@usnate1 How is it humiliating to them if they played in short shorts their entire career? lol they'd probably feel way more ridiculous wearing today's clownish quilt sized XXXL shorts - and remember this is 1984, so NOBODY with a basketball had even heard of longer shorts. I'm 25 and I play in rec leagues and even I think today's shorts look and feel a bit ridiculous, the mid 90's killed bball uniform style. They should at least bring back the '92 shorts so players don't so much like clowns
@dantheman9758 I agree the 90's shorts were the best of both worlds....but you have to admit that a man in his late 50's in short shorts only inspires me to hop on the treadmill...c'mon? I'm 29 and I play in just above if not at knee level shorts....the allen iverson era looked fuckin stupid though ya know, they looked liked skirts they were so baggy....it looked stupid too...the short shorts were better than those.
@uberathlete Lol, they sorta do play this - it's the celebrity game, Dominique Wilkins played in it... it isn't the same when Justin Bieber is also on the team though... It should just be past NBA superstars lol
Judge if you want to but even at their age at the time of this video if Rick Barry , the Big O, Nate , Pistol Pete, and throw me in, took the court on any play ground in America we'd have held court from NY to Oakland CA. NBA players even at the age they were in this post would win every time against any five play ground players. If you don't know that you never played against a pro.
If they brought the NBA ALL STAR LEGENDS GAME back, my dream lineup would be: WESTERN CONFERENCE: Hakeem Olajuwon Karl Malone David Robinson Mitch Richmond John Stockton EASTERN CONFERENCE: Patrick Ewing Alonzo Mourning Scottie Pippen Michael Jordan Muggsy Bogues
We actually had this game on videotape. This was the same year they brought back the dunk contest (Larry Nance defeated Dr. J). Yeah, some of the guys were a bit "elderly", but SOME of these guys definitely showed glimpses of their past greatness: Havlicek, Earl the Pearl, the Hawk, Pistol Pete, even Nate Thurmond. This was where I first saw the pecularities of the Big O's and Rick Barry's free throw shots. Peculiar but VERY ACCURATE!!!!
Interesting that there's guys who only retired 3-4 years earlier (Barry, Monroe, Unseld) mixing it up with guys who'd retired 15 years earlier. Great to see some footage of these games, I'd only seen a few seconds' worth before.
I also think they should do thid now. Im sure players like Kevin Willis, Chris Webber, The Barry Brothers (Jon and Brent), Kenny Smith and Steve Smith would love to do it. Maybe Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Steve Kerr could do too. I 'ont know about Charles Barkley.
Thats because he would've been in the best shape. Think about it, the man was offered a contract by the New Jersey Nets long after he retired. I think Wilt could've played 20 plus years if he wanted too. But he had other interest.
Kind of amazing those guys used to be that good. Still, Pistol Pete was playing 5 years earlier and actually got close to the finals when played with the Celtics that one year in 1979 with a rookie Larry Bird.
That would of been great and he would have been a great 6th man that year. Don't forget a year earlier in 1978 that the Celtic were bad. Then when Larry Bird played, his rookie he took them to the Conference finals and lost in 7 games.
Both David Thompson and Norm Nixon blew out knees in these games which is why the stopped it. Some of the games shows Bobby Jones, Iceman, Calvin Murphey and such to be in great shape. I would like to see it brought back played on by guys who stay in shape like Hakeem to reduce the risk of injury!
The very concept of an old timer all stars is funny but borderline evil. You shove these retired player into the lime light to be a shadow of their former selves, a testament what the aging process does to you. The guys had long careers, countless injuries, they are unfit but still have the competitive fire... That will result into a endless string of new injuries, or aggravated old injuries. what a brain fart.
They cancelled this event after David Thompson ripped his knee to shreds while trying to show that he could still jump like the old days. Decided it was kinda depresssin watching former world class athletes waddling around injuring themselves.
I believe they quit doing this game the year David Thompson tore his knee... too bad because it was kind of fun seeing these guys play one more time. It's probably the same reason (liability) they don't do the baseball old-timers games anymore.
maybe they should bring it back, i'd love to see old timers play again, although i've never seen a game before. Maybe they should force them to wear knee braces.
@crestmere This was a bad idea. Just think about it. Here you have guys who retired from competitive basketball because their body could not handle it anymore. They are couple of years older and poorly conditioned. However, they are still intensely competitive and it's a televised game. All the ingredients for these guys to go out and get hurt. Which of course is exactly what happened.
@crestmere Bad idea no way. Fans the same age who play in 50 + leagues can relate. How ever old you are now if you're just sittin around on a couch makin fun of people out there still active and playing having fun living life instead of watching it, don't judge because you aren't in any position to do it in from a chair in front of a LCD. you do have an LCD or is your screen as lame as opinion.
