Gosh, brings back so many memories when I first heard him to do a live broadcast on BBC R3 in the early 80s; 1st half Albeniz, 2nd half Barrios. The Fleta, the vinyl Barrios album and that lump on his hand which thankfully he managed to get removed to no ill effect.
"God has laid a finger on his brow, and it will not be long before his name becomes a byword abroad". Those were Andres Segovia’s words when he first met then 11 - year old John Williams.
2011 or 1900, if you play bum notes you play bum notes, my comments and opinions of the piece are no less valid than yours and I reserve the right to be as critical as I wish. The point about Heifetz is true of what some say about Denis Azabagic version of the first two, movements of this piece, on that point we can agree.
@sbooder After listening to this and the Azabagic version one after another I can say that I enjoy Williams' first two movements more. I like his tone, and also the forcefulness he plays this piece with. I agree that Azabagic has the piece down better and even seems more technically proficient... very apparent in the allegro.
Personally I'll keep listening to this. I'd also listen to Heifetz endlessly vibrato a handful of notes all day long. To each their own.
For me Denis Azabagic interpretation is far superior, I find JW's version emotionless and too slow, he plays wrong notes and is too staccato. This of course is my own opinion, and I would not expect others to agree.
@sbooder I wasn't disputing that he played notes he was "not supposed to play"... I was pointing out that there isn't exactly such a thing. It's 2011, not 1900. And btw, I actually prefer how staccato it was throughout all three movements.
I feel like people are overly critical sometimes. Like when people say Heifetz played certain pieces too fast and with too much vibrato. Share the helpful part of your opinion. Save the rest for someday when someone actually asks you.
I went to many of his concerts in the 60's and 70's and they were all phenomenal. The Sky episode damaged his playing a lot in my opinion. And why does he play those awful guitars that sound like they are strung with elastic bands. What is wrong with the wonderful Spanish guitars he used to play? Like the Fleta in this recording.
@noelwilde The new Australian style of guitar projects more sound forward and they don't loose quality when played louder. Most guitarists agree that tone quality is sacrificed for the bigger volume but luthiers are making alot of progress and are trying to get the best of both worlds. A few more decades and the elastic band sound should be history!
So why does he use an amplifier in large halls where he could be heard quite clearly pre 'Australian Guitar' in those same halls? Another 20 years of elastic band sounding instruments should be confined to the laboratory. It's the old 'Emperor's new clothes' syndrome I'm afraid. If Maestro Williams starting playing a ukulele many would follow suit. Stick with the Spaniards, they've been making them for more than a " few more decades".

i think i've seen better interpretations of the third part from amateurs. not technically better but more interesting. i think it shoudl be generally faster and more colorful... shinichi fukada in his old video here on YT plays it very very good

i dont know why you were given thumbs down, the guitar absolutely does not have a great range of dynamics. I'm a freaking guitar student too and people just have to come to terms with the limitations of the guitar!

Sure dude.

Yes wrong notes, try reading the music and you will see that there are incorrect notes, not interpretation just plain wrong notes.
