In Canada we call it "highway" or just use the number of the highway. Like the Trans Canada Highway is a series of individual highways that goes across the country. But people who live in a place where there might be more than one numbered road will probably call it by the number. So they wouldn't say highway, they'd say "the 401" or "traffic is heavy northbound on the number 9 today", because when you use a number people assume it's a major thoroughfare.
