  • Great video! I am going to be filming a short film in a few weeks and wondering what audio i should get. Lots of people have been talking about the zoom h4n. My short will take place outside, and i will also be creating more shorts in the future. I also have a web series/documentary that i talk straight to camera at times. Do you think the h4n would be good for my projects if so do i need to get a boom or lavalier mics? or neither? Thanks so much for the help! :)

  • @JahnnaRandall yeah there are a lot of DSLR videographers who use the H4N for this. The foam windscreen is inadequate for outdoor use though. Pick up a high quality windscreen or get the kit from B&H that has a good windscreen, hotshoe adaptor and other goodies.

  • which is better zoom h4n or apogee duet for recording acoustic guitar?

  • @jograd08 duet is a dedicated input interface for mac's. h4n is a portable recorder that can act as an input device but it's not the zoom's primary function. kinda comparing apples to oranges.

  • It's called a Dead Cat... not the wind thing lol Very nice demo.

  • How do you get the files off can you remove a media card or plug the unit into a PC via USB and it shows up as a Mass storage device?

  • @coondogtheman1234 yeah the owners manual tells you the various ways you can connect the USB whether it's to transfer files from the unit or to use it as a recording input interface that recording software can use. or you can remove the card and use something like a usb card reader to transfer files or a memory card slot on a printer if available.

  • @FastRedPonyCar

I have a few SD card headers most of them SDHC ready. I went on the zoom website and it said to use the plugs on the bottom of the unit with adaptors to record line in. I will have to either buy or make a patch cord. Can you use this as a normal MP3 player. I think I remember seeing on the site that u can.

  • @coondogtheman1234 yeah you can I believe if you use the folder browse and point to the file you want to play. it wouldn't be any different than playing back a recorded sound file.

  • Are you still using this? If so, How would you rate it after a full year's use?

  • @cakire82 yep. Still use it. I use it for the vocal commentary on all my videos. I also used it for the audio capture on my dyno videos I did recently. I would say that a nice wind screen is mandatory if you use it outside as the mics are REALLY sensitive to wind noise. The unit is incredibly powerful too and has tons of features/modes/etc that I haven't even touched yet. It really is an all in 1 solution to portable audio work.

  • I think it sounds great, I like that you can hear the cab pushing the air in the room. It sounds more "natural" so to speak than just micing the cab. But it does seem like it needs a little bit more bottom end. How are you liking it so far.

  • @mudbone80 love it. I did a comparison of my home theater cranked and had the internal camera mic and the H4 going at the same time then watched the video with the 2 different audio sources. no comparison. H4 is so much better than the camera's mic it's not even funny.

  • If I'm honest, compared to the Suhr Doug Aldrich pick-up video, the sound here is nowhere near as full and punchy. It seems kinda bass-less.

Your Doug Aldrich video easily has the best tone I've ever heard you produce, or anyone from Youtube in fact. Maybe it was the pedal + the closed doors + the pick-ups, I don't know. Either way it was awesome.

  • @angrygoldfish yeah the sound structure was competely different in this video. different mic setup, more focus on the room acoustics/sound, etc.. true though that I do agree that the JP6 (regardless of which pickup is in it) is cleaner/clearer and better sounding than the C66.. Had I grabbed the JP6 for this particular setup though, it wouldn't have sounded near as good as the others that I do with the doors closed and more focus on the direct mic'ing.

  • What DSLR were you using for this? and Which lens? Seems to be alot of vignetting going on. Is that actually from the lens or did you add that in post?

  • @Acidrain1993 Used the T2i with a sigma 30mm f/1.4. vignetting added with magic bullet looks.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Dang. Nice lens. \m/

  • Hey drew, do you still have the port city 212? I want to buy one, but i want to hear your opinion :P

  • @GuitarRocks23455 I love it. It doesn't have quite the sound spread and 3D`ness of the Whitebox 2x12. I suspect if the PC cab were removable back, it'd be more open sounding on stage.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Damn, now you got my looking in whitebox now lol.

The prices are great as well.

  • That Titan sounds so god damn good

  • Sounds pretty good. It does sound different than your earlier videos. Especially the

" Blank Stare " video. That sounds like it is in stereo. The fuzzy wind sock looks like a dead animal. LOL What did the H4N run you?

  • @hawg427 I got the DSLR combo deal at B&H photo for about 400 bucks. I didn't use any room audio mic'ing during the blank stare video.
