Wait up now... I sense that at some deep, pulpish level--perhaps--he enjoyed the film version.
If only Olbermann's analysis and evaluations were less subtle--& he wore his
'I'm a Master Spy... in My Dreams. "Control" that, American Plebs!' T-shirt.
This film culls & severs the wicked root of any decent fantasy about being a spy: grim, churlish, & insomnia-infected, as if slowly asphyxiated beneath the festering damp of tobacco, the rot of warbling flesh, decades of paranoia... yum. :-)
If you like mission impossible this isn't for you, it is slow, because it's supposed to be. I dont know why so many people say movies are slow? Life is slow, and the movie is moving at the speed of life. It lets you fall into some sort of trance for the time being. If you like a good movie with great actors great story and intrigue...something you can actually invest your time in and feel happy when you get the final package then this is for you. I hope they make the entire trilogy. GET KARLA!ha
Great review!Just love the enthusiasm.....which I share for this marvelous film!Brilliant acting by all....especially Colin Firth's excellent portrayal of Bill Haydon 'on a postage stamp'!
Can't wait to see it. A hugh fan of the BBC series. I'm hoping that if the film is successful, the producers will be motivated to make the trilogy. I'd love to see the 'Honorable Schoolboy' and Smiley's People made int films.
great review, keith.i concur with your assessment of oldham.i've thought of him as a genius actor since his portrayal of sid vicious in 'sid and nancy'.you should review films more often.even older ones.i'd love to hear your take on 'withnail and i'.
Wow, I saw the film a month ago here in UK, I loved it, but I also remebered the TV series, My partner and daughter , both in their late 30's early 40's hated the film," too slow" "like watching paint dry" "nothing happens".. Thiose brought up on James Bond, Mission Impossible, Bourne etc, will find this slow, but my word, it is stunning! Thanks Keith for this, your film review is as good as our Mark Kermode, and you brought your forensic mind to this as you do politics. You could be British!
loved it and the bbc version and agree completely. Even though it's not playing on a constant loop inside my head.
