How do you get such a smooth buttercream crumb coat? Do you have a video for it? Also can I ask what icing type you recommend to write/pipe with onto fondant?
@mattchewone We have a video on smoothing buttercream, links aren't allowed here in posts, but you can find it by searching the videos in our channel. Definitely use ROYAL ICING to pipe onto fondant. Thanks for watching!
I was wondering if "the mat" with a grid is available for purchase. I have a Wilton grid mat - any suggestions on how to use your mat with a grid? I am a beginner so I would appreciate any tips prior to purchasing. Your video is awesome. Thank you for the quick & thorough tutorial.
@babyjydragon It's not ready yet, probably our next production run will have grid marks. You can use one of the grid mark mats underneath The Mat, or slide it under when you think it's close if it makes it slide around too much. Thanks!
@emmaskane78 What country are you from, I can likely help you find an equivalent product. Vegetable shortening here can be found in many brands, most likely Crisco. In England, you might find Trex. You can also substitute a very light spray of pan spray (like the Pam brand, but without flour), that would work well, too. Let me know if I can help further!
@vampydanii Unless the biggest cake you're going to cover is 10", you won't get away with spending less than $5,000 on a sheeter. If you are going to do one that small, you can get away with about $1,700. Not really affordable for a lot of people starting a business or working on a budget. How many cakes have you made?
@vampydanii Have you made cakes? For fun, for profit, etc.? The teacher may be very good with cakes, but may not have any business experience. I see that often in this industry. When you get to the business operations of the course you are taking, you should do a cost analysis and determine how many cakes it will take you (after costs including food, overhead, labor, etc., assuming you are paying yourself) to see a return on investment. Comprehensive Course at Sweet Wise will solve all that.
@SweetWiseInc mad both for profit and fun granted they dont match up to your experiance and skill since im a beginner i know the cost i've dealt with it already countless time i dont need your course. im still young in hs and already studying and i know how to run a business ive taken many course mad many cakes the teacher may not be the best and neither are you dont get so rowdy about some comment

Hello, I am from Holland and order a mat, still waiting for it to come in, can't wait to give it a try. I also love the silpin rolling pin, tried several before, but the silpin is the best.
I just got my Mat in! I am so looking forward to using it. I love fondant! It's so universal! I make mine from scratch! I also checked other cake design stores for a similar mat no one had no idea where to get them from, so I gave them your website info! Just awesome! Let's bake!
Oh thank you for this! I don't make cakes/work with fondant, but i do work with polymer clay! When i make mini cakes and try to cover it with a small layer of clay (like the fondant) i always just smoosh down the little folds in it but then it ends up with big lumps in those places (which bothers me lol). So i will defiantly try your technique! Again, thank you!
Hi Sweetwiseinc I was wondering if you have any ideas on how to go about learning to decorate cakes. I live in Montana and there isn't any schools or classes near me! I could really use some help. decorating cakes has been a dream of mine since I was young. I'd really love to learn :)
@SheSvpabAd There's no time like the present! FondX tastes something like marshmallows, and the Elite by FondX tastes mildly of Raspberry and White Chocolate. Give it a try; you'll love it!
Hello I just purchased THE MATT and I was wondering if there was a grace period between seasoning it and using the mat? And also I'm a fan of the Wilton ready to use fondants. Is there any suggestions on using that with the mat?or is just like using the fondants you use In your videos? I wanted to know because I have a wedding cake I'm making for sunday and I wanted to use the mat, and I wanted to use the Wilton fondants.... Thank You!! Xoxo
@pattywatty650 There is no grace period. You can use it right away. THE MAT works great with any fondant, even though we are partial to FondX. :) I'm sure you'll have great success no matter what you use. Have fun!
Used my new mat for the first time last night covering a 3 tier wedding cake. Wow, what a great tool. I have often had issues covering my cakes in fondant but the mat made it so easy. I do a lot of cakes so my mat will be getting a lot of work.
I just used this product for the first time and I could not have been happier with how it turned out! Pure genius!! Thanks a million for making ny job easier :)
@oregidqcaj Glad you like it! Found ANOTHER report on CNN today about studies showing possible damage to baby girls in utero from ingredients in those toxic plastics! THE MAT is 100% Food Safe! Not only does it work great, it keeps those poisons (which you can smell) out of our food. Win-win! Thanks again for liking it!
@rocklopez08 THE MAT does not come with store bought fondnat but you can purchase a really great tasting easy to work w/ fondant in the Sweet Wise Online Store.
Thanks a lot! :) I'm not using any coloring but the recipe definitly needed tweeking with a lot of extra sugar! The mat is back to being absolutely perfect again! :) By far the BEST purchase ever! You guys rock!

@Kimilena86 Different recipes all have unique characteristics depending on the ingredients. We have found that all fondants work well on THE MAT but some recipes require a little tweaking. If your MM fondant is sticking to THE MAT, just knead in a little extra confectioners’ sugar. I believe some recipes anticipate people rolling out fondant the old fashioned way by dusting their countertop which is really just the same as kneading in additional dry ingredients.
@Kimilena86 Also, If your fondant stuck to THE MAT such that you had to wash and re-season, you really need to make sure you let THE MAT completely air dry before re-seasoning. If there is any moisture on THE MAT regardless of how much confectioners you knead, the fondant will stick. About re-seasoning… The seasoning process is only to keep THE MAT from sticking to itself so you’ll be the best judge on whether or not to re-season.
Finally, before you start to roll out your fondant, take a small piece and roll it out to about the size of your palm and check to see if it peels off easily. If not you’ll need to add additional confectioners’ sugar.
@Kimilena86 Another factor that could contribute to fondant sticking to THE MAT, is if you’re using a lot of color, especially gel paste or water/alcohol based colors. Check out our Coloring Fondant video on our channel , in the video we suggest using powdered food color in conjunction w/ gel paste and letting colored fondant rest after kneading in color.
I bought the Mat and I am so glad I did. I am self taught and I've always been terrified of covering a whole cake w/ fondant. After using the Mat on two cakes I can say that it is so easy that I'm sorry I didn't try fondant sooner. :)
I bought THE MAT and I have to say I love it! I'm having problems with this method of smoothing. Idk if I'm rolling the fondant too thin or what but when I get to the bottom I usually have one spot that tears! What am I doing wrong and is there any way to fix the tiny tear? Thanks!
i got my mat about 3 weeks ago, and used it to make my daughter's 4th birthday cake. I must say, it is the best purchase i've made. It's sooooo easy to use and it keeps my work area nice and clean. I LOOOOOOOVEEEE it. =)

Have you tried marshmallow fondant?? N THE MAT looks helpful. Im not sure what to do prior to fondanting tho bc mine always cracks n then after i get it all fixed up my cake sweats n ruins everything ....how do i prevent this?
@campanitabonita69 Adding artwork/print to THE MAT has proven to be quite and engineering challenge and we've been working on it for quite a long time. It is proving difficult to find a food safe ink that will stick to the food safe material we use in making THE MAT. We have a couple solutions we are looking at but we're still in the test phase in still months from production.
@craftyboy160 Also from our online store. Just click on or name, sweetwiseinc under each video. You can click on the links at the top of our channel to shop from our store. Be sure to subscribe to our cannel so you can see when we post new videos. We've got an incredible sale on colored Fondant right now!
@bellezzacondolore Good News! Fondant doesn't have to taste like "poop" Probably what you are familiar with the fondant sold at craft stores. Sweet Wise recommends Fondx Fondant... Fondx tastes great and is easy to work with. It DOES NOT have a nasty chemical order or taste like chalk. It really does taste great!
I enjoyed viewing your video on preparing a fondant to a round cake. You make it so easy but in reality in can be difficult for a novice like myself. I love the mat idea and how stress-free the process can be. How can I order a mat set? Please provide the necessary details. Thank you.
I absolutely loved this video. You have woman logic going on here. Everything you did you explained and it all made perfect sense. I am definitely going to subscribe to your channel.
GREAT VIDEO, too bad I didnt see this video before. Made fondant for a large cake n had lots of problems. At the end it looked very nice but it took me so long to get it right. Next time Im going to try ur method. Thanks for sharing ur talent with us.
Love it, no need to roll using sugar that's going to dry out the fondant. I'm on my phone so can c your profile page, what's the website and do you ship to Europe
I just ordered a mat and am so excited to use it. I've done fondant cakes in the past and have always dreaded doing them. I'm looking forward to getting it-I have a four tier cake to do at the end of the month. So glad I found your video. Thanks for sharing!!!
@Yes you should, its way easier to put fondant on the cake if its chilled , then when your smoothing the fondant, the warmth from your hand with adhere everything together!
@rraannddaallllable At Sweet Wise, we prefer using Fondx which you can order from our online store. Fondx tastes great and is easy to work with. THE MAT works great with any fondant though so whether you use MM fondant or not is really a matter of taste.
@0001rayray Keep watching all our videos and make sure you subscribe. Soon we'll be adding live classes via webcast that you can follow along with at home.
OMG, this is the BEST tutorial video I've ever seen. This young lady is an EXCELLENT teacher/instructor. I wish I would have had her for my algebra teacher...she's wowsome! Thank you so very much for sharing! I'm elated to sit in your YOUTUBE CLASSROOM! ;-D
@desireehart100 Could be a number of things. Write us at the address on our contact us page and provide some more detail and we'll be happy to answer your question.
@lionbear1124 It really is a matter of your own timing and convenience. You can cover either right after icing the cake or you can refrigerate before covering. If you cover after refrigerating, the air inside the cake will expand as the cake warms which can cause bulges in the fondant. To avoid this problem, simply create a small vent in the fondant using a thin skewer through which the air can escape.
Different brands and homemade recipes all work well with THE MAT. We prefer fondx for the price, quality and taste as well as it works wonderfully w/ THE MAT. If you have a recipe that is especially moist, just knead in some powdered sugar and use a small piece to test and roll out between THE MAT. It should release w/o distorting.
We use both pins in the classroom, pins with and w/o handles. We find it is easier to use pins w/ handles. If you’re using a pin w/o handles, it is easier to not roll w/ the pin but instead hold the pin firmly and use it to push the fondant almost like squeezing toothpaste from a tube.
I'm having a difficult time rolling out my fondant between the mat. I use a large non stick rolling pin without handles as I've always done, but it seems that I have to use so much more energy compared to the table & cornflour method. Also, my store bought fondant sticks to the mat so much that when I come to remove the sheets it sticks to the point my fondant is distorted. The only upside I've seen is that my fondant does not dry out. The end product is great but it's a struggle to get there.
I just received The Mat in the mail and this was the best investment I have made. I can't believe how easy it is to use and I don't have to redo fondant anymore when I try to put it on larger cakes. One time and it's done. And yes I use marshmallow fondant and it works great.

Seems good for lifting the fondant over the cake but she was having trouble trying to get the mat away to cover the cake. Not sure i'm sold on it just yet......
I so wish I had found this video before I did my first fondant cake. It turn out the best and ever since I've been trying to find a video that would help. I'm definitely going to invest in the mats before I do the next one. :)
This video was "very informative." The mat IS part of the success, it appears....I have worked with frosting and cookie dough; it does break when lifting (on occasion). The mat is the answer to a "perfect" fondant...now I'm thinking about making my daughter's baby shower cake vs. paying $50-plus for it. :)
"Dont be tempted to smash down the lil puckers" LOL.. love it! This video was awesome! i learned alot! i am inspiring to one day open a bakery selling cakes & watching this video reminds me why.. its fun, its creative, imaginative, & of course there so cute :) it was a good video & i love the mat! everything she said about it was sooo true! The mat eases the stress off of so many problems you can run into doing it the "old fashion" style..
I see you use Fondx. How about brands like Satin Ice or Pettinice? I have not baked a cake yet, but I am really interested in trying some basic ones first. But I would like to find a good fondant to use from here and on. Just getting opinions. I've read somewhere that fondant taste gross, or it's inedible, but I just don't understand this. It is edible, I thought, and I want to use a brand that taste really good and people won't turn their noses to it when I say it's fondant.
oh my gosh. I'm so glad i watched this. I love how you pointed out some of the mistakes people make while putting on the fondant. I had my first experience with fondant about 2 weeks ago while making a birthday cake for my mom. I ended up throwing away 2 tries of fondant on the first tier. that was a lot of wasted fondant! and I am definitely going to get on purchasing a mat!
@womern We've had a number of customers that have had great success with MMF. Those that didn't, after putting our heads together, had a really soft recipe. Try yours out. If it sticks a little, add more powdered sugar. Make sure if you ever have a sticky batch, clean your MAT really well so there isn't residue left on it. A slightly damp lint free paper towel should do it.
Do you still use frosting or something to put the fondant over? I wanna bake my friend a wicked pretty cake for her birthday this weekend and I've never worked with fondant and so hopefully it turns out good! Haha. What does it taste like?
@pinkystardust1 Absolutely! You should be able to order through the website, which you can get to easily by clicking through from SweetWiseInc below this comment. Let us know if you have any trouble.
The only fondant I use with the exception of black is MMF. I use a 16oz bag of jumno marshmallows, 2 tbsp of water, 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Microwave this for two minutes,... pour into a heavy duty mixer and add half a bag of powedered sugar using paddle. remove paddle after thoroughly mixed, attach hook attachment and add the rest of the bag. Apply a generous amt of crisco to hands and remove from mixing bowl and wrap wit saran wrap. I add about 1/8th of a cup of crisco to finished batch.
@alysia9382 Homemade MMF can be nice but at Sweet Wise, we really prefer Fondx Fondat and Elite Fondx. Fondx fondants are great tasting and soooo easy to work with. Using fondx saves alot of time and effort over making your own MMF. Also, making heavy doughs in your mixer is hard on the motor and you can ruin your mixer in your making your own on a frequent basis.
Thank you so much for taking the time to show us how to cover a cake with fondant and all the little "hints" you give that we can't get from books. I'd love one of those mats!

@rocknrolldoll9407 We have had numerous customers that use MMF have great success with THE MAT. Some that have not, it seems have a really soft, sticky recipe or very humid conditions. So, just a heads up! Yes, you can use it, but just beware of a really sticky recipe. Good luck!
@rocknrolldoll9407 Yes, you can add more sugar, but I have always struggled getting it right. Others do also, others don't. I can only speak for myself, and the feedback I get from my customers - not worth the trouble when FondX is out there all nice and ready for you. Worth trying to avoid stress and headaches. If it's not your thing, that's okay, too! Good luck with it!

@rocknrolldoll9407 I add about 1/8 cup of crisco to each finished bath of fondant. Make sure you cover your mat in crisco when u get it and wife off excess. My MMF has NEVER stuck and actually the only kind that has stuck in Fondarific.
Hi, could you tell me what sort of rolling pin are you using........i have one like that but wooden it is`nt very heavy and i struggle to roll out the fondant with the mat, it takes me ages and really hurts my wrist. I would be very grateful for any tips. Thank you.

@TheMariaevelina We've shipped to UAE before. From our youtube channel, go to our website to buy, it will calculate the shipping for you (that will be the most expensive part, about another $35 US. My husband just arrived in Bulgaria, and has a couple of extra MATS with him. Maybe shipping will be less from there. Trying to set up a distributor in the UK as well as Eastern Europe. Go to "Contact Us" on our website to send an email. Pavel will get it, can maybe set up shipment from Bulgaria.
@xLofDxKingPin Making your own fondant is really hard work and if you using a mixer, it tends to burn up the motor fast. We prefer Fondx fondant and Elite fondx. Fondx is a really great tasting fondant that is easy to work with and tastes great. You can purchase Fondx at Sweet Wise in our online store. Thanks for watching our videos and buying THE MAT! We hope you love using THE MAT as so many other do.

About re-seasoning… The seasoning process is only to keep THE MAT from sticking to itself so you’ll be the best judge on whether or not to re-season.
SweetWiseInc 5 months ago
Finally, before you start to roll out your fondant, take a small piece and roll it out to about the size of your palm and check to see if it peels off easily. If not you’ll need to add additional confectioners’ sugar.
SweetWiseInc 5 months ago

Thanks!

Have you tried marshmallow fondant?? N THE MAT looks helpful. Im not sure what to do prior to fondanting tho bc mine always cracks n then after i get it all fixed up my cake sweats n ruins everything ....how do i prevent this?

I love the mat but I wanted to get the one that has the circles printed on the mat. do you have it available?
campanitabonita69 6 months ago
@campanitabonita69 Adding artwork/print to THE MAT has proven to be quite and engineering challenge and we've been working on it for quite a long time. It is proving difficult to find a food safe ink that will stick to the food safe material we use in making THE MAT. We have a couple solutions we are looking at but we're still in the test phase in still months from production.

@campanitabonita69
Tape a sheet of paper (you can find oversized paper at art stores) with circles to your tabletop. Make sure it larger then your rolling surface.

bellezzacondolore 6 months ago
@bellezzacondolore Good News! Fondant doesn't have to taste like "poop" Probably what you are familiar with the fondant sold at craft stores. Sweet Wise recommends Fondx Fondant... Fondx tastes great and is easy to work with. It DOES NOT have a nasty chemical order or taste like chalk. It really does taste great!

in between icing and putting fondant on a cake do you refrigerate?
lionbear1124 8 months ago

SweetWiseInc 8 months ago
We use both pins in the classroom, pins with and w/o handles. We find it is easier to use pins w/ handles. If you’re using a pin w/o handles, it is easier to not roll w/ the pin but instead hold the pin firmly and use it to push the fondant almost like squeezing toothpaste from a tube.
SweetWiseInc 8 months ago
I'm having a difficult time rolling out my fondant between the mat. I use a large non stick rolling pin without handles as I've always done, but it seems that I have to use so much more energy compared to the table & cornflour method. Also, my store bought fondant sticks to the mat so much that when I come to remove the sheets it sticks to the point my fondant is distorted. The only upside I've seen is that my fondant does not dry out. The end product is great but it's a struggle to get there.

Roro82 11 months ago
oh my gosh. I'm so glad i watched this. I love how you pointed out some of the mistakes people make while putting on the fondant. I had my first experience with fondant about 2 weeks ago while making a birthday cake for my mom. I ended up throwing away 2 tries of fondant on the first tier. that was a lot of wasted fondant! and I am definitely going to get on purchasing a mat!

will this work with homemade marshmallow fondant?
womern 11 months ago
@womern We've had a number of customers that have had great success with MMF. Those that didn't, after putting our heads together, had a really soft recipe. Try yours out. If it sticks a little, add more powdered sugar. Make sure if you ever have a sticky batch, clean your MAT really well so there isn't residue left on it. A slightly damp lint free paper towel should do it.

I add about 1/8th of a cup of crisco to finished batch.
alysia9382 1 year ago
@alysia9382 Homemade MMF can be nice but at Sweet Wise, we really prefer Fondx Fondat and Elite Fondx. Fondx fondants are great tasting and soooo easy to work with. Using fondx saves alot of time and effort over making your own MMF. Also, making heavy doughs in your mixer is hard on the motor and you can ruin your mixer in your making your own on a frequent basis.

@rocknrolldoll9407 We have had numerous customers that use MMF have great success with THE MAT. Some that have not, it seems have a really soft, sticky recipe or very humid conditions. So, just a heads up! Yes, you can use it, but just beware of a really sticky recipe. Good luck!
SweetWiseInc 1 year ago
@SweetWiseInc do i add more powdered sugar if its a little sticky? or is there another way to make it less sticky?
rocknrolldoll9407 1 year ago
