he wasn't sick with cancer. most of his family died within a span of a year or two.the theory was though never proven was when the storyline on ATWT when jen died it brought back his familys death and it was supposedly too much for him to bear and thats why he commited suicide.

The actor who played Hal killed himself because he had cancer and it was so bad that the doctor's couldn't do anything about it and so forth.

Ben didn't have cancer. He was depressed. His family pretty much died in the span of a year or something.
