the economy - employing smarter technology will produce many jobs.

  • I agree with you on that.

  • Thanks. :)

  • very passionate speaker

  • I like his passion, but he doesn't see the whole picture. Brazilian Ethanol creates even more CO2 due to deforestation. At least for the next couple of years. Not even mentioning the biodiversity loss and forest degradation.

The solutions for this problems are near, and we need to invest more into research and green tech. I think that will be even economic and pay of really soon.

But we shouldn't make things worse in the intention of making the better. We need to think before we act.

  • @cdohm: FYI...

Brazilian ethanol is made from sugar cane. For sugar cane to grow it takes in CO2 from the atmosphere, like all plants. Brazilian ethanol production in 2008 was ca. 500 million tons (circa 30% of world's production). To produce that, the needed area is ca 0.5% of Brazil's total area (8.5 million km²)

Check Wikipedia statistics on sugar cane and ethanol.

  • the man cried, problem solved lol

  • Only the first hydrogen powered car invent by Filipino from south east asia, from philippines were the inventors have a contract from a big name company of automotive, and to help save the world from global warming. if those car use hydrogen as gasoline many lives, our entire nature, and financial problem were solve. " Just watch the last part of this video 18:38 "

  • Meh...

  • We did not do act that way in the past because it was not a problem, so it was not even a topic. Knowledge is power, until you know. Then you must act.

  • seven years for 20%? whats the big deal... thats nothing to be proud of.. they should have had white roofs from the very beginning. why would you not make your things efficient in the first place. no wonder we destroy our environment if thats the kind of psychology behind it. wake up people.

  • Great vid.

  • How about all the clear-cutting to plant all that extra ethanol?!?

    Horse-shit....

Anyone ever think about the GREENEST fuel of all? WALKING!!!

Live close to your work, and if you can't then carpool... if you can't carpool, here's a little secret... how about... WORKING FROM HOME!?!?

A majority of jobs these days in NA can be done from home using nothing more than the computer you're watching this video from.

Ever think that those in power don't really want the "GREENEST" alternative 4 us?

  • lol @ crying. wtf?

  • The world has too many people with unsustainable lifestyles for the earth to carry.

We increasingly need more animals and plants in their natural habitat than humans on the earth.

  • that ethanol stuff is just bs. if you had a problem with gas prices being up to $4 a gallon you already are paying out your ass to pay for the ethanol bs. ethanol is not an effective way to fill up your gas tank.

  • oh yeah i forgot. the africans could grow and ship corn to the us for ethanol for far cheaper then us famers could produce. so of course the us gov. puts a tarrif on that african shit. you wont find any (good) answers from the gov. you must do all you can do for a better environment, and convince your friends and family to do the same. doing things the grassroots way, is the american way. GL ALL!!!

  • Thanks John Doe.

    Wal-Mart brings 100 billion BS lead/toxic

stuff from China/Asia. They are BS.

They must ACT nice before people SEE their

  • Propaganda! Designed to burden the population with heavy regulation, carbon taxes, and reduce our standard of living while the banking elite live how they want. Climate changes on earth all of the time. The ice age ended without any human influence. Was that not a change in climate? Real environmental issues are pollution by big corporations, governments, and military. GMO food and genetic modification is screwing up our environment. CO2 is a natural gas, it's not evil. This is junk science.

  • Why do so many who watch this get indignant and defensive? Doerr's argument is reasonable, and fairly moderate: "Let's be more efficient, make more jobs, and make lots of money." Is his idea really so a unpalatable? Listen to yourselves -- at best, you're making desperate excuses for laziness and extravagance. Does it really pain you so much to change a light bulb? Even if global warming is not a "real problem," can't you at least agree, on principle, that resourcefulness is a good thing?

  • First: Nature is probably polluting as much if not more than humans through volcanoes and huge forest fires. Second: even if humans pollute more than Nature, they are not the primary cause: just look at the sun activity charts. Look at Mars's ice caps and other planets in the solar system. Oh, but I know: green little men emitting CO2 !

  • Wow!, I wonder in what kind of place you live, have you gone to large cities or had a glance at disappearing forests?, and what about the vanishing species?. Wake up!

  • extinction of species is surely man made through over-hunting, destruction of habitats or pesticides (decreasing also men's fertility by 50% in 50 years) but what I am talking about is the primary cause of global warming which is caused by sun activity rise. Besides, it's not CO2 that should be taxed (vital to plants hence to humans) but very toxic gases or particles like dioxins, lead or soot directly affecting human's health.

  • Okay, then SAY IT...in the way you are writing you appear to be in the side of people who want to "prove" that nothing is man made and we are just doing fine....Thats what you seem to be saying anyway.....Gobal warming certainly can be grossly affected by the presence of nanodroplets of aerosols and other stuff that should not be there....I can quote papers, but the important thing is do not stand -please- in the way of those who point that there is something wrong with governments. Kyotosastart

  • Hmm so you're saying that when humans weren't around, plants didn't grow as fast because there wasn't enough CO2 for them to feed on? Right, good one.

Sun activity rise is, like most other things in Nature, cyclical. Humans are disrupting those cycles, period. Main cause? GHG.

You also talk about forest fires and you're right about those. However, what is the main cause of forest fires? Nature or man/wood companies/agricultural "needs"?

  • Research has shown that CO2 is not the main cause of climate change, but a consequence of what happend further in the past (Please watch "The great global warming swindle"). Sun's activity rise is a far bigger contributor. Proof of it is the melting of Mars' ice caps. Besides, I repeat : extremely toxic substances released into air or water like dioxins, lead, mercury or arsenic are not taxed whereas CO2 (vital to plants) is. This is just one the biggest scams in history.

  • Oh...boo hoo hoo.

First of all, we're doing FAR greater REAL harm to the planet by destroying life in the oceans (overfishing and pollution) than we are by changing the climate (which has been a REGULAR FEATURE of life on earth).

Second. It almost positively IS too late--so why indulge in fits of weeping self-flagellation? We have induced a climate-change tipping point, that is more often induced by other means. Big deal...

    more

  • There will be lots of extinctions (another regular feature of life on earth), there will be lots of human deaths (eventually), which is something that is INEVITABLE--our population is beyond stability, anyhow. And the demographic reality of the planet will change drastically.

In the WIDEST perspective, this is all just the simplest of ecology lessons.

How will we use the lesson? Can we give up stupidity? Can we give up destructiveness, consumerism, religion...and live on a rational basis?

  • I don't know for sure, but seems like Brazil would get its oil from Venezuela.

    Of course, oil is fungible.

  • let's fucking DO THIS and make some cash!!!

I think it'S a matter of changing incentives--laws, etc. if we keep the same incentives, the same consumption patterns will arise and nothing will encourage good management and innovation. so it's really a matter of laws I think. it's painful to think that some products and services have to go (goods shiped from too far, or regular light bulbs), but that's the only way to encourage innovations and new products/services-if there's cash to make off it.

  • I'd like to remind people of the geometric point that volume shrinks exponentially faster than surface area, so the more shrinkage of icebergs, the faster they'll go. This acceleration is independent of any increasing temperatures, which just make it faster...

  • I want John Doerr to became the president of United States of America.

    -Mike

  • every year since the early 70's that I could remember in Canada, we were able to skate on open water in winter, not in the last three years, my kids blame my generation also

  • This excellent video drove me to embrace the power of YouTube like never before. I haven't been the same since and I ALREADY WAS an environmentalist!

  • Plants take in CO2 - they want all the CO2 they can get, which is why there is onyl 0.00037% CO2 in the air: Whic hgoes up in an ice age!

  • Plants take in CO2 to support life on Earth! It is so green, and you so thick!

  • You realize that humans emit 7 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year? Plants cannot absorb even a very small fraction of that. Plants created the oil in the first place. It took 300 million years to create our reserves. We have burnt them in 200 years.

Research the greenhouse effect. Without it our planet would be a LOT colder. We couldn't survive here. Venus on the other hand has a lot more co2 in it's atmosphere and that planet is so warm we couldn't survive there. Do your research first.

  • Through history, CO2 follows the climate; it does not make the weather: That is a lie from nuclear power, who thought up Global Warming to give CO2, the gas of life, a bad name.

  • so what are you suggesting? keep pollution going?

  • As Prof argent told me 'one body's pollution is another's food!'. Plants excrete O2, and take in CO2 - the gas of life. Which gas is the pollutor here - looks like O2 to me!

  • Waste equals food! Yay, someone finally talking some sense. We don't need to produce LESS CO2, we need to CONSUME MORE>

  • oh yeah, of course, I totally agree with you! but only if people like you are responsible and PAY for cleaning all the pollution generated.

  • this is not a responsible way of talking about climate change, and certainly not one that encourages positive action. you should learn a thing or two about communication before going on TED with a speech and giving a presentation that will be viewed by tens of thousands

  • That's the only way people understand the importance of their involvment. When you are too optimistic people say:'' No worries, they will fix it'' This time everyone needs to reconsider every single action...

  • You said, it we can only do so much. I work for an engineering firm, what we do is we create sustainable designs. Currently, there is a paradigm shift occuring with A&E professionals. Mass collaboration has finally made it mainstream, with this we are now attempting to design a sustainable city for about half a million people. I would say that within 12 to 24 months you will start to see a shift within the people of america.

  • My respect for KPCB's initiatives, though driven partly for profit, just increased.

  • That man was far too emotional. If people keep basing their judgements on emotion rather than hard facts, we'll never get anything done.

  • agreed, I did feel emotion in it, and i thaught it was heartfelt at the end to the degree of the guy wanting to see his daughter in many years to come. However, in this scenario its highly likely that it was a case of, "yeah, that guys crying, lets *jump on the bandwagon*"... at the end of the day, i see this as a guy whos moved by climate change... but if he wants others to as well, put some hard facts into things. I myself live life normally, BUT, recycle (if theres the opportunity to do so)

  • 5 stars! This guy is so right he is not blind to anything and has great description when telling a story, Can you beleive he was in a video on the web where he drank beer and rubbed a kitten all over is naked body. True American great speech I feel you brother.

  • oh dear, 11:00

$15,000,000 spent on research to reduce drugs costing $2 down to $0.20 saving 1,000,000 lives which would've only cost $2,000,000 to do so.

  • You gotta remember, that's per year. In eight years it'll be worth it.

  • And there will be 8mio more mouths to feed in Africa. Yeh, brilliant. Lets make more civil war in Africa, and then we can go in and steal their natural resources.

Just no limit to the depth of evil of white people.

  • Hooray for us white devils!

  • so it is not just in the inner cities in america where blacks can't take care of thier own families? heh.... and here i was thinking that was just a stereotype.

  • People who live in the agricultural age are accustomed to death. That's why they have so many children, to beat the odds. If you give industrial/technological age medicine or food production techniques to people living in the agricultural age, they will continue to overpopulate until the food runs out, then they go to war. Europeans also did this until the age of literacy, universal suffrage and TV.

Inner city blacks also live in the agricultural age because they are denied a proper education.

  • you cannot be serious. are you a devil? i hope not.

  • Scientists can't even get the weatehr right tomorrow! And now they want to cost you 10s of billions!

  • JohThm,

For an unbiased and pragmatic discussion of global climate change, please watch "How it all Ends" by wonderingmind42. That video will address your concerns about the predictive power of science and the economic costs of action on global climate change.

  • It amazes me how many people, whose only scientific knowledge (so to speak) comes from YouTube, Google, or mainstream news media (or even worst, religion), dear, not just to argue and minimize the value of scientific evidence, but to feel comfortable with their ignorance and try to spread it to the rest of us. You people are a virus, and the reason why the world sucks.

  • thank you. bless your heart.

  • I've done a lot of this before I'd even seen this, florescent bulbs, fans instead of air conditioning, riding my bike when I can and only using the vehicle when I need to travel large distances for work, and I'm saving up for a hybrid. I agree with the speaker, even all of this isn't enough, this should have been done from the begining. How blind, the world before us. Perhaps now we can open our eyes.

  • I got some of the energy saving light bulbs. They work out almost as cheap as regular bulbs to install, but save money in energy costs. Also, they run cooler and don't overheat.

I can't wait to see the LED bulbs that are even more efficient made available.

We can make a difference, and save money doing it.

  • "They work out almost as cheap as regular bulbs to install,"

    Well that's totally untrue.

  • I live in Canada where we actually learn how to do math in grade school.

Take the number of ruining hours bulb life expectancy into consideration to see what your real bulb cost comparison is.

Also, shop around, as more people begin switching to price & energy competitive products, the prices will drop.

  • What r u talking about its "global contrast" that we have to worry about not warming, winters are getting colder and unexpected, while summer is getting longer and hotter, the world is not just getting hotter, during winter stray snow storms are getting worse and colder too

  • I think the best way to put it is:

'Everyone is entitled to there own opinions but not there own facts'

  • I understand it's better to save lives but the more people the more carbon!

  • Every little bit helps. If we all embraced 10 energy sparing methods the resources, costs and effects would be enormous. Unless Green makes money there is no way to bring it into global economy. We all tried doing it by choice - so far no difference. Saving the Earth has to make money otherwise it will never happen. Let's start by banning non-rechargeable batteries, collecting old technology and buying carbon credits at the gas station. There are real ways to make a difference.

  • Sorry for two posts but I wanted to add another little bit in. It's basically just a scam in my opinion to create some kind of "green industry", such as "green housing materials and the like" to profit off, another tax to invent like some form of "Green Tax" and an excuse for political condemnation on states such as China and India, another political tool. Don't buy the hype, people.

  • Watch the sand dosen't get up your nose.

  • I am more of a believer in "Climate Change". What is happening to the planet is natural. Even quite alot of scientists agree with this point but instead, "Global Warming" has become almost a "religion". You don't follow it, you get persecuted. But really, what is happening is natural to Earth. It was hotter in the Middle Ages than it is now, for example. I believe factories produce less C02 then the sun, they hardly cause an impact.

  • You don't think that 300 million (three hundred million) plus automobiles driving daily everyday for the last half century will not affect our atmosphere?

  • no they will not

  • "If you don't go, you don't know." Are American's in such denial? Sad that people are not even educated enough to see that it makes good economic sense much less a wise investment in the world's future. The messenger has become the target, not the issue nor the solutions that are raised. Shame on the Naysayers and Bible Thumpers that take the negative out of spite. Beware all ye who enter here, DEAD BLOG!

  • this is so stupid. Global warming is caused by the sun and nothing we do will fix it. It's a natural cycle of the earth. I am all for reducing pollution but don't try to 'scare' the public into thinking mankind is the cause. 1 volcanic eruption produces more CO2 than all of mankind produces in 1 year. There are hundreds of eruptions every year.

  • global warming is not natural, what your talking about;the cycle of tempratures does not go up this fast. global warming is a fact.

  • so how fast is the temp going up it was hotter in the thirties and temp has not incresed since 1998 that the facts

  • Temperature isn't the problem (yet). Heat is the problem. My analogy is this: Imagine a glass of water with ice cubes in it. Put it over a flame. Stick a thermometer in it. The flame adds heat, but the temperature stays about the same as the ice melts. Once the ice is gone, the temperature rises fast! This should illustrate why we need to get our butts moving while we still have ice. Once we run out, the temperature will rise so fast we won't have enough time to fix anything before we bake.

  • MemeVector2 You have no idea how much ice there is in the world, no way is all the ice going to be gone. And remember only 10,000 years ago the entire USA was covered in snow and ice

  • The estimate at the moment is that around 257 icecubes of 1x1x1 kilometer is melting of Greenland every year. And this number is rising.

  • theiamania

When numbers like you posted like "257 icecubes of 1x1x1 kilometer is melting of Greenland every year"

It can sound like a lot but let's be honest and also post the number of what you call "ice cubes" that there are in Greenland. Now with ALL THE INFORMATION a person can see that your 257 cubes is like a speck of sand on a beach. You should also remember that the planet does not have a stable temp it's always changing, you my friend are only living in a speck of time

  • Fredrik: Read. Study both sides. Understand. Then post.

Yes, I oppose the fear-mongering, too. But global warming IS man-made, real, and dangerous. No matter how deep you stick your head in the sand.

  • no its not its the sun

  • This is wildly incorrect. Volcanoes have a net cooling effect on climate. Sulfur dioxide becomes Sulfuric Acid Aerosol in the stratosphere which reflects the suns energy. Carbon from volcanoes is a negligible positive contributor to climate.

  • Try the blog 'real climate' some time if you want to disabuse yourself of these beliefs, the facts behind which have been repeatedly and extensively delt with by scientists.

  • It isnt that bad folks. Al Gore presented false information in his documentary. Kyoto is a treaty designed to punish industrialized nations and allows "3rd world" or developing nations like China get away with polluting at a rate equal to the output by the US yearly(and worse depending on the industry)The fact that this guy is calling for billions to stabilize a climate crisis that does not exist says it all. Try reading Matthew 24 in the New Testament on why the weather is so crazy

  • A lot of this global warming and climate talk is just baseless, and proven contrary by scientific analysis.

    Check out an eye-opener here:

Search for "The great global warming swindle" on google videos, or maybe even on YouTube

  • And what can we lose if we are wrong about the Global Warming?

And what can we lose if we are wrong about the opinion you have claimed to be true?

  • Start with a few million lives in underdeveloped countries: Their health, life expectancy, economic impoverishment and quality of life.

If that's not enough, add to the fact that we're spending billions of dollar on a scientific myth (and let's not compare this to the 'mystery' of quarks or leptons)

Add to the fact the misinformation being spread in schools, meetings, universities and wherever else.

If that's still not enough... I don't know if adding more will help.

  • arjmage: Search for the 10 000 refutations of it. Seriously, if you can't yourself at least see the many logical fallacies in it, you need to read up on logic.

  • Hey MidgardEagle: I think I'm fairly aware of the logic involved. It's usually the emotional ones that aren't clear thinking enough. I don't in any way deny that we need a lot ecological conservation in place... but that has nothing to do with global warming.

Sure, the precarious state of the ecological balance is very much a man made, if not man-abetted situation. But not global warming.

  • It's mad. We need a change of our wasteful lifestyles, not "better biofuels". Better biofuels will be useless to us when the Amazon has gone because of deforestation for biofuels.

People in Brazil are being kicked of their land because of the money that can now be made. The dumb solutions of technologists just won't work.

We need to cut the carbon while freezing deforestation and the destruction of our bio-capacity.

  • @nealeu Have you noticed the CO2 rise has occured on the same graph points as the rapid deforestation, the two are in tandem. No polititions seem interested in stopping deforestation though.

  • Everybody should just go zero carbon right now. Convert your house to passive solar by installing triple glazed oversize south facing windows, put pv and tube solar panels on your roof, put a vertical axis wind turbine on your roof, get a solar plug in hybrid. Get on the internet for a loan right now. Join the renewable revolution.

  • Just brilliant!!!

  • If Brazil's Ethanol program is the best we can hope for. Then thats a joke.

    greyfalcon. net/ brazil

They produce as much Oil as Venezuela.

Only a tiny fraction of their fuel comes from Ethanol.

And almost all of that is countered by their deforrestation.

Not because of the trees so much, but because of the exposed peat soil LEAKS carbon like crazy.

    greyfalcon. net/ soy

    greyfalcon. net/ palmoil

To the extent that Palm Oil in the Tropics causes 10x more CO2 than it prevents.

  • did no one get the hilarious joke at about 2:00. he was saying that he tried to solve the climate crisis and he started by visiting like 10 different countries to do it... lol i guarantee you he didn't walk there. hes probably put like 16tonnes of carbon in to the atmosphere with all those plane journeys.

  • Its the best presentation about green tech I ever heard.

  • It really wasn't that good. Have you seen the others at ted(dawt)com?

  • Very moving and touching. Mr. Doerr communicates the Global Warming problem well and brings the relevence home to the family and our next generations. I agree, it will take a lot more will on everybody's part in the world to slow down this catastrophe. And anybody who hasn't seen "An Inconvenient Truth" please do no matter your politics because the truth takes no sides.

  • It'll only happen when the Republicans stop spewing the nonsense about scientists being "biased". That's the pot calling the kettle black if I've ever heard it.

  • I think society is going to make it after all.. Although we still must see to sides of 'every' story, just to have balance! We must give astronomics a chance as well: I think the war on climate change is a great thing, but we must not forget we are tiny in this universe and the sun is a big factor in our solar system!!

  • The sun is a big factor, but also a relatively constant one. Our problem is the non-constant 30% increase in the insulating layer that we've added to our planet that keeps in the heat from that "big factor"

  • its parts per million no big deal
