  • Ava-condo... LOL

  • Instead of dumping out all the worms and dirt and scraps, you can push the decomposed material to one side of the bin, and start adding more food and scraps to the other side...the worms will travel to the new food, leaving you with the soil, free of worms, ready to scoop out...and when they've broken down the new side of food, push that all to the side, give them new-NEW food to go to, and do it all over again.

  • We have fatter Worms over here on this side of the Pond.

  • Hello!

Doesn't color ink in paper print have some kind of chemical that you wouldn't want to mix with organic compost?

And I think a lot of paper today is additionally coated with plastic.

  • @rossadew some companies use soy-based ink on their newspaper so it is safe...

  • Awesome!!! I love watching Gran'ma's face. She was like "Oh Boy...whatever".

Kinda like how my husband looks at me when I talk about my garden.

  • Love the shock on Grandma's face!!

  • Your videos are so inspiration and informative. I recommend them to everyone interested in self-sustainable living. We are doing black soldier flies right now, but a worm bin would be fun with little boys in the house, too. Excellent update, Patti :o)

  • Do you keep this bin in your home?

  • soooo informative!

  • Grandma is such a cute hoot! Love that Garden Kid too! A worm bed is my next project, thanks for sharing!

  • hey patti cant you put the worms in the pot with the plant just wondering maybe that would be great for our gardens put some worms under the garden

  • Appreciate the update.

  • LOL your grandma's facial expressions cracked me up! She's like saying..In the house?? Are you all crazy?? lol

It does seem pretty icky to watch..I dont know if I could touch that stuff w/my bare hands..aackk!!

  • Thank you Patti so much, you inspire me with my L.A., Calif. Urban Garden. I get the same response to avocados from my worms. My worm farm grew from less than a pound of worms a a gift from my sister to 4 18 gallon containers in one year. Worm Tea anyone?

  • actually there is not much nutritional value in worm castings. It is more the micro organisms and eco-environment that they provide which helps so much with soil less indoor plants. All plants need that micro eco-environment that worms create... I think you will find a better decomposition rate if you add coffee grounds and basically grind everything up before you put it in. Worms can eat things better if their food is very small.

  • Thanks for the video! Your daughter has so stinking cute and she looks like she stretched up taller since last vid. I have 3 worm bins and can't wait to do the same with mine.

  • I like it, but it is a bit messy. Maybe you want to see what mister tculhane on youtube came up with. He makes a very healthy biological nutrient for the garden, and at the same time he makes methane gas to cook with.

Check Mr. TCULHANE on youtube I am sure you like his concept.

    Happy new year !!!

  • cute...

  • Thanks for the update on how to tell what the castings look like and how to harvest them. Grandma's reactions are great and I really like that you show 3 generations.

  • Grandma is hilarious!!! Love her!

  • I love Grandma's reactions. LOL. Próspero Año Nuevo!

  • i still don't get how to seperate the worms and worm eggs from the castings?

  • @sk8board44 1 popular method is to have multiple tubs that are stacked on top of each other. The base tub has few holes for drainage, while the ones you (eventually)stack on top have holes every 1 to 1.5 in apart. When base tub is full & composted, you stack your next tub on top & put bedding/scraps in 2nd tub--worms will leave castings behind & move into other bin. Patti's using worms' light sensitivity to drive them out of upper layers, then scraping castings away. See Metro-Worm-Condo on YT

  • Happy New Year to Patti and Family! Great vid

  • lol i love the different reactions of the people in this video, thanks so much for sharing! happy new year too!

  • Gigi made the video!!

  • I still don't understand how you did that... but good job. Kudos! Don't know if I would do that.

  • Patti/Garden Kid! Happy New Year.

    Peace

    Gill

  • lol @ the cheesey acting

  • I started a worm bin in July and my red wigglers were tiny little things, now they are huge fat happy munching on my trash

  • i wonder how safe junk mail is to use in composting since some ink is petroleum based. my small town newspaper uses petroleum based ink so i don't put it in the garden.

  • Patti, I think it would have been nice to include just how much of that nutrient rich worm poo you managed to harvest after a year. I'm assuming your bin seen more than the average american household would after a year. Still it would be nice to get an idea of how much results could be expected from doing this.

  • thanks

    lots of fun nice family

my worms are sleeping for the winter now. i guess i need an indoor pit.

ah what the heck i just toss the scraps on the frozen pit figuring it'll all thaw out about the same time.

glad we got some snow on the pit for insulation. winter came too fast this year and i didn't get many leaves on there.

  • ★★★★★

  • Great! Grandma didn't see to like the worms ;)

  • Great video by Patti and family!
