No, each 'community' doesn't have its own spokesman. Steele isn't the 'spokesman' for black America anymore than anybody else. Yet, the media treats and has treated, men like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton AS spokesman; individuals that they'll go to if a particular issue requires a 'black' response - and, historically, those two offer nothing but liberal foolishness.

Shelby Steele is a counterpart to that; he offers up experiential wisdom that crosses ethnic boundaries.

Well, since I've been on the planet for 48 years, I HAVE done some living. I DO know what works and what doesn't.

When I see the incredible incarceration among blacks, the 70% out-of-wedlock rate among blacks (which was about 10% as late as the 1940's - LESS than that of whites), the fact that 50% of all black female teenagers have an STD - yet black America CONTINUES to look to the government for its leadership - then I know that intellectuals like Steele will strike a chord - if heard.

Its important to analyze black men like Selby Steele, because he is nothing more than a well dressed, educated, petty opportunist. He has good delivery, but do not let his broad vocabulary, and deliberate demeanor fool you. If you listen carefully to his content you will find little substance in his message. In fact he is often contradictory .His secondary goal other than self is to help make those angry guilty ridden white folks who financially support him to feel better about them selfs.

Shelby Steele is genuinely a genius. Even if your interest in African American issues is negligible, you will be blown away by his analysis on everything.

Media Matters, of course, wants to depict him in a misspeak with regards to the subtitle of his book on Senator Obama, but ALL of Steele's book and writings are must-reads if you want to hear intelligent commentary on racial issues from a perspective of someone who doesn't have a chip on their shoulder.

Much of Steele's perspective is common sense - something that's lacking in 'talking head' television...

Mr. Steele, who grew up during the segregation of the 1950's, who adopted the 'black power' pose of the early 1970's, who favored liberal politics through the 1980's, basically saw the damage and estruction that those worldviews inflicted upon black America.

Consequently, he began to think for himself and came to his own conclusions about life - and what works.....the exact opposite of 'self-loathing.'
