now that i notice it, the WBBM main set was in their newsroom, and their 5:30 report/First Edition set was in Studio 1, which was their main studio from i believe 1991-2009 when they moved to their new broadcast facility.
So many thumbs. Man Bill and Linda were the best. I remember making up a rude song about Adele Arakawa to the tune of a John Lennon song. I miss the 90s. The 2000s were a real piece of crap.
If I do my time telling correctly, if WBBM then had a 4:30, 5:00 and a 6:00 newscast and the CBS Evening News was on at 6:30 (CT - likely tape delayed) then the live (ET) primetime was on at 7:00? Were any news mags and other evening shows moved earlier, or other stations had them?
i wonder if this clip was before, during, or after channel 2's dreaded "tabloid" era. also, long before lester holt joined the proud nbc news family, he was right there at wbbm television. did you notice?
I think they should go back to doing a 5:30-6:00pm local newscast with the CBS Evening News at 6pm like it used to be. It would offer viewers some variety with local news at 5:30.
Well, most stations in the CST prefer to carry the national news live, alongside with the east coast. However, Foxes in the CST (well, at least in one market: Dallas) have a 5:30 local news.
Does anyone have the BBM opening with the roving Chicago skyline. I think that was like late 80's or something. I thought that was a cool one. Thanks!
The voice over announcer's name is Charlie Van Dyke. From what I learned about Van Dyke, he was ordained a Roman Catholic Deacon sometime back. This is what he does as a second job!! He got his career going in Dallas at KLIF radio!!
Does anyone know the name of the announcer who does the voiceover for this news open. I've heard him for years doing voiceovers for local tv and radio stations around the country. He still does VO's for KOIN-TV in Portland, Oregon, among other stations.
I have that mic flag from WBBM in mint condition. It's a very cool flag with the orange 2, over a black background, on two sides and an orange Chicago skyline on the other two sides.
where did you get that mic flag from? Do you have more? If you do, i would love to buy one from you. Im an aspiring reporter, and i would love to have a piece of nostalgia from my favorite news station's past.
I remember hearing that Linda retired from the anchoring to spend more time with her husband and children. She basically wanted to focus more on her family.
I can't believe this. The guy doing the voiceover work for WBBM is the announcer currently doing the KPNX-TV in Phoenix. I forget his name, but he is still doing it!
Not to burst any bubbles, but that looks like two sets to me, not three. Looks like just changed the window dressing a bit on the 4:30/5:30 set between shows. Also, KCBS DID use that same open and has spent God knows how much on news sets (anyone remember The "NewsWheel?"), yet their best ratings were when they just did the news from their newsroom.
@hkfreak It's only two sets, the 4:30 and 5:30 are the same. The monitor panel in the back center on the 4:30 is switched out for the "5:30 Report" panel at 5:30.
she left in 1993 it says on wikipedia. Wow, i love these promos. Its sort of sad to see Walter Jacobson at the end of his tenure though, he was a good anchor for WBBM. Same goes for Bill Kurtis.
that half hour was taken up when the national evening news moved from 7:00 to 6:30. BBM carried the East Coast edition live (for the west coast, I think it's pre-recorded.). So, the 5:30 is out, and a newer 6 was made.
that theme sounded like the WCBS theme

i guess the multiple sets was when they were in the ratings slump in the early ninties.

hkfreak 4 years ago
WUSA had three different sets in the early 90s for the 4-5-and 6 and 11pm shows also, its not unprecedented!

2 sets....4:30 and 5:30 were the same

The lady on the 4:30 and 5:30 is Adele Arakawa. I dont know when she left CBS2 but she is now on KUSA-TV 9News in Denver.

Oh thanks. Nobody else would answer that question until u came up.
