The 440 was a tire burning mother back in the day wasn't it? And that Mopar big block sound is pure ear candy but I love the growl of a smallblock Ford just as much if not more. I had a '70 with the 383 back in the day and I had to give up my '08 Mustang GT because of the economy and I miss them both. If I had to choose one over the other man that would be tough.

One Charger was sold back to the dealer..the Mustang actually fell appart !!! The Dodge was solid,and the Mustang even had head and cam work and couldnt touch the stock 440 !!! As the 440's run in the 12's stock 1/4 mile as per my new 440 Charger did when new..

The Vette has always gone toe to toe with the best of them but she really represents America as a sports car. When the Viper first came out we thought it was the end of the line for the Vette. A LITTLE SIDE NOTE FOR YOU OUT THERE. The man driving the charger was the same guy who was following James Dean with the chase car the day James Dean was killed. James was driving the porshe with a station wagon and trailer following not far behind. I believe James was killed on Hwy 44 in central California. East of paso robles? Go there in Sept. it is real green and the weather is cool. Don't look for any big landmark or anything, just look for the split in road.
Watch the chase scene and you will see that they leave the charger with stock wheels and tires. It slips and slides all over the place. The mustang was highly modified for the day, but mostly for handling. They really only changed ignition and carburation on the mustang. Not near enough to beat a 440. A RT 440 had 375 to 400 HP, The 390 was at best 350. They both had the good fuel back then, but the 440 was a bad ass engine.
When the mustang was finished being modified, they ran the charger and mustang up near griffith observatory here in Southern California. The Charger just ran away from the stang. I own a 68 GT with the 390, and i am here to tell you that a 440 RT will walk away from my stang. Ford made alot of mistakes with the 390 HIPO engine. Starting with the heads and the carb. Both too small. And those are the 2 most important parts on a HIPO engine

Its all in the design and Dodges design in Engines and Suspension was just better at the time. Only if they had that same motive today. Ford only put torsion bars in their top performers, Dodge had them in every single car they made in the 60s-70s, they handled better because of it. Better than just a shock and coil spring wraped around it like Ford/Chevy.

schoolin: Steve McQueens mustang has a 351 cleveland in it. It weighed just over 2300lbs. Posi would be great for drag racing but would make the front end push like a son of a gun with the power to weight ratio... course seeing one tire smoking is never as fun as seeing the whole back end light up. The excessive wheel hop could have been avoided with the addition of traction bars. Hardly a stock item though.
Not quite sure why you think Posi and front end push are related. I would think its more related to front/rear weight distribution. The same reason that Porsche 911s have problems with the rear end sliding out.
I agree with the fact that the Charger is the better muscle car of the two, but that does not translate to the Mustang as being a piece of shit because its not.

actually it was only a 383 charger. they had to put headers a bigger carb and a camshaft in the mustang just to keep it ahead of the stock 383 charger. i saw the interview with the guy who tuned the mustang.

well first off my dad saw this movie when it came out in the day. stock for stock the boss was a hog,lol. duke of hazzard guys,lol. the charger was longer, hevier, wider and still had about a second on the mutang. the movie was set up to appeal to the ford ppl. if you watch the out takes on the movie, the guy in the ford was driving the Charger around when they where not filmin and doing burn outs in the parking lot. funny stuff.
heres the facts. the charger was about 3800lbs 440 6brl with 375hp and 450pnd trq. runs the 1/4 in 13.9 sec. on skinny tires that are thinner then honda civic tires stock. the mustang boss 302 was about 330hp and about 430pnd trq. weighed about 3600lbs and ran the 1/4 in 14.2 sec on skinny ass tires too.
the mopars have alway been better on the drag strip then Chevy or ford. but ford has made a better road corse car. i hate to admit it but its true.... for a while at least.

@DJ13SlipKnoT in the dukes of hazard they used both the 68 and 69 because the body styles are so close. My car is a prostreet with roll bars and its tubbed with a 572 hemi in it. we dynoed it at 800hp on pump gas. Click on my name and theres a picture of it in my profile. from what I read they had to slow down the charger for the scene, a 440 charger will easily outrun a 390 mustange, both needed suspension upgrades

actually it was only a 383 charger. they had to put headers a bigger carb and a camshaft in the mustang just to keep it ahead of the stock 383 charger. i saw the interview with the guy who tuned the mustang.

how well do yall really know this chase scene? lets find out? how many times did they pass the same vw bug? what happens to mcqueen's mustang when it jumps while passing the bug? how many mustangs did they use while filming the chase scene? what were the differences between the multiple mustangs? whats the mustang missing and why? and what happened to the charger at the end of the chase? ive actually sat in the car driven by mcqueen a while back.

well first off my dad saw this movie when it came out in the day. stock for stock the boss was a hog,lol. duke of hazzard guys,lol. the charger was longer, hevier, wider and still had about a second on the mutang. the movie was set up to appeal to the ford ppl. if you watch the out takes on the movie, the guy in the ford was driving the Charger around when they where not filmin and doing burn outs in the parking lot. funny stuff.

heres the facts. the charger was about 3800lbs 440 6brl with 375hp and 450pnd trq. runs the 1/4 in 13.9 sec. on skinny tires that are thinner then honda civic tires stock. the mustang boss 302 was about 330hp and about 430pnd trq. weighed about 3600lbs and ran the 1/4 in 14.2 sec on skinny ass tires too.
