@Jnortsify well, marie is the original name of "clara" in the story by E.T.A Hoffman (I read it, it's long but very good, but slightly different from the ballet) and when the first ever performance of The Nutcracker premiered in Russia in 1892, she was called "Masha", which translates to "Clara". Some versions call her "Marie" though, as a homage to the original.
I found a case of irony; my ballet company has a similar costume to this except the sleeves are elbow length and the ribbon's pink
This ballet was publicly embarrassing. The dancing was fine--no problems there. However, to not have an orchestra playing? Tchaikovsky wrote these pieces as practice pieces for his students (granted, his students were mostly expert...nevertheless), so why couldn't they find even a high school orchestra to fill the pit? I read today that this problem has gone on since 2005??? What a joke. I'm glad I only paid half price for the tickets since I only got half of a show without the muscicians.
Im confused i thought the main girls name was clara? Why am i hearing marie now?
