In 1979 Gilles was racing at Brands Hatch in the Race of Champions. I was 12 years-old and managed to sneak into the Paddock and wriggle under the Ferrari truck and found Gilles - 'chilling' - sitting on a Michelin rear tyre eating a bowl of Pasta - I found the courage to ask him for his autograph - he gave me the bowl to hold - asked me my name - signed it 'To Simon - Always be 100% - Your Friend, Gilles Villeneuve'...I said thanks and 'I hope you Win tomorrow'...he said 'Me Too!' Gilles was a very hard racer, but the comment that most impressed me on Gilles came from Keke Rosberg, saying: Gilles was the hardest bastard I ever raced against, hard but absolutely fair. If you beat him into a corner, he would never close the door or come down on you, Gilles was a giant of a driver. I agree 100%, he never did any Schumacher dirty tricks, Gilles is legend, Schumacher never.

Thank you for this tribute. The accident that killed Gilles I will never forget, so I do not have and do not want to see it again.

Still after all these years it still makes me sad. But hey, I am also happy that I had the honour to actually see him race. Live on Zandvoort( 78,79,80,81) and Zolder (79,80,81)and on direct tv broadcasts.

And at least Jacques, his son, was a deserved World Champion in'97. Justice done.

Thanks! I've been looking for footage with the infamous "staggered double rear wing"...one of the few times Ferrari has ever "creatively interpreted the rules"! Plus that example of Gilles driving his Ferrari like a WOO sprint car through a corner in the rain...his knack of being able to do so made him one of the most exciting drivers off all time!
