Charlton Heston was at a party where Olivier was telling entertaining stories of his life, and Heston noticed that in every story, Olivier was the butt of the joke, or the one who acted foolishly. He may have been really modest, but Heston took it as a great lesson--"If you've got an audience," said Heston, "never tell stories about how wonderful you are."
Yeah, just before Doppler turns up, I find it very amusing. I think he does a bit of dancing in Oh what a lovely war, but I haven't seen it. According to the biography by Gary Coleman, the story about Ralph Richardson holding Olivier over the balcony in Paris is a fanciful lie!
Ralph Richardson did hold Olivier over a balcony in Paris, but apparently according to Olivier it came out of the blue without warning.Ralph was known for his odd moments of madness though..like the time he let fireworks and bangers off in Oliviers front room..he also managed to completely destroy a front gate as well!:)
Drapes on fire, fine china ornaments smashed, Vivian, in her already frail condition, round the twist with Ralphie and Larry pissing himself laughing! Front gate fucked, too.
Yes, a great story, but don't forget the time too that Richardson was looking at artwork in the Oliviers' attic, lost his balance, and literally fell through their ceiling! And of course one of Richardson's biographers recollected how he would actually *greet* his car before getting in. Sir Ralph was a refreshingly bizarre man (and a great actor too).
I went ahead and looked this up to make sure I got it right. Perhaps "greet" wasn't the best word, but Garry O'Connor recounts that Charlton Heston once recollected seeing Richardson pat the hood/bonnet of his Bentley and say to the car, "Goodbye, old fellow, back in a while." One of my favorite images of RR, though, is of his slow motorbike rides around his neighborhood with his Spanish-speaking parrot, Jose, perched on his shoulder (he didn't want the bird cooped up in the house all the time).
Having a relationship with one's posessions is good - knights used to give thier swords names. It's better than treating them like dead, meaningless matter.
Have you seen "The Bedsitting Room" by any chance? Ralph is hilarious in that film.

HAHA that was in celebration of Vivien Leigh's birthday according to Hugo Vickers. Apparently it caught the drapes on fire and Vivien was livid!

In what manner did Ralph greet his car?

This was a rare treat to see this once again, I thank you for taking the time and trouble to upload it all. Bravo.

A little bit of cakey!! This man isnt grand at all. He has quite a youthful, mischevious sence of humour. His dancing in Sleuth is amazing.

I KNOW! What a darling this man is! Bless him, my favorite actor of all time. I can sit and listen to him talk for hours, that voice!

When did he dance in Sleuth? Is it when he's by himself before Inspector Doppler turns up?

What a man!
