  • I miss those days too. People knew grammar and sentence structure too!

  • Now that is how a real little boy does, wiping the fish off on his pants. I wish they'd show these credits on Andy Griffith reruns instead of the still picture or that TV Land has made part of their crappy closings on the bottom of the screen with half-second flashes of cast names, etc.

  • thats real

  • woaah i did not know that they ended like that. i've never seen that. in all my 8 seasons they just end it with a blue screen or in black and white with a little picture of a tree or something in the bottom corner

  • thanks for making this. i needed it for a school project!

  • Man, I miss those days!

  • ahhhhh...... This is when America was America. How I miss these days.

  • I love the whislez!!! <3 :D

  • The whistle was done by the theme's co-composer, the late Earle Hagen. A great piece of music.

  • @cag1970 yes, that's the same one who also did music for M*A*S*H, The Dukes of Hazzard and Gunsmoke

  • Don Knotts left the show in season 5. Why did his name is on the credits?

  • It was one of the episodes in which Knotts returned as a guest star.

  • and I think he won his emmy awards (or at least one of them) for his guest shots on the show too.

  • This was the episode "The Legend of Barney Fife",

  • @mullethead201

He made three guest appearances in seasons six, seven and the final season eight. This was probably from his season six appearance as Jack Burns, who played Warren the deputy who replaced Barney, is also listed. His charcter did not work out and he only appeared in eleven episodes in season six.

  • @Superbatfan @mullethead201 Yes, Superbatfan, you are correct. These are the credits from the episode entitled "The Legend of Barney Fife". It's a shame that CBS, which otherwise presented the episodes on DVD as they were originally broadcast, failed to include this original version of the credits on the DVDs. Even if they were unable to present them for every episode, it would have been nice if they could have presented an example of them as a bonus feature. Thanks to retronaut for sharing!

  • Also, an unusual change was made...these original credits show the copyright date as 1966, but the "blue background" version shown on the DVDs shows the copyright date as 1965. As Andy would say...."curious, curious..."!

  • So this was how they originally ended in prime-time, and the blue background was tacked onto CBS daytime and syndication prints? Cool, I never was quite clear on that. I did know that the reruns were originally known as "Andy of Mayberry", and I think I've seen at least 1 of those that slipped into syndication. I've also seen this closing with the alternate music maybe once, and thought the music was a bit off-key and weird sounding.

  • Classic!

  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I thought I remembered a closing like this!!! Now I know I'm not crazy! Again....THANK YOU!!!

  • The Black And White episodes originally ended this way too, but with a sponsor logo in lower right corner.

  • I saw that same logo in the right hand corner.

No, you CANNOT figure out my age, but have a Happy New Year, LOL.

  • Some of the syndicated color episodes shown in the late 70's had this original ending, and others had the blue background/artworks version - it seemed to alternate. This one is great, thanks for posting it. I also remember an alternate music arrangement for the '67-68 season closing with this visual. There were a few alternative musical arrangements for the closing during the '60-68series CBS run. Maybe for the 50th anniversary in 2010 they will be shown on TVLand or available on DVD.

  • I would say that THEY definately need to restore the original end credits to all the episodes, because , ALL of the episodes, color, AND black and white originally ended this way

  • This was posted in original aspect ratio, but yesterday (Nov. 24), YouTube changed to wide screen as the default for all playback.

  • The You Tube is in wide screen too. I wathched this for Viacom also. That is probably it says "Orignal color closing credits" even though this is probably letter boxed or in wide screen. I do not like wide screen.

  • No Viacom logo of any kind at the end of this clip.

  • I never saw this version of the closing theme before..Thanks for posting.

  • In CBS daytime and syndicated prints, the series used "standard" closing credits (with a drawing of Mayberry's main street in the lower right-hand corner where the General Foods logo would appear}, and a full version of the series' theme. Most people have forgotten that the network version ended this way...how this slipped into syndication, I have no idea. This is from the episode "The Legend Of Barney Fife" [1/17/66], which was one of Jack Burns' final appearances as "Deputy Warren Ferguson".

  • all i can imagine is the GF logo or one of many brands at the bottom right corner..thanks
