I was in melbourne Florida directly in the eye What a trip! The neighbors power never went out ours crashed early on. We drove through downtown melbourne in my mom's 68 Ford GT fastback During the eye it was surreal!
A Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, David was among the deadliest hurricanes in the latter half of the 20th century, killing over 2,000 people in its path, mostly in the Dominican Republic.
Hurricane David was the strongest hurricane to strike the Dominican Republic in recorded history, and the deadliest since the 1930 Dominican Republic Hurricane.
I moved to Dominican Rep. 2 weeks before the storm hit from NY. It was a cat 5 when it hit DR. the eye was just 20 miles from the capital Sto.dgo. It was my first hurricane and I was just 10 yrs old. It just totaled the country. In my house there was 4 coconut trees. And all 4 fell to to the ground. This is a hard tree to rip from the ground. It took 3 months for power to be restored.
I was born & raised in Broward (though I haven't lived there since 1995) & David was the first hurricane I remember. I was 4 & lived in Miramar at the time. I remember watching Bob Weaver on WTVJ-4 & Neal Frank @ the Natl Hurricane Center a lot. I also remember after this storm a lot of urban & street flooding in my neighborhood &, as a kid, was fun to ride my bike in all the deep water.
Thanks for the comment! I probably don't have any radar loops from Dennis(81) at least I don't remember recording any, but for Kate(85), Floyd(87), Keith(88), Marco(90) and Bob(91)...I probably do. I'll have to go back through some archived tapes to see what I have, but if I find any I'll post them here on YouTube.
Do you have any radar loops of Hurricane David off the Georgia coast and as making landfall in Savannah?

Wow, Hurricane David 1979. Noteworthy as the first male hurricane to be retired.
