I edit your statement about Miles.

Miles can actually jump higher than Sonic in Sonic 02, similar as to how Luigi can jump higher than Mario in Japanese Super Mario Brothers II for the Famicom.

I also know that in Sonic III, Miles can not only jump higher, but he runs faster than Sonic and Knux (Knuckles) in Competition Mode. :)

I noticed that people commonly say about Tails being able to Spin Dash like Sonic; however if you read the instruction manual for this game you're informed that the Spin Dash is Tails' signature attack and Sonic only learned it from him around the start of the game, likewise Tails learning how to do Sonic's spin attack.

Honestly, I'm a Knuckles fan through and through. That glide ability had me sold since I first played as him.

I do however think that tails is much better than sonic, because in later games he can fly. Other characters get cool abilities. Sonic stays the same.

If you didn't know clement...you can play a coop game with tails and sonic on a one player game by hooking up 2 controllers to the Sega genesis. Then player 2 will play as tails...which is fun to do with friends
