  • best part is "alright. our next song is gonna be a... ONE MORE TIME!!!"

  • genius^^

  • Question was asked - this is from Sept 1977, live lp recorded at hammersmith odeon. To put this completely in a context that none of you really probably care about, it was his first gigs in the UK, at a time when Roadrunner and first lp had been seen as key movers in the punk revolution (pistols used to play Rrunner). so there we all are, all punked up and ready to go, and then this, which is the first song they played!!! Count the encores! On the world's smallest PA. A truly magic moment.

  • @vivaged great info! thanks!

  • @vivaged 20 minutes later and i just can't get the picture of a bunch of oldschool punks clapping and singing along to this..

  • @26mistakes out of my head.. can't focus.. must.. sing.. along..

  • @26mistakes yup, 3,000 of us that night, 3,000 the night before. Hey, we were open-minded in those days to anything different and we had a sense of humour. Yup, there were a few who spent the whole night calling for Hospital, but it was just a bizarre engaging night. At times he sang without a mike, crawled around the stage to I'm a little dinosaur, and was just generally the JoJo that he has been one way or the other for the last 30 plus years!

  • 6:02 pure childishness, brilliant!!!!

  • Have always thought that he was the musical equivalent of Henri Rousseau, but friends just thought I was weird for liking him in the 70's!

  • Ice cream men are drug dealers trying to launder money

  • If everyone in the world would just listen to this song every morning when they got up....the world would simply HAVE to be a kinder place.

  • Awww, why did he stop!!!

  • Just wonderful, no other words needed.

  • one more time :D UUUH I like it.

  • Its from the album Jonathan sings from 1983. But its one of the most asked at the concerts... I remember the first time I heard him live in college ... still a big fan.

  • What is this from???? A movie or show???

  • ding ding.

  • Great song...6.02 gets me every time, Jonathan Richman is like a little school kid when he gets excited.... timeless!!!!

  • i am the ice cream man running over fat kids with my van. if they try to run i will shoot them with my gun. if they are not dead i will shoot them in the head. if they try to flee i will kill them with my m16

  • @24Senro inappropriate comment especially on a song like this. go back to your shitty rap music. me? I listen to all kinds of music, this music.. popular club music... rock... metal... everything

I dont listen to rap. it aint music son

  • Isn't it kinda weird that Jonathan Richman is such a bad singer without it sounding awful at all, the opposite even. It sounds really good!

  • Love ice cream man- Jonathan richman-

  • Favorites

  • kick ass

  • At the 2nd minute....you go this song can't possibly be 8 minutes and then he keeps on going and then he taunts the shit out of you with it and you can't stop laughing because on one hand its the greatest fucking song ever but on the other you just hear it for 8 fucking minutes.

  • 2 peoples screen froze and they couldnt replay it any more time :P

  • Once is never enough.....

  • I hpe they do a criminal background check on all icecream men in the USA. A pedofile could potentially xclean house with all them young boys. Just think for a soft cone a young boy just might drop his shorts. Woo Nelly!!

  • OH MY GOD!! MAKE IT STOP!!

  • @dali123

    Like go around the block!!

  • @jhasjkfhkjs

    Like go around the block!!

    But come right back.

  • If I ever find someone else who knows this song/Jonathan Richman, I'm going to marry them.

  • @katjakitty22 LOL Amen. I've said the same thing, about him and also Sufjan Stevens.

  • @rickyb1967

Sufjan and Jonathan are the two greatest musicians ever.

  • @katjakitty22 What are you doing next Saturday ? I'm available.

  • "Ice cream man, upon my block...." slightly inspired by "I've got a girl named

Rama Lama Ding Dong...". But what the heck, good songs anyhow.

  • this is the best happy music ever!

  • All this time I never knew the live album was recorded in leeds, still possibly my favorite album of all time, especially 'my little kookenhaken' saw him in sheffield 79 and about 15 times since (always in small clubs) and still can't understand why he was never a lot bigger, jeffs earlier post explains the crowd screaming for roadrunner at the end (which they never got)

  • By FAR the best way to occupy any 8 minutes of your life.

  • Someone missed the like button!

  • I have the record, which probably dates me! There was a painter that made money painting kinda childlike, Henri Rousseau i think. Jonathan Richman could do the same trick with music and I loved it!

  • I love this. One of the best things about it is the crowd. This was recorded in Leeds in 1977, but none of Jonathan Richman's recordings had been released in the UK. Everyone had only heard that the Modern Lovers were the "godfathers of punk rock." So all of these hardened, angry punkers showed up hoping for some loud garage rock. You can hear it in the recording - they were clearly stunned at this skinny dude playing pretty tunes.

By the end, they were on their feet screaming for more.

  • i loved how he was like in the middle of talking and is like ONE MORE TIME! and chuckles!! i like this version!

so weird my friend talks exactly like him and he laughs the same :D

  • The nature of the song brings out the child in all of us.

I love the little joke Jonathan plays around 6.00. His little giggle afterwards just encapsulates what the song is all about.

  • I love that little lead he does... so simple but sounds so great....

  • thank you very much, our next song it's going to be...

  • @bananimalistic cucu

  • This might just be the happiest song ever made.

  • sweet, sweet song...

  • It! won't! stop! And I don't want it to!

Man, I'm tearing up- that's so much fun.

  • "NO! Eh-heh-heh-heh."

    Fantastic.

  • On which album is this version listed? I NEED that album!

  • @1144bram

It's on "Roadrunner, Roadrunner: The Beserkley Collection", a two disc compilation.

  • thanks!!!

  • This version is from "Modern Lovers Live", the record is from 1977 or 1978, a little after he had a hit with "Egyptian Reggae"...

  • Wonderful - AND a picture of hairy-chested Jonathan, to boot. For what more could one ask? :)

  • this is teh bezt 50ng evar!!

  • Challenging :)

  • oh Jonathan Richman, your voice sounds great through my headphones

  • There is only one. I haven't yet been able to succinctly describe Jonathan to people who haven't seen him. Sorta defies comparison, eh?

  • I'd say he's like Lou Reed meets Brian Wilson - and I always thought his Modern Lovers songs were like Catcher in the Rye, the musical.

  • That giggle at 6 minutes makes it all worthwhile.

  • Thank you, our next song will be -ONE MORE TIME!

  • ya liek teh eyez creem mahn?

  • i loved this when i was 4, 25 yrs ago This is so cool

  • bei diesem lied lauf ich auch mit nem breiten grinsen rum, hihi, zu geil

  • epic!

  • Ding ding!!!!!!!!!! love your truck an all its neat a neat

    Greetings from Sweden

  • @stwongbad85 Why?

  • @stwongbad85 Why, does he live there?

  • @stwongbad85

    The weather is dreadful :-(

  • meditating in a religion class? To the ice cream man song? wat the hell kinda religion is that? sounds like a fun one

  • actually, we were talking about buddhism :) it appears that some buddhist groups have used the song for meditation, and our teacher had joined one group and thought it worked great ^^

  • lol buddhists like ice cream huh?

  • @adamnaslund There's a wonderful cover on YouTube of Richman's "That Summer Feeling" by Anders Wendin (Moneybrother) and Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide, Sakert) .

  • legend

  • Wow. That puts my faith back into religion. Wow.

  • Reminds me of my babies! This was the lullaby for them.

  • i heard this song on that commerical like years ago...i still remember that song because I liked it so much. Does anyone know where I can get a cover version from that commercial...this version is great but I realllly like the cover.

  • I find it funny how teenagers today are looking for good music (not rap!) and they go back to these kinds of songs and bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, The Monkeese....ect. i love this song...

  • i love this music, but please do not throw all rap under the same category as the artists that are played on the radio. look up black star, or souls of mischief

  • I so love this song...I remember well, more than 30 years ago.....a friend would just keep playing this to wind people up (some people!)

  • This song makes a great drinking game. Everyone drinks whenever Johnathan sings the words "Ice Cream Man". People who have never heard the song are never prepared for the encores!

  • So very one of the great in my book.
