Oh. My.God. I'm going to have nightmares from this!! Time to clean my whole frikking house and yard. I would die if my kids found a nest like this and got hurt.
Its a hibernaculum, pretty much only garter snakes do this but what you see is only the begging there are hundreds and maybe even thousands more under the ground especially in the north west.
Oh, and even nonvenomous snakes can draw blood with their bites. If you get bit, wash the wound with soap and cover it, as it can easily become infected.
Ah, garters. Might be a brood of juvies with a mother (like pit vipers, garter snakes bear live young). Could also be a den, in which case you should watch out for venomous snakes. They sometimes den up with nonvenomous species.
Garter snakes are mildly venomous thats why your getting the itching/burning sensation. A lot of pet shops stop selling garter snakes for the simple reason.
@lacewing183 I didn't know that although I have been bitten by them a few times. The big ones tend to be a lot more aggressive but most garter snakes don't bite.
@snakemast66 No way is a garter a type of rat snake. Garters are related to water snakes. Rat snakes are constrictors. Garters and Rats are on two separate categories.By the way no constrictor snake is venomous and no venomous snake is a constrictor. Just a few snake facts.
@lacewing183 actually it is a type of ratsnake also there are two snakes that can constrict after venomating prey the king cobra and rattlesnake have done this numerous occasions
@snakemast66 I disagree with you there is No way in the world a garter snake is a type of rat snake look it up. For 1 rats are constrictors and garters are not. The venom is used so the snake doesn't have to constrict their prey. So i have to disagree with you again.
@lacewing183 At first, I was going to call you out on the poisonous reference...but very nice reaserching! I didn't know (either) they were poisonous; I kept on avg. about 2-3 a year growing up lol. I might have to give a little more though to the risk-factors involved of keeping one in the yard at my daughter's request; again ;O)
@TheMunkinutz Sorrry but I have to call you out on using poisonous ;) Snakes are actually venemous. By definition, venemous means that an animal uses injected toxins to subdue prey. Many venemous animals are not near enough venemous to pose any threat to humans, including garters. Also since garters don't have fangs, to inject the venom they have to chew on their prey for 5-6 minutes (which they don't do for defensive strikes) And even if they do that, the most that happens is a little swelling.
@MegaNatureguy I would not say that. Most snakes above boas and pythons (and particularly colubrids like the garter) do have venom, it is just so mild that it is mostly harmless to humans. There can be mild reactions, though, like the one stated above. We tend to only place the venomous label on snakes that cause severe reactions in humans after envenomation. Research it for yourself...
@doyle178 yeah. garter snakes are not venomous. not even mildly. their saliva can have bacteria that if got in a cut can infect you but they dont have venom. learn about snakes
@MegaNatureguy Listen bro, you are obviously not privy to the most recent and ongoing research about colubrids and snake venom (garter snakes being one study). Garters DO possess a mild neurotoxic venom that IS mostly harmless to humans in most cases but DOES exist and can produce the itchy swelling reaction described above. Re-learn about snakes
@doyle178 snakes like boomslangs have venom and they are colubrids but garter snakes dont have venom. i got bit lots of times and i had no swelling or itching. dude you dont know anything about snakes. you dont even have a single video up.
@MegaNatureguy So snake knowledge is based on videos posted??? LOL!! I'm starting to realize how much of a kid you are!! I can see that you have once again chosen not to research this for yourself. I also have been bitten by garters of many varieties and have not had any ill effects. Effects based on the individual handler. Well, I've wasted enough time on you, kid. If you cant even be bothered to swallow pride and do a little research, I'll try not to confuse you with any more facts.
@MegaNatureguy Ok, I'll try one more thing. Not sure what research you doing, but here's the simplest research of all. In your browser type "Garter snake venom". I just did it to check and at least 10 locations I read through right off described their venom gland and the mild toxins it produces. I do not need to research that way, as I work with researchers and read the final report from the study. There have been several subsequent studies completed on the garter snake (Thamnophis) venom.
@MegaNatureguy Dint say venoumous i said mildly venomous. The bite of a garter can cause a slight itching/burning sensation. Most pet stores at least in my area stop selling garter for this simple fact.
@lacewing183 i said they were venomous. read more of my comments. and yes you are right. they are mildly venomous. but their venom isn't strong enough to cause harm to a human. they are rear fanged and they would have to chew on you for a bit to get the venom into you
@lacewing183 Wow! I didn't know that either as I used to catch garter snakes all the time and I have been bitten repeatedly (I do remember the itching/swelling sensation though). Usually when I am doing gardening in the yard, I'll move things like ornamental rocks and such and usually a couple of them will shoot out and run in different directions.
@lacewing183 I actually did after filming. It would have made for a more interesting video because there must have been at least one hundred snakes under there.
@TheCryptidman These were a combination of garter snakes and Texas brown snakes, neither of which are poisonous. Texas brown snakes are talented at looking like they are toxic by flattening their bodies when they are afraid (flatter bodies are a trait of more toxic species.) I'm glad you liked the video!
@mysteryman64030 Ooh,, okay, I see. I knew I saw some garter snakes but I didn't know if the Texas Browns were venomous. You kept kinda freaking out, it seemed that they were a little more dangerous than a painful bite.
@TheCryptidman I was a little nervous because there were way more snakes in there before I actually started filming. Probably three times as many as you see here. Their bites don't really hurt that bad. It's kind of like getting pricked by a pin and then it itches for a while.
@mysteryman64030 Ah.. Interesting. If you'd like, subscribe to me for some videos about unexplained creatures... Of course, it might take a while, I need to save up and find my camcorder.
Why is it that I want to find snakes and other things in my yard but I never find anything, and people who done want to find them always do..I'm jealous.
@TheKodak111 Haha That's my mom's back yard and yes she is a hoarder. Most of the work I do over here consists of moving pile of junk A to pile of junk B and enable the hoarding. Sad but true.
@mysteryman64030 Haha I don't see why either. I used to have a pet one of these named Axl. You should round them up and try to sell them to a pet store. Back when I got mine about 15 years ago they were sold for $25 each.
@TrollingYourButt Those things are a dime a dozen over here in Missouri. It's illegal to sell any species that is native to the state that you live in unfortunately but the money sounds really good. I know a guy who will still buy turtles. I need to see if I can make some money off of him.
