I believe that the werewolf that is featured with Nathan is because of the common belief that werewolves are immune to aging and most physical diseases due to their constant regeneration of their physical tissue. They can therefore be somewhat immortal. Nathan can be injured by physical means (slapping, hitting, etc), and it still hurts when he is murdered/killed. He first has to die to be reborn.
@lydmantheincredible I think you're, or your dad, rather, is right. I think it's referring to the phrase "keep the wolf from your door" and, of course, is meant to be symbolic but still vague enough to keep people guessing just a little until the end.
Anyone else under the impression they changed Nathan's super power when the actor decided to quit? It seemed to me from this opening it was definitely hinting at something else.

I think they did the wolf-thing in the opening to keep Nathan's power secret. It's just linked with his stepfather story.

@TrilliumTC my dad thinks that the wolf represents death, like in Harry Potter and how Nathan is escaping from it, but it is really subtle.
