  • How did you get that backround, did you edit the video?

  • @leolovestrumpet Just a homemade green screen and FCP.

  • Most of the viewers here won't be able to buy a Monette trumpet which go for around $8000.00 to $10,000 bucks. I am lucky I bought my Bach Stradivarius in 1970 for $260.00! That was when trumpets were not priced so high as they are now, a Bach Stradivarius goes fro around $2000.00 or more.My old Bach still plays great.

  • @grawlin i mean the F above the ledger lines btw.

  • @Whatabummer11 I have lots of help for you. Go to:

grawlin.com and read the first few new weekly tips on the weekly tips page. They will really help and then my website has 100's of pages of free teaching and downloads:)

    Thanks

  • @grawlin I play on a 10 1/2 C Mouthpiece and my band director says I have a great sound for such a mouthpiece. Usually I play the C-scale a couple times then play that up an octave after. I can play a good, bold, solid F but that's all. Do you have any other ideas for a good warm-up to play high and not blow my chops? I have good chops, I think, considering I'm a sophomore in Hs. But do you have a good warm-up you do too play high

  • im a sophmore in high school i play the trumpet and sometimes when i play it sounds bad and when i try to tighten my lips it sometimes gets better sometimes it gets worse i think its an embochure problem i tried telling my band directors he said he was going to help me the next day and never did im asking u can help with this so i can at least have a better sound on trumpet and also so i can become better

  • So, I'm presuming that the bottom valve casings are heavier?

  • @TGloodt The newer Monette caps are bigger and a little heavier. The distance from the bottom of the valve when depressed is further from the cap than on the original. This extra space allows the midrange to carry further by boosting it in the overall mix.

  • Push the valves down with the tips of your fingers

  • What is mouth piece are you using in this video? You sound amazing :D

  • @Oxii5 This is a Reeves/Purviance P1 model

  • Hey, can you tell me how to write it into your score when you want the brass player (trompet or trombone especially) to "open" and "close" the mute on one single note, so that it sounds like wuaaah-wuaaaah? I'd need this effect for my score. Thank you very much ;)

  • @FilmComposeRaHoppe ... like glissando

  • What mouthpiece do you play on? I'm looking for a mouthpiece that provides an easier time playing higher but keeping a full sound. I play on a 5C now, after moving from a 5B. I had a solid C on the 5B, and a good D up to an occassional F on the 5C. My marching band director at Western carolina told me to maybe switch to a Schilke 14A4A, 13A4A, or even a 6A4A but I love a full sound more than screaming. What is a good way to make these two worlds meet. Love the videos, by the way!

  • I'm not sure of the fingering technique all the way down to the third knuckly, George! Those of you who are learning would do well to listen to george Rawlin. He is a wonderful player and a better teacher. Forget about how he doesn't curl his fingers and all that. His relaxed sound is one developed over a lifetime, he can lay his big mitts on the valves however he wishes. Play the right way now, change later, when you've got your technique down.

  • whenever I play my trumpet, I always have a buzzing noise. How do I fix that?

  • @jakeb2684 Most likely just air escaping from the side or sides of your lips. Unless eople notice I wouldn't worry about it. It means your relaxed. Trying to close up the leak can create more issues than it's worth

  • @grawlin ok thanks

  • @jakeb2684 If you are referring to your sound, I would recommend getting a BERP. They are good for any brass player to use. They really help your sound, range and endurance.

  • i have a problem when i play. when i warm up i dont play in the high register as i do when i dont warm up. if i just sit down and start playing i have a better sound quality than when i warm up. can you explain what is goin on?

  • @TheCinnatrix Warm up is a funny item:) You should establish a general 5 minute warm up that covers the bases, and then for each day you can add or subtract, depending on how your chops feel.

To maximize endurance and range you MUST begin your warm up with VERY soft mid range tones - DO NOT PLAY BELOW THE STAFF . After 4 or 5 minutes of these super soft tones you have re-introduced your lips to the "closed" position.

If you regularly play big low tones to warm up you are wasting your time.

  • @grawlin ok thanks ill give it a try. but i normally just do the c scale and then do lip slurs.

  • Whenever I play My lips kind of droop in the middle of a song and get tired so I'm not able to hit my high notes as much as I can. ;(

  • @67Crazyboyz Please purchase my downloadable videos called AirPlay from my website: grawlin.com they will set you free and they are CHEAP:)

  • :50 There's a firefly in your horn.

  • Why in the world would you be playing a Monette trumpet without a Monette mouthpiece?!? Dave makes his mouthpieces specifically to enhance the players natural resonance within the sound. All of your problems are coming from you not using the equipment designed specifically for that trumpet. No need to search for the right backbore/cup/rim setup when the answer lies in the mouthpiece design itself. If you're not going to use it correctly, give it to me and I definitely will put it to good use.

  • @davisdillon2002

Who said I had any problems? Sometimes I use Daves pieces sometimes I don't. When Dave made my Monette he let me choose whatever mouthpiece I wanted. It wasn't a problem with him. The answer never lies in one item. The answer is between your ears!

  • everytime i play my trumpet for a long time...my lips would go numb and i dont know why that happens..can u help me?

  • @softballVolleyball1 Several causes: 1. Too much pressure, 2. not enough relaxed air, 3. Lips very open when playing, 4. improper warm up

Fixed by long tones soft and easy with warm up. Developing air support. Getting a good teacher

  • @grawlin

Thank you....i told my band director and he helped me and sometimes they still go numb but not much anymore...

  • its Monet, hes a really nice guy. I went up to his shop in Portland.

  • Epic greenscreen fail.

  • not to be mean but its pronounced with a french lik to it not monet but mone-a

  • @whiteguyanonymous1 Beg to differ. He is a friend and you can also watch his videos here on utube.

  • @ grawlin How can one practice tone so as to cause a profound glorious tone analogous to yours? It sounds so wonderfully practiced with a fantastic vibrato with your addition of range. How can I practice this effect?

  • @dvnbrennan1 Listening to many good trumpet players develops your ear for good tone. Then by developing your air to be big, relaxed and yet powerful will support it. The tone is like a small ship being supported by a big deep ocean. Keep the center of your lips relaxed and let the big muscles around your lips do the work. And most important - deep your jaw open and forward to let the air have a clear passage.

  • @dvnbrennan1 long tones and lip slurs.

  • dude you can see through the bell

  • Painful means that you are allowing you chops to be trapped between the rim and your teeth. Usually caused by too much tension in your face and lips hat traps the air from being expelled in a relaxed manner. Use more open teeth, gently touching lips, and easy "breathing" not blowing. Warm up like this and then begin moving up and down the horn with the same free feeling in your face. My DVD shows all of this.:)

  • You have an amazing tone.. very helpful tips too. I have been playing for three years, and i can hardly play a G above the staff, and that's not good seeing as im in marching band.. It is very painful to play in the higher register, do you have any tips to help me with that?

  • no offense but your not supposed to play the trumpet with your fingers straight, your supposed to play with the tips of your fingers

  • @laughingstock96 I don't think you're offending anyone, but there is no one way to play the trumpet. I used to play with the tips of my fingers, but my trumpet professor told me to play with my fingers straight. I actually found that this gave me more control and increased my dexterity.

  • is double c goood range for an eight grader.....?

  • @esteban1BS

No 8th grader should believe a true double C is normal - however a C above the staff is called High C and that is very normal. The double C is 6 spaces above the staff! and that is for the elite

  • @grawlin i know that but i can hit a higher note above that. in open above high c ican hit 4 more open notes. :low c,g,c,e,g,c,d,than i think is f and aftter i can hit 2 more open notes. i dont know what it is though.

  • @esteban1BS The notes above hi C can be played open: c,d,e,F1st, then open G,A - good job.

  • Not a real trumpet!!

  • you sound great

  • do u have any suggestions for buying a new trumpet...... im thirteen and im paying mostly jazz and classical

  • I would look for a used Bach 37 or 43 - also WWBW has some great sales on new horns, Some of the new Bachs are in the mid teens - very good prices. Ebay can also help

  • @uniforchrist im 13 too. i just ordered a bach 72. so go with bach.

  • @uniforchrist wait, how long have yuo been playing?

  • for about four or five years

  • @uniforchrist ok then get a bach stradivarious

  • k thx

  • I'm a trumpet player. Me and my high school marching band will be in the 2010 Rose parade. I was wondering if you had any tips for me about keeping a good tone and having good sound throughout the 6 mile parade. Thanks.

  • What high school you go to?

  • Millard West High School

  • Oh cool. I'm marching in the parade too. I'm in the L.A. All-City Band. I marched last year as well.

  • is it long/ hard to march in?

  • I won't lie. It is long and it is hard, but maybe not as long and hard as you might think. Last year the bands stopped half-way through the parade for about ten minutes to rest (yes in the middle of the parade), but I'm not sure if this is standard procedure. Don't blow your chops out. If you have to, rest for a couple measures and finger your way through. And eat a hearty breakfast. One more question, what's your band's step style?

  • What do you mean 'step style'?

  • Glide step? High step? Goose step? How do you march?

  • Glide Step!

  • Oh man you got it good, glide step. We have to march high step the whole parade. Well, good luck to you and your band at Bandfest and the parade!

  • Keep the walking movement below the belt. Focus on keeping your back teeth open - this relaxes you,and keeps the airway open. Rest often by relieveing pressure on the top lip by putting extra weight from marching on the lower lip.

  • These are very good tips! Thanks a bunch!

  • Oh my God, Wuaw!! This man does very sharp sounds whit his beautiful trumpet!

  • gracias queria decirle si porfavor me lo podria traducir al español solo al ver la imagen parece interesante quisiera eso si no es mucha molestiaa graciass

  • what was the note at 1:01 ? it was freking high

  • G above Hi C

  • thanks

  • can u give me all the notes u played

  • I like how you keep saying "play with your Natural..." I see too many horn players burning them self out by forcing a sound.

  • That's alright. Not everybody has ears...

  • dont hear anything different haha

  • CASTINGSINKERS is gay lol.. ure dumb i bet u he plays better than u thats why ure mad lol.. that old man can play i dont care if he plays with his toes

  • dude... ofcourse he plays better than i do dumbass. im in 7th grade band

  • haha greenscreen fail xD rele good playing tho!!

  • he is playing with his fingers when he is supposed to play with is finger tips

  • @castingsinkers

That isn't necessarily true. I play my trumpet with my knuckles.

  • @Skrothn well thats pretty stupid

  • My point was that it doesn't matter how you press the valves. All that matters is the sound that comes out.

  • wrong. if you play them with a slant, they will eventually screw up the valves and they will get stuck.

  • Yes, playing them with a slant can cause the valves to be damaged. What does that have to do with other people. Playing the trumpet at a slant does not make a person less of a player. In terms of ability, finger placement doesn't matter. What matters is the sound that comes out. Now in regards to the care of an instrument it does matter. To me, it is on the player to repair the instrument if he breaks it and slanted fingers don't count for shit. You aren't "supposed" to play in any way.

  • woah. little angry here? s'ok. didn't mean to offend u. i know it will not make u a worse player or impair your ability to play, however, over time, it will damage your horn. so we agree.

  • Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as angry. You didn't offend me in the slightest. The only thing that bothers me is when people say you have to play a certain way. It's good we agree though. :)

  • no prob. good. yeah, well you don't have to, but it's better to not play like that for your horns sake. so yeah.

  • i would like to see that

  • @castingsinkers Excellent observation.

  • @castingsinkers wow, i really dont see how that matters, that literally has absolutely nothing to do with anything at all, its what comes out of the horn that counts.

  • @castingsinkers some trumpet players like to play like tht...it may feel comfortable to them!:)

  • @castingsinkers does it matter that much? this video concerns tone. not shaping your fingers properly

  • @castingsinkers "Supposed"? By the music police?

  • @castingsinkers Maybe but It works for him everyone plays differently.

  • @castingsinkers Maybe but It works for him everyone plays differently.

  • 0:52 There's a ghost in your bell.

  • thoses are desines

  • your really good i just started playin trumpet and i am a little confused hope i will be a gud as you

  • i agree with this concept completely. I have demonstrated constantly to freshmen and even upperclassmen this concept. I would get a 1 1/2C Bach, a 3C Bach, and a shilke 14A4A (along with any other mouthpeices around that were different). You should always be able to get the same quality of sound no matter what, and just use the mouthpiece you are able to use the best to compliment your embouchre. One of my friends sounds as dark on a Shilke 14A4A as another friend on a 1C Bach.

  • Well said. I play on the same size mouthpiece I started on, a yamaha 11 which is equal to a bach 7c. I have tried bigger mouthpieces but actually got a worse tone.

  • i suggest 3c

  • sorry ,what do you mean by core, in core balance?

  • nice!can i have your trumpet

  • green screen software great video

  • why could we see through the bell
