Sumi Jo and Karajan! A music god and goddess. if I ever meet them here on earth or in the afterlife , then I will be in music heaven indeed! thank you for sharing this!
Interesting, I don't know much about voice (since I'm a violinist), is the Queen of The Night a piece that can ruin your voice if sung repeatedly as Karajan suggested?
@VeronnieA The Tenor in the background is Robert Gambill who makes actually his career mostly in Europe. He was a great lyric Tenor in the past ( as this video was recorded ) and today he is singing Wagner Repertoire. :-)
@wincodetalker Actually, it was Karajan who forced the Berlin Philharmonic to accept its first woman member, the great clarinetist Sabine Meyer. He had to fight long and hard to get her admitted the Philharmonic and this created a lot of bad blood between conductor and orchestra.
if Karajan had lived longer, and Sumi hadn't recorded that song with Solti, she must made her great career with Karajan. and maybe...developed her repoitoire to typical liric. just as Karajan forced Freni to develop her liric voice to spinto voice. who know that? ^^
@Zofzoeif This secene is taken from the documental "Karajan in Salzburg" filmed in 1987. The documental was edited on VHS and Laser Disc, but not on DVD yet. Karajan fell from a tree in his youth; his spinal was injured. In 1976 he fell again during a rehersal in the orchestal place. He also suffered heart's troubles. In his last years he walked with notorious difficulties.
I love how Sumi Jo sings one of the most difficult part of one of the most difficult soprano arias almost perfectly on command. Barely warmed up, just sitting down and smiling. No big deal or anything... lol
Domine Deus??duet with the tenor?? he has to sit there listening to queen of the night, a gig that Sumi Jo doesnt even want to do because HvK asked her about the same dates, a year hence!!!! WHILE HE TALKS ABOUT MACHINE-GUNS...
SHES SAD BECAUSE YOU DIDNT GIVE GER THE JOB FOR THE EASTER DATES YOU AASKED ABOUT..("NOTHING TOO SPECIAL".."I DONT KNOW WHOS CONDUCTING")
WELL she didnt do what he asked her to!!! ATTACK THE NOTE LIKE HE SAID!
@dxhtz Although Karajan could be a tyrant sometimes, I don't see that in this video. Here he is giving Sumi Jo EXTREMELY valuable advice about not letting greedy record companies and uncaring conductors push her voice so hard that it damages her vocal chords. He asked her to sing a little bit of the QotN aria because he was shocked that Philips was pressuring a young, inexperienced soprano to record such a difficult role and wanted to be sure she was ready for it. He was looking out for her.
This video was taken from the documentary "Karajan in Salzburg", directed by Susan Fromke and released in VHS by Deutsche Grammophon in 1988 and unfortunately out of print.
Honestly, I cried when I watched it. Seeing young Cecilia Bartoli and Sumi Jo, whom nowadays are highly praised and cherished worldwide, being instructed by the ingenious Karajan is absolutely priceless. And it's particularly moving to see Sumi Jo receiving what I suppose was the greatest acknowledgement she'd been honored with up to that day. @smoothiw, thank you so much for sharing this footage with all of us!
I wonder if there is a recorded version of this duo (Sumi and Cecilia) because here it sounds so beautiful that I'd love to have the studio (or live) complete recording if it exists
I love this video. It´s so interesting the way they all act, von Karajan seems so natural and easy going. You expect someone this big behave in a cruel way (like many others with by far less talent), but he looks so relaxed, encouraging her all the time. Sumi jo sounds amazing
I can't stop watching at this video. I love Sumi's voice and I agree Maestro Karajan, her voice is just as clear as water. I'd love to know the name of the song she sings first, I belive is a Bach's cantata (as can be seen in the books they have)
great advice! He's actually telling her although you can sing the role, you're too young for that! You'll loose your voice! I hope she followed it lol
The aria at the end of this post is called: "O zittre nicht, mein lieber sohn". It is the first aria sung by The Queen of the Night (Konigen der Nacht). It comes from Mozart's Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute).
the trainer is an asshole... how can she rich extrem high note in the morning (her voice is not enough wake up...she has to warn is voice OF COURSE stupid guy)
this is Hervet von Karajan. If he told you to single high notes underwater in 30 degree weather you would do it, no questions, thank you. And on your way.
Don't get carried away. He did seem to have quite a disregard for which roles are suitable for which voices. And there are examples of those who did what he said and those who didn't.
who is the vocal teacher... he must be a very revered teacher. i'm not too familiar with the opera world. his reaction was very funny. he didn't realize her mistake until a few seconds later. hahaha
Well, for those who don't get, Karajan is concerned about Sumi's voice.
She told him she will record Mozart's Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), roling The Queen of the Night, in Easter for Phillips. She doesn't know where or who's conducting. Karajan says she can do it, but is concerned, because some bad conductors, don't fit the orchestra to the singers voice and then records all day, asking the solist to sing louder and louder. "And a bit of your voice is left there".
At 6:44, after she sings the top F, Karajan says something and she replies, before laughing. What is that? (also, I've just realized that the reason Mozart makes the entire accompaniment stop after the Top F is to allow the singer to improvise cadenzas, ending with a trill, which we never hear anymore today. People don't dare improvise on Queen of the Night anymore! Haha)
She learned piano and vocal music from 4 years old. and She entered into the Seoul university in Korea with top score. I mean She was already best student at Seoul University in Korea. Then she made boyfriend. They fell in love deeply. and she wanted to get married. but her parents wanted she kept studying to be a great musician. Then she was 22 yesrs old. so suddenly,She went to Italy. and they seperated.
She didn't fail this rehearsal. She begins her international career with the patronage of Karajan after this meeting. She recorded Verdi's Un Ballo conducted by him, and they made schedules like Bach on Easter... Anyway, He died!!! :)
This is no audition but a rehearsal. And "needed to accompany"? The alto part of the b minor mass isn't just "accompaniment for the soprano". What a strange sense for sacred music you have! And why is the Asian look of a singer a problem for a church concert? By the way I liked Karajan's reaction when he asked Sumi Jo "Who is conducting". ;)
Smoothiw. Please we need more information on this post as to if you can supply us the whole video or any more information on it? This video is such a footnote! Thanks for posting.
Can anyone tell me what von Karajan was telling Sumi Jo about the Queen of the Night? I had some difficulty understanding the conversation. Was he saying that she wasn't ready for the role yet?
Karajan was probably casting a b minor mass and Bartoli was already cast and Karajan asked her to sit in to get an idea how they might sound together. Karajan gave her excellent advice. Koenigin der Nacht can be a voice wrecker. She might leave part of her voice at the studio ruined.
Notice how she speaks to him in Italian and he answers in English. He speaks fine Italian but wants to keep her in a subservient role and struggling in English. Ah, power. (from an opera conductor)
Sumi jo sounded pretty amazing for what seemed like an impromptu audition with the maestro. Seemed like the great Cecilia played 2nd/3rd/4th fiddle in this clip. Isn't that usually the case when sop/ten vs ms/bass.
I love this video! I watch it religiously! Even though I don't like the Bartoli-Jo combo, those are two of the most prestigious singers around today. To see them in the same room with Karajan is historical. But does anyone agree that the voices sound slightly odd together?
Sumi's audition with Herbert?! I think he's trying to 'buy' a conductors job too (on her first recording!!) What a delight. Good grief, another gloriously technical vocalist "undoing" their own good work...in an audition?!
In addition, Herr von Karajan must give the obligatory minute of admiration to one of his array of automobiles! 0-100 in 3 secs? Nice intro to Sumi Jo AND Cecelia. What luxury...I'll be watching this again n again too!!
excellent! You have a good hearing, but don't understand in musical theory. There is no F6, or so what, that is, however, the hardest and the highest aria in classical opera literatur: f3. Not to mention the all colloraturs, which are performed by the Queen of the Night, and not whole right performed by yung Sumi Jo. However, not so bad, isn't it?:)
and he says : "I commanded a porche...i am number 60 in the factory list.....it goes 0-60 in 3 sec....its the only way to keep rust from etting in your brain!!!!" Love that!
Sumi Jo and Karajan! A music god and goddess. if I ever meet them here on earth or in the afterlife , then I will be in music heaven indeed! thank you for sharing this!

Italian

I was trying to answer operaticlove's question but even though I hit "reply" my comment did not nest below theirs! They were all speaking Italian.

What's the highest note she hits during this live session?
jazzmusicfan 4 years ago
I think, it is F6 during O Zittre Nicht, however I am not completely sure
(:
EllimanAtomica 4 years ago
It is a high F however she's slightly under the note which is why they stop cause she didn't quite hit it.
Joeleole 4 years ago
Schwarzerjohann 4 years ago
Its true, I am not so good at musical theory. The exams are the bane of my life haha. I always fail them.
EllimanAtomica 4 years ago
actually elliman, you are right. f6 IS the note she almost sings here, f3 is by no means a soprano note.

I thought it was. Maybe I'm not as bad as I thought haha
Thanks.
