Engage icy downhills really slow. Put it in neutral. Keep steering straight. Feather the brake to keep it smooth and slow. The key is to avoid wheel lock-ups. Best not to drive on icy roads unless you have winter tires on though.
its a popular misconception that Washington drivers can't drive in the snow.... SEATTLE drivers can't drive in the snow. Over here on the east side, we know better. Heck, we can drive in four feet of snow! These people are the exception

Did they use salt on these roads? On the Washington coast it's illegal. In NJ where I used to live, never any problems like this. We used salt on roads. Maybe Spokane is too cold and salt doesn't work.
wow thats pretty sucky drivers. here the roads sometimes are covered withiceand snow the etire winter like 4 months and almost noone slides around like this lol.
Sure the guy at 0:47 can drive, but the white truck (1:31) at the end put all the others to shame. He had a car coming up and a car spinning out behind him and managed to down the hill just fine.
@Kenshiroit yes, we do still put salt on the road, but these accidents wee just after a small snowfall, before we had the chance to put salt on the road
I'm sorry, I lived in this area for most my life, WA drivers suck. They mostly suck because of the CA transplants admittedly, but it doesn't excuse our inability to drive in rain after 3 days of sunlight, or our inability to drive in fog at all. Everytime we have snow I don't check weatherbug, I check youtube.
I think I would have had to put two tires in the snow covered grass (right or left tires) and just drive the damn thing. You notice most of the drivers crashing at the bottom just held the brake while trying to steer? That never works. If they would let off the brakes and just steer the vehicle down the clearest route, most of it could have been avoided. The only truck that went for the snow covered grass route did not look to have done it on purpose, bounced off a pole & back on the road again.
lived in Spokane for 3 years as a cali transplant and had no problems driving the ice and snow . good tires and common sense are key to staying out of wrecks. Too many long time residents drive too fast ,look at the liscence plates of the cars at any wreck ....there all from washington or idaho ,you do not see an out of state car waded up in the snow, out of state drivers are unfamiliar and overly cautious
Washington drivers CAN drive, its the California people who move up here (and yes, for some reaosn they do) they dont know how to drive in our weather
2 really really good drivers, black fusion that didnt even touch the brakes thus giving full steering control and the black chev pick up at thee end who even though decked the pole still had enough sense to throw it into forward gear and give it hell, everyone else panicked and held the brakes and i honestly cant blame them.
That one car drove right through because he didn't use the break, instead his car was able to turn. Every year it snows and this street is always here. I guess some just panicked. It's not that bad they live on the south hill they can afford it.
Difficult hill in these conditions even for you so call expert drivers. Stand in an ice skating rink, now tilt that rink to 30 degree angle and sprinkle some water on it, see if you have any control where your ass ends up. Studded tires, years of driving experience doesn't mean crap. The biggest fault was that of the city of Spokane for not closing Freya till it could be de-iced and sanded.
Ey guys, in Sweden we all have winter tires so this doesn't occur. There are two types, one with studdes and of course studless tires. You guys call the M & S (Mud & snow) which means the same. And as many people are saying - don't step on the breaks when this happens. It's the most stupid thing to do. Traction, grip and steering is the best combo with as little gas as possible...Good luck everybody
I know it sounds weird, but do NOT brake. Braking only makes it worse. To get the traction needed to steer you need to make your wheels turn, therefore you need to accelerate. Sounds crazy but it's the only way.
@sebbe138 special tires for winter driving? really? like what do you mean? like do they make them with like pokey metal nails sticking out so that you stick to the road? cuz that would be really cool!
Wow, we're famous! Ohh Spokane, that is humiliating. Way to make us look stupid. Our city has no good reputation, and now they have to put these idiots on national news. To be fair, the roads are pretty bad lately. But honestly.... This makes me weep.
popular misconception of Spokane drivers. locals know better than this hill for this reason, but California transplants here have no idea watch and learn.
@AVNwinner HAHAH that is SOOO true! We've had so many Californians move here, and last years snow was nonexistent so all the newbies don't know what they're up against.
These were locals! The neighbors on the hills above warned them, and even got the finger from some. One guy sarcastically commented that he'd been going down that hill for 20 years and, guess what, he was in one of those wrecked vehicles. People need to slow down and avoid driving down streets as steep as Freya when there's ice under the snow. 200 accidents that day! Sorry, but it's typical for Spokane. Slow down and don't hit the brakes.
Wow. A lot of needlessly offensive comments directed toward Spokane drivers here. If all you complainers had an idea of how bad our streets really can get...or more importantly, how atrocious the road department has been this year regarding the use of plows and de-icer trucks, then maybe you'd keep your rude comments to yourself...oh and FYI, we're not all this bad. Some of us Spokanites actually do know how to drive in the snow and ice, and we don't appreciate the stereotyping going on here.
I'd love to see those that say WA drivers are horrible drive our roads in this weather..it may not look like much, but in a state that is primarily mountains, hills and valleys, it's nearly impossible to get around with a non 4 wheel drive vehicle in this weather. Our State is sadly under-supplied with vehicles for ice and snow maintenance. Temps fluctuate badly from day to night which causes a freeze/melt cycle that gives us ice, snow, slush, rain, sleet, freezing rain etc. Try it yourself...
