I actually see no purpose in the passenger airbag, the driver's is solely to protect from hitting the steering wheel, but there is nothing to protect for the passenger.
To keep the passenger from hitting the dashboard and windshield. It also serves, to an extent, to keep them from being ejected from the vehicle if they aren't wearing their seatbelt.
@importpunch well it depends. sometimes on the dash there might be things in the way. take for example the 00-06 series chevy trucks. they had a bar on the passenger side. dont wanna be hitting that :P
