The 49ers were competing with the Saints, Rams, and sometimes Seahawks in their division, and the NFC was absolutely loaded at the time. The 49ers had a better average record, never losing more than 4 games for a very, very long time. The Patriots were just a cut above, but now Tom Brady is no different than Peyton Manning, and is starting to choke just as often.

Cheating is basically defined as "violating rules or regulations". With that in mind, the Patriots cheated, hands down. The penalty for said cheating was the fines to the team/coach, as well as the loss of the draft pick. That being said, a simple holding penalty also violates the rules, and the team is punished accordingly. So why is it all the Pats-haters cling to this one instance of cheating long after the punishment has been assessed. You might as well dwell on every flag that gets thrown.

People still don't know the facts. There is no rule in the NFL rulebook that says you cannot tape opposing coaches. The rule that the Patriots violated was taping from an unapproved location. The media and ESPN blew this whole thing out of proportion and Goodell wanted to flex his muscle by giving the Patriots an unheard of fine. $250,000 for the team, $500,000 for Belichick, and losing a first round draft pick. All for taping something that 70,000 people see at every game.
