As for poles while skating, it's good XC ski skate training, very much like road training on roller skis.  Your pole tips have to be good and sharp, but as you can see the poling is working out just fine. (cameraman)

Jeff, please explain the use for poles on speed skates? Can you get them planted at all when you're cruising a nice speed?

I will take my skate poles to the ice next time, but fear they'll be dead weight. Ice rarely points uphil in my neck of the woods. ;-)
