  • sounds like a cross between a alco/ge locomotive and an non turbo emd

  • Check mine out @ M/V Mississippi . Great machines

  • i love that sound

  • How big is a 3600, ive worked on 3516's a lot but no diesel just landfill gas, also are the injector holes threaded, as on a 3515 i believe the heads are interchangable between diesel and gas.

  • The overhead sounds good. Nice job!

  • Kudos mrcobus...always like watching equipment like this starting.

Air starters always sound awesome and this engine has a nice rhythm to it! LOL

  • God that sounds fucking amazing, This is obviously in the states isn't it?? in the middle of 2nd year plant trade with CAT at the moment and would be so awesome to rebuild these 3600 engines in the future, biggest we get at the workshop are 3516's but 3600's are just something else!!! awesome video by the way!!

  • souding perfect

  • Wats with the 3 rockers arms?

  • @00through09 The center rocker is for the mechanical fuel injector. The other two are intake and exhaust valves.

  • @JGMagoo thanks, i never thought of that.

  • That is so cool, thanks for posting it!

  • 5/5

  • You need to work on Cat's new CM34. Now that is a engine that make the 3600 look like the 3500's

  • I like the for the power, I just hate it that they are metric. But a great engine. At least the natural gas ones

  • souns like locomotive

  • " I love the smell of diesel in the morning"

  • i dont

    ah ok

    *looks at your nick*

  • ^^ya sarcasm, it's pretty harsh actually. :D

Take the quote from the film Apocolypse Now by Col. Kilgore and sub in "Diesel" instead of "Napalm"...lol

  • first we removed all cover to check that there was lubrication, all OK. When we where installing them we decided to make a film about it so we left the last 2 off and started the engine again just for the fun but the lubrication was fine.

  • @mrcobus86 cat 3600 series is my favourite engine , the electronic version of this has come. Anyway are you working with cat dealership too? just to have some exchange.

  • ok, i'm surprised nobody commented on the lack of top end oiling... every cat i've run without rocker covers sprayed oil

  • I commented on this a few months ago.. I received an answer.

He said because this engine was just started, oil had not reached up there yet. It was still cold.

  • How big is this motor?

  • @jbigbike

    Weight aprox : 16 Tons.

    Length about 5 meter.

    Height 3 meters.

    Engine bore 28 cm.

    Engine stroke 32 cm.

  • @mrcobus86

Is this a 1000 hp with 1000 rpm engine ?

  • @mrcobus86 Thats a terrible motor.

  • thats the most badassed diesel sound

  • this is my favorite sound clip on youtube

  • Without rocker covers, I'd think that oil would spray everywhere... Does this engine not pump oil up there?

If so, how are the rockers and valve stems lubricated?

  • Yes the push rods and valve stamps are lubricated by a channel in the rocker and this is lubricated by oil comming out of the rockershaft.

Oil is still cold during the filming engine is just started.

  • 3 Valves?

  • read comments please

    4 valves.

    2 intake

    2 exhaust

    middle for fuel injector.

    grtz

  • Is that true that you can rebuild a cylinder one a the time on those kind of engine? I'm a truck mecanic so I have never seen those kind of engines on trucks.

  • yes, you can pull one head, one liner, and one piston, I have done it way too many times lol. Almost all of the larger diesels have individual heads and inspection covers that allow you to pull power packs individually. These you also have the stretch the rods to get the nuts for the heads and main bearings off. They are pretty cool to work on

  • thanks for the info

  • You can even ear the compressed air starter at the begening of the video

  • tzaca-tzaca! long life caterpilar

  • Man, that CAT sounds like an ALCo 244! =D

  • oh i see thanks for telling

  • No problem! I'm also a Caterpillar Marine service tech (like the owner of this video) and these engines are my passion.

This system is safer in a marine environment, becuase there are no high-pressure fuel lines to burst and create a fuel mist in the ships engine room. All the high pressure is contained within the injector.

There is a set of linkages inside the engine that moves a control rack in each injector to control the amount of fuel.

  • whats the third rocker for

  • Third rocker operates the fuel injector. Each injector is it's own fuel injection pump, and that middle rocker powers it.

  • Thats pretty interesting. How is the fuel metered?

  • The plunger that is pumping the fuel has a spiral groove in the side of it. The spiral groove is in alignment with a port in the barrel of the pumping mechanism. By rotating the plunger in the barrel, the spiral groove passes the "spill port" at a different position of the pump's stroke. There is a control rack that turns a gear on the plunger to control the amount of fuel delivered. The engine can have different options for a governor.

  • (continued) There is a linkage inside the engine that connects the control racks of all injectors to a common shaft. That shaft is connected to the engine's governor actuator. One type governor monitors the engine speed electronically and others use centrifugal force. Either way the governor is moving the linkage and therefore all injectors' control racks.

  • listen to that cat purr...:)

  • very smooth

  • Hej du glade Catidiot du verkar nästan vara som jag employed i pon.trevliga filmer du lägger ut. Kanon mvh cattoken

  • yes that is correct I am a Cat Engineer for Pon Power Netherlands.

  • Nice to find other people than me here work for Pon(sweden)

  • The 3606 Clatterpillars are good but Id rather have a 12L Series 60 DDEC.

  • and what do you have thats better?

  • your crap ollonsvin

  • The 36 series Cats are not particularly old and are not well know for their durability.

  • @87cr250r what makes the engines reputation so bad? just curious.

  • @emeryjk

Injector failures is a big part of it.

  • mechanical art!

one reason I love big old diesel engines is that they are engineered to the max for durability and built from strong metal and can last, literally forever.

I really wish there was a modern brand of car or truck which was engineered and built like the engine you see here.

About the best you can do is put a pre-94 Cummins 12 valve 4BT or 6BT in your vehicle.

Every modern car/truck engine and transmission is a piece of crap by comparison to the quality engine in this video.

  • im not seeing any oil around the tops of those push rods or rockers...

  • excelent engine

  • nice

  • Whats tickover and full speed revs.

  • What happens to them rocker plates if they dont go back excactly wher the came from?

  • few years back I ran into 3612 engine used on the locomovite now that is serious powerhouse IIRC one railroad compay still have it somewhere on west coast in USA oh yeah they are loud on exhaust AKA magic fingers ticking your body due very loud bass exhaust note

  • Three valves per head? One is timed to inlet one exhaust but third?

  • middle one is the fuel injector.

  • Cheers for that! unique?

  • 6773 cu inch.

    111 Liter

  • what is the size of this engine?

  • Bore 11 inch

    Stroke 11,8 inch

    Lenght 158 inch

    Height 110 inch

    Wide 71 inch

    Weight 34,500 LB

  • how many cubic inches or liters?

  • Cool engine! The boat I am stationed on has cat 3608's. Sounds about the same, and air start too!

  • cool vid,, wow 950 rpm, pretty high rpm for this engine size though,,

  • whats that thing installed in if its using an Air starter? Boat? Sounds naturaly asperated too.

  • It`s 1 of 2 engines from a tugboat.

There is quiet a big turbo on it. it runs with 34 psi boost

  • I wonder what would happen if you stuck your finger in there?? :)

  • Stick your finger in there and it "WILL" get ripped OFF

  • Its a 3 valve Triton

  • the 2 outer rockers are for the valves the middle is for the unit injector.

  • that thing sounds awesome

  • runs good like a Cat should, I dyno them at the factory where 3600s are made.

  • you wouldnt happen to have a vid that shows more of the testcell? specially the engine testbed... taylor dyno?

  • this is warm up before dyno test 1640 Kw @ 950 rpm

  • oh and by the way it's a four valve head. the rocker arm presses a valve bridge which then presses the valves.

  • just a test run or warm up for dyno? awesome sound, even better than pielstick

  • 2 valves, the one in the middle is the injector! Nice engine, beautifull sound! :-D

  • 3 valves per cylinder or the middle is for the injector?
