Question was asked - this is from Sept 1977, live lp recorded at hammersmith odeon. To put this completely in a context that none of you really probably care about, it was his first gigs in the UK, at a time when Roadrunner and first lp had been seen as key movers in the punk revolution (pistols used to play Rrunner). so there we all are, all punked up and ready to go, and then this, which is the first song they played!!! Count the encores! On the world's smallest PA. A truly magic moment.
@26mistakes yup, 3,000 of us that night, 3,000 the night before. Hey, we were open-minded in those days to anything different and we had a sense of humour. Yup, there were a few who spent the whole night calling for Hospital, but it was just a bizarre engaging night. At times he sang without a mike, crawled around the stage to I'm a little dinosaur, and was just generally the JoJo that he has been one way or the other for the last 30 plus years!
Its from the album Jonathan sings from 1983. But its one of the most asked at the concerts... I remember the first time I heard him live in college ... still a big fan.
i am the ice cream man running over fat kids with my van. if they try to run i will shoot them with my gun. if they are not dead i will shoot them in the head. if they try to flee i will kill them with my m16
@24Senro inappropriate comment especially on a song like this. go back to your shitty rap music. me? I listen to all kinds of music, this music.. popular club music... rock... metal... everything
At the 2nd minute....you go this song can't possibly be 8 minutes and then he keeps on going and then he taunts the shit out of you with it and you can't stop laughing because on one hand its the greatest fucking song ever but on the other you just hear it for 8 fucking minutes.
I hpe they do a criminal background check on all icecream men in the USA. A pedofile could potentially xclean house with all them young boys. Just think for a soft cone a young boy just might drop his shorts. Woo Nelly!!
All this time I never knew the live album was recorded in leeds, still possibly my favorite album of all time, especially 'my little kookenhaken' saw him in sheffield 79 and about 15 times since (always in small clubs) and still can't understand why he was never a lot bigger, jeffs earlier post explains the crowd screaming for roadrunner at the end (which they never got)
I have the record, which probably dates me! There was a painter that made money painting kinda childlike, Henri Rousseau i think. Jonathan Richman could do the same trick with music and I loved it!
I love this. One of the best things about it is the crowd. This was recorded in Leeds in 1977, but none of Jonathan Richman's recordings had been released in the UK. Everyone had only heard that the Modern Lovers were the "godfathers of punk rock." So all of these hardened, angry punkers showed up hoping for some loud garage rock. You can hear it in the recording - they were clearly stunned at this skinny dude playing pretty tunes.
By the end, they were on their feet screaming for more.
actually, we were talking about buddhism :) it appears that some buddhist groups have used the song for meditation, and our teacher had joined one group and thought it worked great ^^
@adamnaslund There's a wonderful cover on YouTube of Richman's "That Summer Feeling" by Anders Wendin (Moneybrother) and Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide, Sakert) .
I hopped on stage after one of his shows and by some luck found his changing room. Long story short, got the great man's autograph on my concert ticket. One of the best shows I've ever been to. Gotta love that Jojo
i heard this song on that commerical like years ago...i still remember that song because I liked it so much. Does anyone know where I can get a cover version from that commercial...this version is great but I realllly like the cover.
I find it funny how teenagers today are looking for good music (not rap!) and they go back to these kinds of songs and bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Monkeese....ect. i love this song...
i love this music, but please do not throw all rap under the same category as the artists that are played on the radio. look up black star, or souls of mischief
This song makes a great drinking game. Everyone drinks whenever Johnathan sings the words "Ice Cream Man". People who have never heard the song are never prepared for the encores!
i went to a old record Store and herd this Song play and im So in love with it, sounds like somehting i would hear today with the indie Scene such a good Song makes me wana ride my bike.
