  • I'm crying legit tears. Dear Lord this is depressing poor Tess!!!!!!

  • Read the book. Thomas Hardy was what we would now call iconic. Up there with Dickens and Shakespeare. The book is incredible.

  • My God, Gemma Arterton was incredible in this.

  • Crying BUCKETS! :'(

  • SO SO SO SAD AND UNFAIR!!! :'(

  • @Spaschime In the book she was hanged. I do recommend the book by Thomas Hardy. It's beautifully written and Hardy was criticized for showing favor for a "fallen woman."

  • This is a horrible ending, I cried so much. Just watching this right now is making me cry. I thought it was going to be a sappy love story, was I wrong or what. After I watched this I sat there crying, my eyes out. I LOVE this movie so, but I dont think I can watch it again, because of the ending.

  • I wonder what her death sentence was?

  • Rebeccarose, I have to agree with her second husband in that her first husband was gutless and had he had the passion of the man who had impregnated her, her life would have been complete.

  • When the flag comes up, Eddie Redmayne's face killed me, so sad!

  • @hichimichi I agree that's what gets me the most everything is so perfect and the violin as her just breaks me every time.

I remember watching this in 2008 and realizing that this is the only movie that really has me going at the end, I gets to the point were I can't even see the screen, and it still is the only movie that has ever made me leave a room cause I cant handle it.

  • Brilliant BBC - such natural acting and yes, very dark in all the right places. My favourite adaptation by far.

  • I love this version, but I think I like the 1998 version more... except for Angel. He like him alot more here.

  • I'm playing Angel in a stage production of this. This scene is horrible :(

  • im not gonna cry im not gonna cry im not gonna cry oh who's kidding me i was crying but 1:00

  • i say it isthe best feeling in the world but on the recieving end is utter madness. all of them, back stabbing bastards

  • this soundtrack is so beautiful and tragic, I feel like that solo violin is Tess

  • @funkyfreshme101

    She was hung for murder

  • i feel so sorry for angel watching this. he was so wrong to leave her but he showed he really loved her towards the end. they couldn't have picked a better angel. the part where he breaks down at the end gets me every time :(

  • i was genuinally holding out for a happy ending, really was. and then this! like the SADDEST ending ever =( and the morning after, i woke up and was still upset that she got put in these horrible circumstances and they couldnt be happy together =(

the mark of an amazing story.

  • @zedbabe The ending is better in this version. I was soooo pissed off that they just ended the 1998 version with subtitles saying that Tess was hanged. That was just lame -__-

  • @mychemfreak246 hmm.. bleh! its closer to the book for sure. It was kinda gay with the subs in a way Im happy. I nearly died of sadness when I saw this lol

  • tess's mother is really responsible for her death. she forced tess to go claim kin where she met alec. and then he tormented her for years and in the end her mother gave him permission to do as he pleased with tess so he would provide for the family. what a selfish person.

  • this was the first time i cried at anything on tv/film in my life. im considering doing this for m english project, reading the book but a friend said the book will be too long to read within a months time.

  • I want that song so much...

  • WHYYY

  • how did she die and why

  • Comment removed

  • i have never ever EVER cried so much in my fucking life when i watched this series on tele it made me depressed for days :(

  • soo this a series???

  • SOOOOOO SAAAAAADDDDDD!!!

  • this movie was shitty

  • how did they kill her? cause in that scene it looked like they were gonna chop her head off, but in those days wasn't the most commen way to hang?

  • @CressidaTussaud Yes, she was hanged. This movie edits some of the stuff from the book for some reason...The book is MUCH better, I really hope you've read it before :)

  • @trishx95 okay;) no i haven't read it but i want to

  • @CressidaTussaud haha u really should! i was forced to read it in english, and i thought it was gonna suck, but it was the best book weve been assigned so far...i have a test on it tomorrow :/

  • @trishx95 Good luck!!!

  • I think it's really sad that she believes that it was too good to be true.

    "Too much happiness."

    That is so unfortunate.. :'(

  • @NicLou23 "These violent delights, have violent ends"

  • i dont get it, what happened?

  • @2009joshyboy She murdered the man who raped her when she was a teenager, he forced her to marry him, then he tormented her so much that she killed him. Then she went to find Angel, and the police caught up with them and she was executed :'(

  • who was it she killed again?

  • @TheBrecon Alec d'Urberville

  • Can someone please help me i really want to no the song name, when she is in jail and she is having flashbacks help please thanks :)

  • @missylovechick The Snows they melt the soonest

  • @737loz Thank you :)

  • Comment removed

  • @missylovechick No problems. It is such a beautiful song, isn't it?

  • @737loz Yer a very Beautiful song :)

  • gemma arterton is just simply one of THE most amazing actresses of this time <3

  • gaah. heartbreaking. eddie and gemma kills me

  • Wonderful, but not half as good as the 98. But another perfect adaptation of the book would have been too much to ask.

  • 'Too much happiness' That line always gets me. :(

  • The bit that really gets me is when Liza takes Angel's hand at the end:'(

  • There used to be a complete upload of this series on youtube a year ago, but I guess BBC had to have it taken down. Oh well. I loved this anyway.

  • @hangfirers there still is but it has spanish subtitles attatched to it

  • Thank believe she dies in the end, kisses

  • this gets me every single time still! D': gemma arterton you babe (L)

i just have to question when tess is in that room on the chair and the reveren (i think) is saying the our father prayer, what exactly are they doing? it made me very emotional ahaha :PP

  • @charcharlotte10 I think he's reading her last rites and preparing her for death.

  • 2:39-2:51 makes me want to die.

The acting in this scene was so powerful.

  • this scene makes me cry every single time! gemma arterton did such an incredible job! very sad but so powerful <3

  • I read the book. This adaption is perfect.

  • how did she die?

  • what really happens with tess she dies? help me I'm from Brazil

I do not know for sure what happens

I could not finish seeing this movie

I ask because I do not know

    Perola

  • @luzcristinaPerola Tess is hanged and Angel is implied to have married Tess's sister, Liza 'Lu.

  • BBC !

  • I love this version so much. The only thing that ruins it is Eddie Redmayne. Don't get me wrong, he's a great (and attractive) actor on his own, but isn't suited for Angel at all!

  • her mothers such a simple twat (in the book) dunno about this adaptation

  • god i love gemma arterton, why did her character have to die! :(

  • sooo sad!! :'((

I want to read the book but i dont know if it's worth of it because i know how it ends now..

  • @MonikaOMG Read the book, this was a fantastic adaptation, but nothing beats the book!

  • I LOVE THE SONG SHE SINGS - WHAT IS IT???

  • i LOVE gemma arterton, she's an amaxing actress!!! It's an amazing book as well so be sure to read it! Thankfully that Alec berk is dead and Tess and Angel came together as well. She died in happiness...kinda! :¬|

  • who did she kill here? I am watching this in school but we never got here yet

  • @PrincessTomoyo3

    she killed Alec.

  • @JuliaRussianKitten

    Ok thanks

  • why did she go to jail, why did she die?

  • no affence to the Angel her but he is not as attractive as the 1998 version of Angel I prefer him better!

  • one word- amazing

  • The ending is not just sad. It's unendurable. Unendurable. And that's exactly what the author wants us to feel. At the end, we're not on the side of 'justice' or 'decency' or any public virtue; we're on Tess's side. We'll never be at peace, just as Tess cannot have been when they put the rope around her young neck.

  • y did she die?

  • @piney12gurl

    she killed her husband.

  • @jessesgirl4eva

Angel was her husband, she was only living with Alec.

  • this was one of THE best movies with Gemma as a spectacular icon of human tragedy. i wept ever time i saw it.

  • omg i dont think ive ever cried so much watching a show.. Gemma Arterton is a BRILLIANT actress !! i hope that after The Prince of Persia she becomes more popular..she deserves it, shes so talented !

  • okay, this was my third time watching this scene, knew what was going to happen and still got so bloody emotional!

  • everytime i watch this film i cry my eyes out at this part...its so tragic. she and angel could never be together.

  • Eddie Redmayne was too boyish to play Angel. His last scenes in this mini were probably his best, but that's not saying much. Gemma Arterton and Hans Matheson out-acted him in this.

  • this is all your fault, angel

  • :'''''(

    I cried so much....

  • Watching this again, I want to cry. So well played by the actors and esp Gemma Arterton. I am going to have to join her fan club (LOL!).

  • Comment removed

  • the first time i saw this i cried my eyes out! so beautiful and sad :'(

  • why was she hung?

  • @mutiydanny Because she killed her husband Alec...

  • @mutiydanny bc she murdered her rapist

  • Wow! I've never seen or heard of this movie (or is it like a mini series or something??), but it sounds like it would be beautiful. I almost cried, except for my confusion and lack of long-term attachment. Even this little bit is so powerful, I can tell it must be an amazing moving experience.

  • @ifonlyx33

it is too bad you saw this before the whole movie itself, but you are quite right. This is a very powerful and emotional part. every time i watch it, crying or not, i feel pain.

You should watch the whole thing. It's just one of those stories...

  • @ifonlyx33 :O u watched dis b4 anything else?! U shud definitely watch the whole thing. It'll make you hate men even if you are one like me. I was fuckin hella mad at Angel.

  • @ifonlyx33 It's a mini series based on the book.... definately worth watching, it's stunning and has me in tears everytime I watch it!!! x x

  • Please, somebody just stomp on my heart with cleats. It would be less painful than watching this!

  • @SaltySweetheart i knw exactly how you feel

  • Stupid question, but how was she actually executed? Was she hung or...?

  • @TheFreeSpiritX Ya she was hung

  • The ending is not sad but tragic.

  • She suffered all her life! I thought she would go to jail and when she got out she would reunite with him. Forgot they used to hang people for murder

  • Comment removed

  • Both of them are such an amazing actors. Really impressed by both of them.

  • this story is like the best i've ever seen!

tess' life is full of sorrows and yet you can't blame her...

not like some movies where the protagonist is miserable because of something he/she has done.

  • CRYING LIKE A BABY!

  • I watched this 2 days ago and still it makes me sad D: I need to watch a happy movie.

  • In Tess of the D'Urbervilles she dies.....

In Quantum of Solace she dies......

In Clash of the Titans she dies but comes back.........

Thats alot of deaths :O I wonder what movie is next.

  • @Lighter03 way to ruin it >.>

  • @Lighter03 there's another one... in prince of persia sands of time she also dies...

well maybe she's just good at dying...

    great actress...

  • @Lighter03 well now prince of persia...in away at least ::P:P:P

  • I love and hate this story at the same time......... So sad

  • horrible !!!!!

  • Gemma Arterton was so stunning as Tess. I loved her performance. Amazing. A beautiful young woman and a lovely role for her. Lovely!

  • Very true! I can't agree more..

  • lol at all the people saying they wish this could have turned out better..its a fictional story, in real life, none of us would make stupid decisions like leaving your wife/husband to go to brazil or holding back on telling them about being raped

  • I love how in the end Tess(the eternal earth goddess) embraces her fate & in this adaptation is literally on a sacrificial alter. She will live on!

  • Does anyone know the soundtrack of this film? its the very dramatic violin pieces. i can't seem to find it anywhere!

  • This ending is more sad than the 1998 one. I do like the 1998 one better but this ending scene is a tear jerker.

  • as soon as the flag goes up, i cry.

    gemma played tess SO well.

:'( ahh. best mini series EVER.

    <333

  • I wish so badly that they'd danced together that first time, or that they'd never heard about the D'Urbervilles, or that Angel had forgiven her, or so many other things...

But I suppose then we wouldn't have this beautifully poignant ending that makes me cry everytime I watch it...

  • Version of Tess of the D'Urbervilles from 1998, with Justine Waddell in Tess role is much better I think. Actors, music, direction...everything is better.

  • I could hardly see this final scene for tears, I was sobbing like a baby. Angel if only you had loved her in the way she loved you and in the way she deserved to be loved ? Gut wrenching stuff.

  • i feel like these actors are too young...1998 version was better.

  • :/ i think that in the novel they are intended to be quite young, i think tess is about 22 when she dies and alec is about 28

  • @itwoncan2 Their supposed to be young, she was like 20 to 23 when she died. so this story probably started with her being 17 or sumting

  • I have often thought of killing my first BF for the physical damage he did to my body resulting in many surgeries and a ruined life. DIE BASTARD DIE!

  • my favourite version has to be the one from 1998 but I still thoroughly enjoyed this series and music sooo beautiful- perfectly fits the emotions in the scene

  • has thomas hardy EVER written a novel with a happy ending? If you want to be depressed i've been told 2 read jude the obscure. maybe i won't bother.

  • Under the greenwood tree had a happy ending. Return of the native kinda did...ish.

  • This ending is so sad - she suffered so much during her lifetime. Such an excellent portrayal from such strong actors. At least she can finally be at peace. Shame it came when she finally found happiness though

  • I think in those days, when you killed someone and was a woman and the evidence was so clear you didn't stand a change, he should have stayed with her when he married her, weak for leaving her and blaming her for something that wasn't her fault, saddest film ever

  • I never cry at anything on T.V, but this scene, accompanied with a very well played and poignant violin, made me cry an awful lot, even when the programme was finished. A brilliant adaptation of the infamous novel.

  • Does anybody know where I could get hold of the background song in this. I heard that it's not an orriginal piece of work for this adaptaion and that it's actually another artist.

  • Wut a horrible ending!!! I just got done reading the book in my AP Literature Class and i was so upset when i read the ending!!!!! Poor Tess, She suffered too much !!!!

  • I'm so upset by this. Why didn't he fight for her? I cried to hard at the end of this movie.

  • While I love the 1998 adaption best, this ending inexplicably caused me to cry for a prolonged period of time. And I don't cry over movies. It's...powerful. No, not Gemma Arterton. Not Eddie Redmayne. It's the actress who played Liza-Lu who gets me. She is all there. I believe her. I feel her. It's heartbreaking.

  • Why did she kill alec?

  • She did it for a lot of reasons. She felt like it would be the only way she could be with Angel and she also deeply resented him for raping her years ago and treating her horribly. She felt that he had ruined her life. She also was angry that he had said that Angel would never come back for her.

  • I ADORE this adaptation. Can I ask where you go this from? I want to watch it in full again so much.

    Thanks for uploading!

  • so sad!

  • it almost feels like its real.

  • omg i cried so much, how did she die, its so sad when he cries, eddie is an amazing actor

  • she gets hung for killing alec

  • @emmajd1 I woulda killed the bastard myself as I may my first >:). bastard WRECKED my body, health and life.

  • Makes me wanna cry...

  • I hate this part!!

    It's to sad.

i want her to be happy!!

  • Does anyone know what song is playing at the end...the one she keep signing?

  • I search for that song too ^^

  • Alrewyrn - its called The Snow it melts the soonest

  • I cried :(

    they fit so well together..

  • alec D'Uberville is the man she kills

  • This is one of the most beautiful and moving books I've ever read. And this scene made me cry excessively.

    So beautiful.

  • what happened, can someone tell why she's not with Angel at the end?

  • she is executed for killing the D'Uberville guy - can't remember his name. she tells Angel to marry her sister instead.

  • thanks! I think he won't ever love someone as he loved Tess!

  • you can tell by the black flag that's raised, but it's quite hard to see. :'(

  • thanks but it hard to see, i see a flag that is maybe black ^^

  • The flag is black to signify Tess' death.

  • such a good production.

gemma arterton really did a stunning job on acting such a heavy part

  • where's the psrt where Tess makes Angel promise to take Liza-Lu as a wife after she has gone?

  • That happens right before this scene.

  • D: Why did it have to end like this?!

  • This is so heartbreaking :( *sniff sniff*
