thank you for posting this version. i once saw this in tcm and loved it. i'm glad to be watching this again. laurence olivier is a legend and greer garson was one of the best back then.
this version is soo funny! and the lines!!!!! i laughed so hard while watching it, i love the 2005 version cause it has the best actors, i sort of like the 1995 version because of the "sticking to the story line" but this one is so ridiculous, i like it. honestly, it looks like gone with the wind was filmed on the same day, and the this elizabeth sliped out of her dress to let the scarlet wear while being filmed!
As some other of you have posted, the costumes are odd---but you see that often in "period" movies from the 30's-late 50's; the costumes would hint at the period they were representing, but mostly would look fashionable for the time of a film's release. Greer Garson's costumes in "P&P" could've graced any 1940's debutante ball and not seem out of place, but were not representative of the empire period (of course, the Bennet parents might have found it diffiult to keep each girl "au courant")...

I still prefer this movie's 1940 version over the others. It's quick wit, comedic pace and Lawrence Olivier make it fun to watch! :)
