  • Eric and the Raspberries at their live best..Recorded 11/7/73 at the Palace Theater NYC; 5 songs aired on DKRC, but the concert was a 9 song set. You can hear the whole concert at this site and download tracks too! Go to wolfgangsvault com

  • Incredible!

  • prefiero la de motley crue, suena más salvaje y sexi!!!

  • Leaving the Velvet Underground to front the Raspberries was the smartest move Lou Reed ever made.

  • Just listened to Motley Crue version---Raspberries much better --but it's all just opinion and preference.

  • @minnabean33 I do prefer Mötley :D First I knew, and much more emotion in Neil's voice. In fact, I think it's not the same. Carmen seems confident, Vince Neil seems confused in the song.

  • Jim Bonfanti's drumming was cool.

  • "Artie Peeler"

oh yea that's the future joan jett guitar alright. in a perverse "wtf were you thinking dude" way it's really cool that eric carmen passed such a cool guitar on to the "younger generation." (it being a custom-painted/hot-rodded-pickups, one-of-a-kind gibson as a result).

  • here is the set list from Panama City FL, the gig immediately following the famed Carnegie Hall gig 9/26/73 PANAMA CITY, FL (tape trader board tape, VG+ audio) I Wanna Be With You Let's Pretend Ecstasy Tonight Don't Want to Say Goodbye (mellotron and Eric/keyboards section) -- Waiting I Reach for the Light I Can Remember (and awesome mellotron on these two covers--) Loco-Motion Be My Baby Last Dance Makin' It Easy Money Down Drivin' Around Go All The Way Roll Over Beethoven I'm A Rocker
  • "It's too bad the Raspberries couldn't shake the pop band image. They were great performers."

there was no proper "tour circuit" matching act (or venues) for them, the biggest problem. the Side 3 season's lineup (fall 1973) supposedly WoWeD the Carnegie Hall "NYC audience" (including rock critics who reviewed the gig, alan betrock notably, who founded NY Rocker/magazine not long afterwards) -- and the Panama City "board tape" from the very next gig says this (same set) = 100% true x 10.

  • RIP Macho Man

  • Paul Stanley (KISS) cites these guys as a huge influence!

  • I believe the white gibson Eric is playing was sold or givin to Joan Jett in the 70s.

  • @MrHfisher

    Yes,it was

  • @MrHfisher Joanie had a white SG at The Masque Studios on Hollywood Boulevard under the Pussycat Theater in '77... and Artie Peeler was in evidence, so...

  • 15 people have not lived "tonight".

  • Wally goes for it like he ain't got nothin' to lose cuz he is right - an effing a plus song that everyone should know cuz its effin' great...

  • motley crue makes this song!

  • yes being a teenager in cleveland in the late 60's early 70's was something. stop wait and listen circus...only in the 'rock capital of the world' born and raised there. what a previledge. but now. REVEREND NORMAN EDWARD VAIL sees life a little different now. love y'all later

  • Always far more rockin' in person than any of their studio albums. The pride of Cleveland!

  • just listened to the M. Crue version and I don't know whether to laugh or puke !

bloody feckin awful----------guitar tone like eggs frying and cartoon chipmunk vocals

  • The fact that two groups of kids from Cleveland ...The Choir and Cyrus Erie...could literally sound like the Beatles or the Small Faces after becoming The Raspberries demonstrates how powerful and universal the Rock Vibe is. I saw these guys in a bar in Athens Ohio [ Ohio University } along with The James Gang, Frijid Pink, Ramatam, Elvin Bishop. Beer was $2.00 for all you could drink, and the acid was free!!! Those were the daze!!!

  • Most underrated band from the seventies!

  • Raspberries are the most underrated band of the complete seventies, It´s true!

  • Pure Small Faces homage...

  • The Crue version is way better

  • Tommy Lee kicks ass in the Motley Crue cover. Hey, how old do you think the girl was in the song...? Wow, the seventies must've been a wild time.

  • That is the very same guitar Joan Jett played in The Blackhearts, not just the same model, the SAME guitar. So funny...

  • Motley Crue's version is better in my opinion, but i fully respect that there would be no Crue version at all without the original :)

  • Small Faces influence all over this un :)

  • I like it. Not a bad live performance. Go Eric!

  • Staggeringly AWESOME video!

  • what a crap

  • Long way from Cyrus Erie

  • I saw the raspberries in Doss High School's gym in Lou. Ky. in 1974-75. About 40 people showed up but Eric and the band didn't care. They rocked like it sold out.

    That's professional.

  • Hey youngsters! If ya like these cats you wll love Brownsville Station too!

Don't be affraid when you realize that SMOKIN IN THE BOYS ROOM wasn't written by Motley Crue......... and that your parents actually listened to MUCH better music than you have no. Oh an that SELENA GOMEZ song MAGIC...... BLUE SUEDE from the 1970's. Sorry, but thanks for playing, we have some lovely parting gifts & and version of our home game.

  • @WoodyWoodcasters You been Smokin 'On Tne Bous Room Again? YEs, I heard it, have it and most people from the 70's had it. Some now DO NOT! HAH!

  • @WoodyWoodcasters LOL Funny. Maybe Selena Gomez should have sang Smokin in the Boys room. Would look better.

  • Wow, the title might be the same as MC5's song but that's where the comparison ends I'd rather compare Carmen/Bryson to Lennon/McCartney anyday...beautiful ballads, catchy tunes, great performances...

  • try MC5 doing tonite

this is too lame and candy ass

  • @spadge321 they are not trying to be power rock like MC5. This is more about melody and vocal harmony. You can't compare the two, and doing so does both bands injustice. Chill and enjoy those harmonies.

  • they are like a cross between the bay city rollers and the faces,,

    shame

good hair cuts but lame balls,,

  • i love both versions of this song. they're a little different style, probly bc mick has an edge to his guitar, but both are great. they were great.

  • Raspberries old footage, the best, thahnk you for reccomendation.

  • The best LIVE band I ever saw. Raw talent and rock and roll

  • trivia ,that guitar (eric carmens melody maker) is the one played by joan jett now, she bought it as the runaways were breaking up still plays it ,the gibson Joan jett signature model is based on that guitar

  • proof once again that MOTLEY CRUE can take a half decent song and make it 100% BETTER than the origional!!!

(their version of Smokin in the boys room blows the Brownsville Station origional away too)

  • @LOWBOYSIXX lol.... they're versions are inferior... worse than that, they had to borrow from the Raspberries and Freaking Brownsville Station (a perennial Bargain bin filling band)

  • GOD BLESS Dave Smalley (bassist on the album - don't know if he was here for this) for service to his country. His helicopter was shot down in Viet Nam and he spent a couple days in the jungle (nursing shrapnel wounds) waiting for rescue...can't imagine what those " 'Nam" vets had to endure when they returned home. THIS is the raspberries song that should have been on genuine mid-70s slice-of-life movies ("Dazed and confused") and TV shows ("Life on Mars", which DID use "Go all the way").

  • I can't believe I am saying this, but Motley made it better.

  • There is surf in Cleveland tonight....and everywhere else that Eric and Raspberries music is still playing.

    Rock on

  • I actually bought Eric carmen a Scotch and Soda at a club "My fathers Place" in Long Island NY in the 70's just before the Rasberries were set to perform....I got there early with a friend he was sitting at the bar. I asked him if I could buy him a drink...he seemed like a really ice guy

  • Never enough Raspberries......

  • Saw 'em live back then ..this vid captures it ...sounded exaclty like this except a hundred times louder, which was great.

  • Brilliant song from brilliant album.

  • absolute classic rock voice.....he should've been bigger!!!

  • Motley Crue covered this in their early days

  • i notice the weirdest things and i have noticed this: if you look at eric carmen at this age and the humorist dave barry when he too was around this age (30ish), they resemble each other. also, they are both awesome.

  • Just remembering all the nookie I got to these songs on the car radio! These guys were the BEST at makeout music then.

  • Quiet Riot was full of dooshbag musicians- 80% of their music were cover songs from the obscure bands of the seventies- what a tool, no wonder they disapeared , their not even a band anymore, and they still suck.

    Raspberries live on.

  • Kevin DuBrow (singer) has passed away, ... and the others went on to other bands, ... Quiet Riot had it's place in music. Not a big fan at all, ... but they came around at the right time for what they did.

  • @sunphuk Agreed!

  • The Raspberries music carries on , Quiet Riot is gone forever .RIP Kevin . No comparison in talent , the berries by a mile

  • It's too bad the Raspberries couldn't shake the pop band image. They were great performers.

But then, Eric by himself is pretty good as well.

  • @iqfrenzy Too many of their songs were wimpy ballads. The rockers were outnumbered.

  • @iqfrenzy Eric Carmen's solo stuff stunk.

  • @iqfrenzy What's so bad about being a "pop" band, eh? Some of the best bands EVER were and are "pop" bands. The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Crickets, Fountains of Wayne, etc. and so on....

  • @haj1909 Why, nothing at all, haj...but that is not what they wanted to be known as...they wanted to be known as bad boy rockers. Most of their music was not the bubblegum heard on the airwaves.

  • total perfection!

  • This sounds very diferent than Motley Crue version

  • The Raspberries drummer was good enough to

replace the drummer for the Who

  • That would be highly debateable. Even though I enjoy BOTH groups

  • joan jett has that guitar now he gave it to her

  • Rare to see a live performance with no lip synching and/or musical synching.

    The best Raspberries song.

    Tie with Overnight Sensation.

  • hmmmmm hi dave

  • I met the Raspberries in Frederick, Maryland in 1973 when they played at a community center!! It was great! After the show they came out to talk and sign autographs, which I still have! I also met Eric, just as he started his solo career, at the Capital Center in Landover, Maryland in 1975. The Raspberries were and are one of the most underrated bands I have ever seen. I will always be a fan!

  • Search for The Raspberries on GrooveSafari (dot) com

  • the cover version isn't in the same league with the original . the crue were a great hair metal band but the rasberries wrote the book on power pop, they were a better band as well imop . erics voice was better and he was a better singer he could hold his voice in key and hold the notes without the need for the metal scream , have i pissed off the crue fans enough ? not my intention

  • You're only speaking the truth. These guys were the real deal.

  • Love this song & Raspberries. Motley Crue did OK with their version but nobody does it better than Eric, yesterday & today!

  • @agoradoll71

im a big motley fan but u r right m8.

  • @agoradoll71 no i think motleys better

  • ya i got to meet eric carmen tonight in cleveland at this bar called johnny's. amazing night

  • He just got sentenced to 30 days in jail. Hope he wasn't driving drunk this night. Too much pleasure given through his music... this hurts.

  • Oh no. I think I need a cool glass of water and some happy music.

Why is everyone in so much pain these days?

    Stay well, EC. Miss ya.

  • Since Eric wrote the song.....he "owns" Vince and Motley Crue... think about it!! As for the whole "creepy" factor....older guys rock and rule!!

  • Motley crue version sassier and sexiest one!!!

  • A-plus pop music that rocks. Nirvana missed out on a fantastic cover version here.

  • I'm 13 again ,but this time I understand!

  • Do you notice all the people who liked motley crues' version are stupid when it comes to spelling

  • I just went to listen to the Motley Crue version of this song - it doesn't come close to the power of Eric and the boys.

It's so sped up, sounds more like Porky Pig doing lead. Rock on, Raspberries.

  • I like the motley crue version better because Vince's higher pitched singing makes it sound like a young kid singing it (I think he was a teen when they recorded Too Fast For Love) so it reminds me of a young kid wanting to score with some chick for a one night stand which is a great subject for a song. In this rapsberries version, it reminds me of a creepy older guy singing about scoring with a little girl o.O

  • Except Vince was probably older than Eric Carmen was on the Raspberries' version. And really, Vince wins most "creepy" awards.

  • Agree

  • Eric was 22 when he recorded this. Eric Carmen...when he was in The Raspberries owned one of Rocks alltime great voices. Vince...ehhhh not so much. As far as you thinking about an old guy scoring with a young chick...well maybe you should go see a shrink and work on your issues.

  • raspberries wunderbar...mates. willkommen

  • This Virshion is good but Motley Crue's is better im sorry i mean i like the 70's but Motley Crue's is good 80's version and plus Vince Neil sings that one really good two so dont talk shit about Motley Crue ok

  • dude you need an education. crue covered this song because it moved them and it helped shaped everything they were about and eric didnt have to go into falsetto to get the high notes like "vince" did + these guys looked cool, they didnt have to dress up to sell themselves. 80s metal has its place but come on man wake up!!!

  • Eric is a natural tenor. He admits to having had no singing lessons!

Yes, I'll market him to everyone I know, and throw in some Raspberries as a bonus. For free.

  • Right on, sister!!

  • R U fucking kiddin me??? The Mötley Crüe version absolutely sucks. They butchered this song BIG TIME!!!

  • i like this but motley crue's version is better but thats just me

  • Amen! (But I'll study up on The Small Faces just to do a comparison, and not tell anybody what I think.)

  • I don't care what anyone thinks or says, I loved the Raspberries and they were great!

  • I don't think Eric is imitating anyone. I have seen him perform since 1972 and he has always been a rocker. He loves the show and loves the Raspberries.

  • I agree. They try to sound too much like the Small Faces. The lead singer does a poor imitation Of Steve Marriot.

  • I Love the Small Faces...The Raspberries best certainly holds up next to The Small Faces best. Carmen does sound like Marriot here...with a bit more range.

  • I think maybe they are more the American "Small Faces" than the Beatles, HOWEVER that is still a huge complement. This particular song is a lot like "SF".

  • I have to admit that Motley Crue turned me on to this song and the Raspberries...I can't decide which I like more (of course Motley is my favorite band) but there is always something special about the original.

  • Brillant as always! The American Beatles?!

  • wtf?

  • one of my favorite bands love their music too bad they couldn't keep it together.

  • They played together just last year!!!!

  • Love this band!! I saw them and got to sit on the stage back when I was a teenager. Great memory.

    Thanks TLPC

  • Very Cool, where was the concert?

  • Cleveland's Playhouse Square State Theater.

  • This band rocks. I found out about them because Mötley Crüe covered this song, "tonight". Nikki Sixx loves them. He's got good taste. Check out the New York Dolls, another good 70s band, if you havent heard them. They are some of the fore fathers of punk. This isnt really punk but its sort of similar to The Dolls. Please comment back and tell me if you like The New York Dolls.

  • me too i found out about em through Motley, Nikki Sixx is god!, and yhh i love the dolls, motley got me into alot of the 70's bands there kickass!

  • cool bro

  • I've listened to NY Dolls before, and like them. I just started to look up the Raspberries and other "power pop" bands. It's actually amazing listening to the dolls now and hearing the pop sensibility in their songs, so similar to these guys! It seems like the only difference between the two is the raunchiness and the cross-dressing :D

  • 《主語なし》Recalling nostalgic, youth era, I was hearing with the needle of a/the sapphire with a desk player.

    The 1970's are good.

  • I wish Eric Carmen had carried on with the Raspberries. Those guys rocked.

  • great great band!

  • Interesting note: the white Gibson guitar that Eric is playing in this video ended up being given to a friend who later passed it on to Joan Jett. It is still her favorite guitar though I think she no longer takes it on road.

  • なつかしい、青春時代を、思い出します、

    卓上プレイヤーでサファイアの針で聞いてました。

    1970年代は、いいね。

  • This song kicks ass! Eric Carmen is awesome!

  • Eric sat right in front of us at the Indians game on Sat. (8/16/08) Still has great hair and it looks even better in an indians visor.

  • great song!! Cleveland Rocks!!

  • That was a powerhouse performance. Great POP, and terrific hairstyle.

  • I love this song too- I first heard it on their compilation CD. Glad to see a good quality video. Truly a hidden power pop gem!

  • I love this song!!!

I live in south Euclid where Eric carmen grew up and went to Brush high school, I believe he was class of '65 or '66. I love the rock history here in Cleveland!!!! Eric Carman is one id like to meet someday!!! I love his music! --Italian Stallion---

  • motley crue redid it and did an awesome job

  • they sure did crue the best band of all time

  • duh motley is the best! i say that in bulletins on myspace all the time to tell my friends about motley

  • I love this song !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of the all-time best rock and roll songs done by one of the best all-time rock and roll bands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • That kicks butt! Ohio bands rule, and this was one of it's finest.

  • Kick ASS performance! I remember the album was a die-cut jacket shaped like a bowl of Raspberries... SIDE 3 was the title of teh album this song was on. Good times in the 70's!

  • yes! the vinyll...

  • Excellent footage, thanks!

  • I was looking for KGB FM and came across some unbelievable harmonies and poundy rock and roll and the song totally threw me for a loop. Man I hope I can find their music somewhere. Thought 70's music sucked, I feel like an ass. Now I'm looking for these guys. Crazy, I'm hunting up every classic rock station I can find man!

  • Eric Carmen is flawless! He can do no wrong!..Just Brilliant!

  • That's a yearning. Man you dropped me off the deep end in my highschool days!!!

    Thanks Eric!!!

  • I believe the guitar eric is playing is an Ibanez Artist.

  • No, Eric is playing a 1965 Gibson Melody Maker that was completely overhauled: white paint job and new pickups (Gibson humbuckers with the brand name embossed).

  • crue did a better job but these dudes are cooll too i love them

  • i can honestly say it is one of the first times someone covering a song did a better job then the original.

  • Those crappy 80's hairmetal bands really fucked up some great 70's songs. You've got this one, Once Bitten Twice Shy, Cum on Feel the Noize, Mama We're All Crazee Now, just to name a few. The cover versions suck compared to the originals.

  • Both versions were just as great. The 80's Hair Metal was great. Cum On Feeñl The Noize was an instanyt classic for Quiet Riot.

  • drnrg31, Cum On Feel The Noize was a classic ten years before Quite Riot covered it.

  • I knew it was an original, but did it also go to #1 like Quiet Riot?

  • Yes, in the UK and everywhere else in the world except the US.

  • This song was covered by Motley Crue

  • If you can catch these guys when they are out and about the original group is back together and sounding better than ever they just put out a live at the L A House of Blues 2cd set with a bonus dvd

  • overnight sensation anyone

  • I'd love to see that video

  • Me too...one of my favourite songs of all time

  • Overnight Sensation is my favorite too!

  • Eric Carmen's finest moment...Classic powerpop...well i know it sounds funny...But I'm not in it for the money...Not only classic powerpop...but in my top ten of all time...x

  • They make "menopausal" women find the ol' hormones again...ROCK!!!

  • Great group for the times. Talented musicians and singers but Carmen becuase he sang lead and wrote most of teh songs, thought that he was the whole group and later went solo.

  • for 'Yoshi- yes that is a Melody Maker- highly, highly modified including humbucker pick-ups insatlled later. Probably mid-sixties model. Check out lots of Joan Jett videos for almost the same guitar that she used forever. Same kind of deal with hers...You can see Erics guitar even more modified if they repost the 2 song video Raspberries did in the in the studio. It really rocks!! I hope it gets reposted- it really does them justice!!

  • I believe that I read somewhere that it is actually the same guitar that EC actually gave to her? Maybe I am hallucinating? LOL

  • can anyone settle a debate between me and another raspberries fanatics-

is eric carman at all latino ?

  • I don't think so.

  • fwiw Carmen is a Spanish name... you may have heard of an Opera called 'Carmen' which is set in Seville, Spain.

  • killer song!

can anyone tell if that is a Gibson MelodyMaker? (the white one)

  • well i don't think it is

  • This is great to hear again. If anyone has more to post please do.

  • Eric Carmen is one of the most overlooked musicians in the industry. I think he rates right up there with the best of the best. I love the Raspberries.

  • This is the first time i have seen this song obviously i know Eric Carmen from 'Hungray Eyes' but never knew he was in a band its very good pure Rock and Roll. Is there a best of The Raspberries?

  • There are best of Raspberries.I bought one on Amazon

  • Yes there is a "Best of the Raspberries"! Look for it on Amazon. This song hit #69 in 1973. Eric Carmen also wrote some major Top 10 hits for Shaun Cassidy, "Hey Deanie" and "That's Rock & Roll," both of which Eric also recorded himself. Even bigger than the 2 Dirty Dancing songs, his biggest hit was "All By Myself," which Celine Dion took to #4 in 1998, but Eric's original hit #2 in 1976! My personal favorite of his is "She Did It" from 1977, which just got posted here. :~)

  • Just saw Eric and the guys in Cleveland last nite...WHAT A GREAT SHOW!...UNBELIEVABLE ENERGY!!!!
