@Spaschime In the book she was hanged. I do recommend the book by Thomas Hardy. It's beautifully written and Hardy was criticized for showing favor for a "fallen woman."
This is a horrible ending, I cried so much. Just watching this right now is making me cry. I thought it was going to be a sappy love story, was I wrong or what. After I watched this I sat there crying, my eyes out. I LOVE this movie so, but I dont think I can watch it again, because of the ending.
Rebeccarose, I have to agree with her second husband in that her first husband was gutless and had he had the passion of the man who had impregnated her, her life would have been complete.
@hichimichi I agree that's what gets me the most everything is so perfect and the violin as her just breaks me every time.
I remember watching this in 2008 and realizing that this is the only movie that really has me going at the end, I gets to the point were I can't even see the screen, and it still is the only movie that has ever made me leave a room cause I cant handle it.
i feel so sorry for angel watching this. he was so wrong to leave her but he showed he really loved her towards the end. they couldn't have picked a better angel. the part where he breaks down at the end gets me every time :(
i was genuinally holding out for a happy ending, really was. and then this! like the SADDEST ending ever =( and the morning after, i woke up and was still upset that she got put in these horrible circumstances and they couldnt be happy together =(
@zedbabe The ending is better in this version. I was soooo pissed off that they just ended the 1998 version with subtitles saying that Tess was hanged. That was just lame -__-
@mychemfreak246 hmm.. bleh! its closer to the book for sure. It was kinda gay with the subs in a way Im happy. I nearly died of sadness when I saw this lol
tess's mother is really responsible for her death. she forced tess to go claim kin where she met alec. and then he tormented her for years and in the end her mother gave him permission to do as he pleased with tess so he would provide for the family. what a selfish person.
this was the first time i cried at anything on tv/film in my life. im considering doing this for m english project, reading the book but a friend said the book will be too long to read within a months time.
@CressidaTussaud Yes, she was hanged. This movie edits some of the stuff from the book for some reason...The book is MUCH better, I really hope you've read it before :)
@CressidaTussaud haha u really should! i was forced to read it in english, and i thought it was gonna suck, but it was the best book weve been assigned so far...i have a test on it tomorrow :/
@2009joshyboy She murdered the man who raped her when she was a teenager, he forced her to marry him, then he tormented her so much that she killed him. Then she went to find Angel, and the police caught up with them and she was executed :'(
this gets me every single time still! D': gemma arterton you babe (L)
i just have to question when tess is in that room on the chair and the reveren (i think) is saying the our father prayer, what exactly are they doing? it made me very emotional ahaha :PP
I love this version so much. The only thing that ruins it is Eddie Redmayne. Don't get me wrong, he's a great (and attractive) actor on his own, but isn't suited for Angel at all!
i LOVE gemma arterton, she's an amaxing actress!!! It's an amazing book as well so be sure to read it! Thankfully that Alec berk is dead and Tess and Angel came together as well. She died in happiness...kinda! :¬|
The ending is not just sad. It's unendurable. Unendurable. And that's exactly what the author wants us to feel. At the end, we're not on the side of 'justice' or 'decency' or any public virtue; we're on Tess's side. We'll never be at peace, just as Tess cannot have been when they put the rope around her young neck.
omg i dont think ive ever cried so much watching a show.. Gemma Arterton is a BRILLIANT actress !! i hope that after The Prince of Persia she becomes more popular..she deserves it, shes so talented !
Eddie Redmayne was too boyish to play Angel. His last scenes in this mini were probably his best, but that's not saying much. Gemma Arterton and Hans Matheson out-acted him in this.
Wow! I've never seen or heard of this movie (or is it like a mini series or something??), but it sounds like it would be beautiful. I almost cried, except for my confusion and lack of long-term attachment. Even this little bit is so powerful, I can tell it must be an amazing moving experience.

lol at all the people saying they wish this could have turned out better..its a fictional story, in real life, none of us would make stupid decisions like leaving your wife/husband to go to brazil or holding back on telling them about being raped
I wish so badly that they'd danced together that first time, or that they'd never heard about the D'Urbervilles, or that Angel had forgiven her, or so many other things...
But I suppose then we wouldn't have this beautifully poignant ending that makes me cry everytime I watch it...
Version of Tess of the D'Urbervilles from 1998, with Justine Waddell in Tess role is much better I think. Actors, music, direction...everything is better.
I could hardly see this final scene for tears, I was sobbing like a baby. Angel if only you had loved her in the way she loved you and in the way she deserved to be loved ? Gut wrenching stuff.
my favourite version has to be the one from 1998 but I still thoroughly enjoyed this series and music sooo beautiful- perfectly fits the emotions in the scene
This ending is so sad - she suffered so much during her lifetime. Such an excellent portrayal from such strong actors. At least she can finally be at peace. Shame it came when she finally found happiness though
I think in those days, when you killed someone and was a woman and the evidence was so clear you didn't stand a change, he should have stayed with her when he married her, weak for leaving her and blaming her for something that wasn't her fault, saddest film ever
I never cry at anything on T.V, but this scene, accompanied with a very well played and poignant violin, made me cry an awful lot, even when the programme was finished. A brilliant adaptation of the infamous novel.
