I had the pleasure of hearing and meeting Dave Ramos this evening. A totally consummate musician, and so very appreciative of any praise coming his way. He is now playing with "Los Fabulosos". Anyone who likes Ry Cooder and Flaco Jiminez needs to check them out. They have a 2nd CD due for release in October.
Yes, I was there in the studio in Los Angeles, when they recorded it live. It was the T-Birds at that time. the two girl singers in the back where brought in for vocals and a horn section. what a night.
@jukeking1 Thanks for tellen me cause I allways thought it was stacked, but is it split some way or something cause how does it have a three way switch?
@BACKBONEBAND1 1st position is no tone load, with volume control
2nd position tone load(thru capacitor) the retains some treble 3rd position thru cap and resistor that bleeds nearly all the treble off(this position was actually not useful for much except for very bassy tonal quality). Hope this helps.
I had the great honor of meeting KIm and the rest of the band at the Mt Wachusett Blues Festival in Massachusetts about a year ago what a nice guy and awsome performer. The new line up features the Moeller Bros. Johnny Moellers guitar style reminds me of a young Stevie Ray Vaughn.
@mrjonrickly The esquire was a guitar before the Tele was. Leo's original design had only one pickup. This evolved into the rare two pickup Esquire that was renamed the Broadcaster for a short time. fred Grestch had a line of drums already named Broadkaster and asked Leo to rename his Guitar. Since television was new at the time ,.why not call itthe Telecaster... and tie in to that marketing ploy. Read The Fender Years by Forrest White, or The Telecaster Book by A.R. Duchossoir, for more info
I was here that nite is Los Angeles, But, I do not show up too well in the audience, Wow, That was a FUN Night, Hello kids Love From Lillian, ARtistiChicana...Yeah what a 'Guitar Player" Wow.... WOw.
It's always been Kim's band no doubt. What does he do, run the guitarists off being too restrictive or whatever or do they just go their different "artistic" directions.
they were actually 50/50 for the most part, and they got into fist fights because of the headbutting. Kim wrote most of the songs, Jimmie has an ego big as Texas itself. Jimmie had quit the band several months before Stevie died, the T-Birds were failing musically and he wanted to try some other things besides I-IV-V songs. Damn shame, because apart he and Kim have never done as well as they did together.
That's not true, Jimmie and Kim have both made GREAT records apart, and continue to play blues that's authentic and valid. They never had the same commercial success, but that shit is almost random anyways. Gotta say, as gay as it sounds to say it, Ramos' tone here is incredible....Must have been fun to play with that rig!
Brown Tolex, white knobs, and four 10 inch speakers.
The "Brown" Bandmaster(and Vibro-King) had 3-10's, with the bottom one in the center of the cabnet. The amp in this video is miked like it has 4-10's, if it was a Bandmaster the mic would need to be about 5 inches closer to the center to pick up the speaker.
So I'm going with Fender Concert from October of '62!
I got the AC30, all I need is another Fender amp (I've had a Twin and a Super Reverb but they had to go to pay the bills...). The Vox will do for now!
The DVD which this comes from is great. This segue, into Wrap It up, is ok too. On his last U.K. tour Kim segued Mannish Boy with Look At That, Look At That...it was appalling.
I've got an 06 Blond Ltd Ed Del. Reverb RI and just finished an 18 Watt Marshall Head. I run a reverb pedal with the Marshall to open it up. Sorry to hear "Look at That" was so bad....was it new guitarist. I got that DVD for x-mas, just for Kid Ramos, In general I prefer early T-birds with Jimmy and even Duke....but that concert with Kid was jammin!!!
It wasn't the players, it was the weird combination of perhaps one of the deepest, most heartfelt, down and dirty renditions of 'Mannish Boy'....GREAT blues, seguing into one of their frivolous 'party' songs from their least Fabulous period, the mid-1980s. The effect was more than jarring!
Yes, that DVD is a valuable document. Kid Ramos is a superb player. I love that Gibson Switchmaster he plays in T'Bone Walker's 'The Hustle'. That looks like a very valuable guitar.
i like this type of blues man, hey jimmythey have a monster hurricane comming to louisiana man my pa is one them cajun mafia boss man come eat some cajun cooking man hehehe
1960gal, You might have bought me a drink! Thought it was a blast and they could have rocked the Ferry to the bottom of the Clyde. Agree with you about the guitarists. Kim's harp solos were the highlight, though. Roll on Walter Trout's next Ferry night.
Will follow the WT link, 1960gal. Don't worry about the drink - anybody who drinks the Ferry dry must be quite a bloke! Agree about Lee and Wilko but I would travel to hear any of the old Feelgoods, Canvey Island's finest. Saw them in Glasgow in 1979 when I was a schoolboy. Never caught who was the warm up for the Tbirds, but they were good. One of my companions thought it was one of the Nimmo Brothers. Any idea?
Jeeze, i'd hate to be that Tele! Kid is rippin' it to bits. Kid & Kim have to be the fittest looking guys in music right now ..and it's GREAT to see this. The Blues has been long associated with pasty wimps who are into overindulgence of substances.
Yes, little brother Stevie died in a helicopter crash leaving a venue.
Jimmie Vaughn was the lead guitar player for the Fabulous Thunderbirds. He left the group and was replaced by the guitar player in this video... Kid Ramos.

Woah, that is a killer Esquire tone. Always loved Jimmie's playing on their album version of this, but Ramos is amazing here.
Saw the T-Birds a few times in the early 80s. I thought Jimmie was the world's coolest guitar player back then. He was just ridiculous live.
