@hotrita814 - So sorry for the late reply! (been sick) Anything will work, but the stuff I used in this video was upholstery thread. I don't see why yarn beading thread wouldn't give you brilliant results, too.Just experiment with tension to see how tight you can pull before it snaps.
@darlingmama09 - It was dreamed up, and dreams are crazy. But I never liked the lazy latch-knot tutu experience; those end up flat and boring. To each his own.
Thanks so much! Great tutorial! I am going to try one for my grand daughter... by the way if that is you in the photos in the end you have a smokin hot body and you should flaunt it! :)
@KawiLover250 - Yes, I hear that a lot. You'll find with this video a response in which I go step by step in real time. Well, almost real time; I think it's much slower when I'm not crooning Linkin Park songs during the process.
I am getting ready to make my first tutu. I am so excited but however I am worried mine would be too thin. I was hoping for a classical style tutu but I am also worried that it will be too long since I am short. Lots of worrying ;p. How do you make sure it is "thick" enough ? Do you just keep tying it over and over or tie 3 pieces of tulle at a time ? or etc. If you could let me know , that would be wonderful. Awesome tutu by the way ( at the end ).
@BreOfficialChannel - If you need it to be thicker, you can do two full waist-lengths of tying, then sew them both into a ribbon. You'll have two layers but not two tiers; they'll fall the same length. To modify how short it falls, wrap the ribbon around your waist where you'll want the tutu to sit, then measure down from that line how low you want it to fall.
@EnnnBee - It IS complicated. Most people opt for the 'loop and pull' method when doing no-sew, but I hate sacrificing skirt bulk for waist bulk that comes from the tulle bunching up at the top.
@CMeilach - I use a few different terms- strips, patches, chunks... The main pieces that make up the tutu are rectangles. The measurements are up to you, but my strips are 4"x6". Basically, a shorter edge gets gathered into the knot.
i am at my mom's and she has no sound on her puter. soo i was wondering if you or someone could tell me how wide the strips are that you tie into the skirt? i know how long is up to me, just wondering how wide. thank you :D
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I'll start making one tomorrow for my ten year old. But, I must say, you wear it so, well you're tempting me into making one for myself. Again, thanks for everything.
@sunsolseven - (gasp!) YES! Another convert! I admit, it's a real head-turner, and you really have to own your confidence to get away with it, but then again, my hair is five colors right now, so I may be biased.
Started weird, ended lovely, I can see doing this at the tail of a skirt. A mini is to trampy. But if you are in the ballet, you ready to knock them dead. Thanks for sharing. Again, finish was lovely.
@EGYPTQUILTS1 - A mini is a bit tasteless, but worn with real leggings, skinnies, or cropped pants works well; otherwise you're in for a whole lot of buttcheek. I didn't even know it would work once I started, so the finish was a surprise to me, too!
wait so how would to make a tutu stick out ? like the tutu at 4:45 ? would it be the same process you showed us? just cut the tulle shorter? or? cus i prefer the ones that stick out like at 3:33
@123janetxo - You're looking for a solid pancake tutu, which is serious work, because it requires pleating, a wire hoop, and LOTS of hand tacking. Mine only sticks out the way you see it in the final photos; the closest thing to pancake would be adding a tied layer of nylon net or mesh cut really short underneath your main layer.
@bigtimeblasian - Essentially, yes... There's a response to that video called 'Tuck-and-Tie Step-by-Step' which shows you exactly how I did it and in real time.
@bigtimeblasian - I don't know, actually. It would depend on the stretch yield you apply (how tight you tie the elastic). To compensate for oversize, I've of late been sewing the tied tulle onto a jersey waistband with extra fabric above the tulle line, then sewn it down to create a casing for a length of elastic for a more versatile fit: either low on the hips or high on the waist.
@KawaiiCutiePie - This is the newer video I've uploaded called "The Pleated TutuSkirt". You can do it the same way. Make a rather wide waistband with an elastic casing on the top edge. Tie the tulle the length of your hips, then sew it to the lower edge of the waistband. Insert your elastic, sew the casing closed, and it should be a little more wearable.
@krystandsteven - I used upholstery thread, I think... At some other points in time, I've used kite string, yarn, and ribbon. Almost anything will do, as long as it's strong, sturdy, and won't come loose from itself.
I'm portuguese and because the video is so fast I have a hard time following, and I'm fluent in english! Anyway props for the creator...awesome job =P
This tutu is so beatiful. But unfortunately i don´t understand some of that parts. I mean I am not from english speaking countries. Can you explain me what do you say about tutu from 2:10 to 2:50? I´d like to have fluffy tutu like is at the end of your video. Thank you
@LLooLLooStAr - Yeah, it works pretty well for 80s. I would suggest trying longer cuts of tulle, like 10 inches so you can have a little drag. My other video, the Tutu Skirt Tute, is much more in the retro realm.
I love this video! i'm trying to make like a petticoat to go underneath my costume!! i was thinking if i want more of a poop down like up around, can i do like one layer short and one longer so it looks more like a petticoat? thank you thank you!
@SoL2505 - It could work that way, but I would suggest making the second layer the same length, then, instead of sewing it to a waistband, sew it to a length of costume satin (maybe 4 inches wide) so it will swish beneath the top layer. Then, sew the top of the costume satin to the top tutu tier so you'll have two distinct layers.
I made my daughter a Blue, Black, White, and Periwinkle tutu for this year's Halloween costume. It is amazing I have been complemented several times on it. This is so easy and believe it or not it was fun! thanks for showing how to make your stellar tutu! bring us more to make! oh i should also note that I am in no way Suzie Homemaker, not really a creative bone in my body but this worked out really well.
@ericancerna - I'm so glad you like it! It's really awesome to have been able to share this around the world and further the idea that if you can tie your shoes, you can make a custom fit tutu. If I come up with anything else, you can bet I'll post it.
Otay. Amazing video i will say .. but i wont to make a hot pink and black tutu becuase i wont to be a emo farie aand i tryed making the tutu but i cant get it right!! it wont go fluffy!!! should i put a bottem layer on it ? so the hot pink is at the bottem and is longer then the black one thats at da top?
@raeanneskittels1 - You can do two layers, yes. That's how I made a camo-scheme tutu. It will fluff out a bit more. The actual fluff comes from having a rather thick chunk of tulle tied into a very small space so the rest has no place to go but wild. Adding a second layer will push the first layer up.
@RozieeRawrr - Oh no!!! I do believe I failed to mention at the beginning of the video that this concept came to me in a dream, so I guess my dream can't come true for everyone, huh? I do make custom tutus, so if you'd like to buy one, we can arrange it.
@SuperLillylu - The second video response is live, but some people just won't understand unless they're right in front of me :( Also, sorry you don't like the music, it's not the best song I've ever written.
@Mrstater20 ..... i sooooo agree with u. i make no sew tutu's as well but not this way ofcourse so i watched hoping to learn a new method and instead i wracked my brain to exhaustion trying to keep up lol.
Thank you for this great tutorial! I was able to make two fantastic floofalicious tutus for my best friend and myself to wear to a music festival in NYC and they came out perfectly!
Your tutu came out very much in a pancake style (think ballerina,I have a few from former ballet recitals).I love tutus, your method is very simple too.Personally,I like the romantic style.Either way,it looks good and very simple for people without sewing skill or want a quick project. :)
@3oiioii - It all depends on your waist measurements, how long you want it, and how floofilicious you want it. I average about 8 strips per bare inch, and at 10 inches off the spool, that's a little more than two yards. As far as off the bolt, that's a whole different set of measurements.
ok so im going to a lady gaga concert and i need to make a clown collar sort of thing for my neck . . . do you think this tutu method would work for that ? i need it to be just as fluffy if not more than the one you made in this video .
@ERiiC315 - Absolutely. In fact, for optimal floof, I'd suggest doing two or more strands of this method and then tying them together at 2" intervals to boost the volume.
@khayotikk ---> ok i just finished it and it come out great . i actually only did the one strand because i just read your response now but it still came out HUGE . its awesome . i also alternated with different shades of tulle and net so it looks awesome . thank you so much .
@chynxx - Just grab a pair of scissors, and one-by-one, choose some strips to get the ax. Cut them off about 1/4 inch below the tie-line so you won't loosen the knots. Keep doing this until you get down to the desired fullness, and use the leftover pieces to make a bracelet or a crown :)
i have a dance recital at the end of the month, my outfit didnt come with a tutu and we dont have time to order a new one expected to be here by the day of the recital. So im forced to resort to making my own, or spend 30$ on a pre made one
@TheBallerinadiaries Yup, she said walmart. I get tulle at the fabric store because I didn't know they sold it at walmart (Too bad they took out the fabric section at my store) at the joann fabrics its about $2.50 a roll
You talk to fast, I can't follow you. Maybe you should consider that people around the world that don't speak English so well would like to follow your advices, but it's difficult at this speed...
@Codita25 - I understand. I plan on doing 'in motion' videos now so even if I don't explain things completely or at a good speed, it's still easier to see what's going on.
@zestydidra - This string is green twine, I think. I found it around the house someplace. It's kind of like the double-thickness of quilting thread. You can also try kite string, yarn, hemp cord; stuff like that. As long as it can withstand constant tugging and general wear from being rubbed against itself.
@zomfgifoundnemo - YES! Okay, I have made two that have dual layers, and it's easiest to describe this way: Tuck and tie the first layer as you want it to look. Then make the second layer the way you'd like it, and other layers, although it gets pretty bulky after that. Then, lay the two tiers one on top of the other and use short pieces of the same tying string you used for the border to sort of tack the two tiers together at about 2-3 inch increments. Then wear it or sew the waistband on!
@twilightluver234 - Anywhere, almost! Dollar stores carry it in the bridal or party area, Walmart sells it in the celebration aisle. iParty sells it (I think it's better than Wally's because it's a bit stiffer). Fabric stores sell it by the bolt or by the roll.
Thanks the best tutorial so far! i will be doing this for my daughter first birthday! ! ! "i cant seem to find one that fits her and i loved your design"
i can't get over how brilliant you are. and so fun! unfortunately, English is not my first language, so i really have to concentrate to understand everything you say, but it's so worth it. totally going out to get tulle now.
It's doable. I would use the Sew Only method to eliminate as many gaps in the fabric. You'll still have some gaps, but the overlapped layers will hide them. Once you get past 10 inches, the tulle begins to fall a little more skirt-like. @IvanLocC1
Depends once again on what kind of material you're working with, but if you're buying off the bolt, I'd say you should be fine with about four yards of each color... striped tutu, right?
I was wanting to make a tutu for myself with black and yellow tulle. I want mine incredibly poofy, I seen some that said they use 50-60 yds. Would that be too difficult?
If you mean by the spool, you're good. But if you mean by the bolt, wowsers, that's a frkkn lot. By the bolt, I wouldn't go more than 13 yards for a rather floofalicious tutu, and if you want it supremely bajongo, perhaps 15-17 yards... but woohoo, what an undertaking.
You may be referring to a different method of tutuism.
Making a Hot pink and black one for my daughter's first birthday, her them is a hotpink/black zebra, so it is going to be AWESOME!!!! I love your idea though!! =)
If you use longer pieces and don't squish the pieces so close together it will lay a little flatter. BUT... I found that it would go in between my legs when I walked and it stretched out the fabric and it went all stringy. Im not a BIG girl and it got caught in between the thighs.
Yeah, I can understand that predicament. The best way to do it is with a tier that's sewn (either by hand or machine) made up of a long row of tulle folded into halves. It's highlighted in my 'Sew Only Tutu' vid. One of these days, I'll post the tutu that lays flat on your lap.
(Super Late) The opening song is called The Only One, by me (smile smile) and it's the Techno Remix. The full version is in a photo montage I never uploaded. :)
(Super Late) The opening song is called The Only One, by me (smile smile) and it's the Techno Remix. The full version is in a photo montage I never uploaded. :)
i really like this method.. much more than the other ones i've seen. ..its better having patience making the tutu, than following a "quick&easy" method and making it look crappy :D
Thanks! I was actually just running out of white... so sad, huh? The purple was a fluke, too. I'm pretty sure the darker purple streaks are 9" circles of tulle from a bridal shower.... Necessity is the mother of invention.
Eh, possibly, but it's still hard to catch both sides of the tape with the volume of tulle trying to escape... I've tried it with ribbon binding also.
thank you so much for this video i cant stand spending 120 dollars to 200 dollars on one tutu for one preformance so far ive made 3 tutus and shared this technique with all of my ballerina friends all thought i do have to decorate more i love this idea
I think it's really awesome that not only trend-setters and costume-wanters are using this tute, but performers, too. That makes me really proud! Thanks for the comment, and I'd love to see your tutus!

Your tutu came out very much in a pancake style (think ballerina,I have a few from former ballet recitals).I love tutus, your method is very simple too.Personally,I like the romantic style.Either way,it looks good and very simple for people without sewing skill or want a quick project. :)

Thank you so much for this video! You are too funny and you made me smile! (which after 5 days with a sick, screaming 10 week old, I needed!)
SFIKE1 1 year ago
on average how much tulle would u sya you need for this?
3oiioii 1 year ago
@3oiioii - It all depends on your waist measurements, how long you want it, and how floofilicious you want it. I average about 8 strips per bare inch, and at 10 inches off the spool, that's a little more than two yards. As far as off the bolt, that's a whole different set of measurements.

Hi did you upload the live version of this video?
Thanks!
MischievousKP 1 year ago
ok so im going to a lady gaga concert and i need to make a clown collar sort of thing for my neck . . . do you think this tutu method would work for that ? i need it to be just as fluffy if not more than the one you made in this video .
ERiiC315 1 year ago
@ERiiC315 - Absolutely. In fact, for optimal floof, I'd suggest doing two or more strands of this method and then tying them together at 2" intervals to boost the volume.
khayotikk 1 year ago
@khayotikk ---> ok i just finished it and it come out great . i actually only did the one strand because i just read your response now but it still came out HUGE . its awesome . i also alternated with different shades of tulle and net so it looks awesome . thank you so much .
ERiiC315 1 year ago
AH!!! It's so FLUFFY!!!!! I have to make one using this version! =]

Omg i needdd hheelllppp lmaoo... I made a tutu nd it came out ok but 1 problem.. Its waaayyyy 2poofy! How do i fix it? Lol
chynxx 1 year ago
@chynxx - Just grab a pair of scissors, and one-by-one, choose some strips to get the ax. Cut them off about 1/4 inch below the tie-line so you won't loosen the knots. Keep doing this until you get down to the desired fullness, and use the leftover pieces to make a bracelet or a crown :)
khayotikk 1 year ago
thats gonna take forever
dpknew1000 1 year ago
@dpknew1000 - It does seem to take forever... but by the time you get used to the method, you can tie somewhere between 5 and 7 inches per hour.
khayotikk 1 year ago
I DIDNT EVEN GET IT. IT WOULD HAV BEEN BETTER IF U DID A LIVE TUTTORIAL INSTEAD.

how much was the tulle at "ball glart"?
walmart right?
i have a dance recital at the end of the month, my outfit didnt come with a tutu and we dont have time to order a new one expected to be here by the day of the recital. So im forced to resort to making my own, or spend 30$ on a pre made one
TheBallerinadiaries 1 year ago
@TheBallerinadiaries Yup, she said walmart. I get tulle at the fabric store because I didn't know they sold it at walmart (Too bad they took out the fabric section at my store) at the joann fabrics its about $2.50 a roll

You talk to fast, I can't follow you. Maybe you should consider that people around the world that don't speak English so well would like to follow your advices, but it's difficult at this speed...
Codita25 1 year ago
@Codita25 - I understand. I plan on doing 'in motion' videos now so even if I don't explain things completely or at a good speed, it's still easier to see what's going on.

Where did you buy the string? or what type of string did you use or what is it called?
zestydidra 1 year ago
@zestydidra - This string is green twine, I think. I found it around the house someplace. It's kind of like the double-thickness of quilting thread. You can also try kite string, yarn, hemp cord; stuff like that. As long as it can withstand constant tugging and general wear from being rubbed against itself.

i soooo want a tutu 2 wear 2 skewl so my mom is making me one that has rainbow colours! i cant wait! thanx for the tutorial.
bellatrixmakowski 1 year ago
@zomfgifoundnemo - YES! Okay, I have made two that have dual layers, and it's easiest to describe this way: Tuck and tie the first layer as you want it to look. Then make the second layer the way you'd like it, and other layers, although it gets pretty bulky after that. Then, lay the two tiers one on top of the other and use short pieces of the same tying string you used for the border to sort of tack the two tiers together at about 2-3 inch increments. Then wear it or sew the waistband on!

Where could you buy some tulle??
twilightluver234 1 year ago
@twilightluver234 - Anywhere, almost! Dollar stores carry it in the bridal or party area, Walmart sells it in the celebration aisle. iParty sells it (I think it's better than Wally's because it's a bit stiffer). Fabric stores sell it by the bolt or by the roll.

What happens if i want to make the tut tu longer ?
As in i want it full length from my waist down to the ground.
IvanLocC1 1 year ago
It's doable. I would use the Sew Only method to eliminate as many gaps in the fabric. You'll still have some gaps, but the overlapped layers will hide them. Once you get past 10 inches, the tulle begins to fall a little more skirt-like. @IvanLocC1

i want 2 make a poofy tutu usin dark pink nd black how many yards would i need for a size 34 waist?
chynxx 1 year ago
Depends once again on what kind of material you're working with, but if you're buying off the bolt, I'd say you should be fine with about four yards of each color... striped tutu, right?
khayotikk 1 year ago
ter really cool,,,but im confused...
grace15ification 2 years ago
I know what you mean... I have yet to sit down and make a motion picture play-by-play of tying close-up, but I will. :)
khayotikk 2 years ago
I was wanting to make a tutu for myself with black and yellow tulle. I want mine incredibly poofy, I seen some that said they use 50-60 yds. Would that be too difficult?
crystaldjacks 1 year ago
If you mean by the spool, you're good. But if you mean by the bolt, wowsers, that's a frkkn lot. By the bolt, I wouldn't go more than 13 yards for a rather floofalicious tutu, and if you want it supremely bajongo, perhaps 15-17 yards... but woohoo, what an undertaking.
You may be referring to a different method of tutuism.

U GO GIRL THAT WAS 2 CUTE
tglashen 2 years ago
IS is possible to make this so it goes more "flat" along your leg instead out sticking out?
warcraftgirl 2 years ago
If you use longer pieces and don't squish the pieces so close together it will lay a little flatter. BUT... I found that it would go in between my legs when I walked and it stretched out the fabric and it went all stringy. Im not a BIG girl and it got caught in between the thighs.
BlaireJanes 2 years ago
Yeah, I can understand that predicament. The best way to do it is with a tier that's sewn (either by hand or machine) made up of a long row of tulle folded into halves. It's highlighted in my 'Sew Only Tutu' vid. One of these days, I'll post the tutu that lays flat on your lap.

Thanks! I was actually just running out of white... so sad, huh? The purple was a fluke, too. I'm pretty sure the darker purple streaks are 9" circles of tulle from a bridal shower.... Necessity is the mother of invention.

double fold bias tape might be a little easier than ribbon....
rhdreams 2 years ago
Eh, possibly, but it's still hard to catch both sides of the tape with the volume of tulle trying to escape... I've tried it with ribbon binding also.
