I've already said it on DT, but thank you for this farrenfox! I've also discovered that if you move your hands down the lock in sections; you can tighten up the entire dread that way!
thanks for the vid, i find it funny that i couldnt find a tip like this from african american dread tip vids (im black btw) so i appreciate the tip! i did this on my back dreads and it added a good amount of length to them which i didnt really expect :)
I don't know why but this tip seriously works like magic! The hand is soooo much better of a bass to rub your dread on then your scalp. Kudos to you and THANK YOU so freakin much! It saves me like HOURS everyday haha
hey.. can you help me.... what can you do if your hair grows... like.... the base of the dread its not locked.... its just natural straight hair... what should you do to lock it again?
thank you so much for making this video! ive been hoping for a fast easy quick fix for my root fuzzies for so long!! if you could post more dreadlock videos that would be really awesome =) also, if you use your method, and then crochet it after would that make it a little more permanant?
i left my rubber bands in too long and now my roots are very undreaded and i have so many frizzies i dont know what to do with them. Will this method help lock up the roots aswell?
8 years with dreads, how come your dreads are so short and thin? just curious, they look good by the way, were they done or grown naturally? keep up the good work with the helpful tips too :D
@Streetzisdeathrow Everyone's dreads are different. They can be sectioned to be different sizes width-wise, but you don't know how big they are actually going to become once you are just starting out, though through sectioning it differently you can have a bit of control over it. Also, not everyone's dreadlocks grow at the same rate, depending on the hair type.
@b00merangd0ll yes but over time the hair that breaks stays in therfore the dreadsize thickens over time...so the only explanation would be if her hair is very healthy and she gets little to no hair breakage at all
@Streetzisdeathrow On average, we lose around 50 - 100 hairs a day, and it stays in the dread. Health factors affect it, but it doesn't stop it from happening.
AWESOME, thanks so much! I just did my dreads this past weekend with a friend, and neither of us could figure out a way to get the frizzies to go away.
Great tutorial. =] I'd really love if you'd do a tutorial on how to START dreadlocks. I'm a white girl too, (haha) and have no idea how to start. I did go to a couple of websites, but I think it'd be easier for me to actually see the process and hear it explained out loud.

@geoffreydesantis I used a little wax at the beginning too, then I got lazy and stopped using it... then almost a year later I cut them off ;_; and there was a lovely gunky wax core, along with all the dirt and lint it attracted. I know some people who got mildew in their dreads because wax is non-water soluble and actually ends up trapping moisture in there after a while. A better solution is aloe vera gel. And yeah, crocheting breaks hairs, leading to thinning and breakage.
@farrenfox dang ok well i wont do it anymore lol Im having a hard time finding solid methods. i just need to let it go longer i guess. my acual dreads cant be longer than 5 inch
First thing. I love your dreads and they look very good on you. Never seen them on a white girl to be incredulously hones. And each time you twist, you get SOME of the hairs to get (in some way) 'into' the dread. One time is NOT the charm.
Good tip, but my dreads are very knotted and are very fat and hard, so, the movement doesnt help, because your hands hurt. (i dont speak english jejejeje)
Thank you, I never got the 'root rubbing' technique, and this one makes more sense :P
Well I can't use this YET, as I started my dreads.. oh 3 days ago, and re-backcombed yesterday and today, so I'd say day 1 again. Anyways, I'm gonna pm you
in my opinion dreads are not meant to be 'perfect'. there will always be fuzzies so I think people who are asking 'how can I have perfect dreadlocks all the time' are missing the point a bit.
hey, firstly great vid and dreads looking fabulous :)
and have few questions :) how to make perfectly dreaded roots for ever?!! I have dreads for about a year and still have 1-2 cm undreaded roots.. and the method of rolling dread between fingers works just for day or two.. than it becomes undreaded again.. can you help me? btw, I have much more thicker dreads, can it be the problem? thx for answer :))
There is no PERMANENT way for roots to be tight and nice. Hair grows. And moves.
There is going to be loosness in the roots, and there's nothing wrong with that.
The only way to have a "permanent" tightness in the roots, is to actually KEEP doing the maintenence routines daily/every other day, or whenever needed. Eventually the loose hair will grow into a tight dread, but it's still going to have the looser hair at the roots.
but the girl looks like she has really nice and permanently dreaded roots..and i saw many dreads like that, perfectly dreaded, so i was wondering, whats the right way to make it like that.. :/
It won't let me post the link, but here's a video of how to clean up loose hairs with a crochet hook. This method is a lot more permanent, although the hair can still work it's way loose again. But most of the time I find that it stays in there fairly well. But yeah.
Just type in "Maintaining dreadlocks with a crochet hook" in the search bar and it will be the first video in the list.
I don't like it either. But he/she might. And I know others who do. I've personally had problems with the crochet hook getting stuck in the center of my dread when trying to pull the loose hair through. It's not really worth the hassle. And your "perfect dreads are an illusion" comment is golden. I completely agree with everything mentioned in it.
In my opinion, perfect dreads are an illusion - people will always think other's dreads are nicer than theirs. 1-2 cm of undreaded hair is NORMAL and GOOD - otherwise there would be too much tension on the root and you would be able to see all the scalp between dreads, making you appear bald. Love your dreads for what they are and in 2 years you'll be amazed at how far they've come.
yoh our hair look fab! how long was your hair when you started your dreads? i have about 10 but they've shrunk from my shoulders to little stumps... i'm curious how yours were at the start?
My hair was past my shoulders and shrunk up to shoulder length. Even though shrinking seems bad it is a good indication that your dreads are locking up and maturing! It is definitely a good thing!
Hello, just curios as to the disclaimer at the end. When you say it's not permanent, you're pretty much saying new growth won't grow "knotted", correct? thanks for the great vid btw :)
I say that it is non permanent because this method spins the loose hairs around the dreadlock, and occasionally they will become locked onto themselves, but not really onto the dreadlock like sewing in loose hairs does. As soon as you put on a hat or a hood, the hair usually comes unraveled.
Ah, gotcha :) well how often do you do this? loving the way your locks look. I've had my locks close to a year and they have loads of loose hairs in between. Tried to crochet, and failed miserably.
Do you have any other forms of maintenance? If you do then maybe, just maybe if you can spare the time to make more tutorials. As this was easy to follow and fun to watch.
I don't do it very often, only before an important meeting at work or before a wedding or something like that. I don't do any thing else to my hair besides wash it!
Amazing :-)

Thing is you could make it permanent if you use wax after rubbing the hairs to the root, call it what you wish, and 'cement' the hair into the dread.
