How very sad that so many lost their lives because of greed. Through this video those who died will be remembered and honored always. God Bless beautiful WWA.
My father-in-law was from Buffalo Creek, and my husband is proud of his heritage. One of his uncles was actually on the dam half an hour before it failed. One of his aunts still lives in Lorado, last we heard. This disaster is a vital part of his family history that we're already telling our daughters about.
This is a good song and video. They really capture this piece of American and family history!
I moved to Man in 91 and learned about the flood through neighbors who were alive when it had happend so I went over to the library in South Man and did research I was amazed at what had happend, now 20 years later I still get goose bumps when I hear a story from someone who lived through it...Good song
my name is michael gibson my papaw is denny gibson he done a brave thing he was trying to save as much people as he could it is a honor to be is grandson and to know him i am a strip miner now i am trying to pick up and carry on were he left thats how i honor him and my fam i love them so much
Good song. Terrible catastrophe; a tragedy of corporate greed and indifference to human life. The book is a phenomenal read; hard to imagine the callousness of the company, before and especially after the disaster occurred.
Thanks for posting some piece of tragic history that no one outside of those of us who grew up in Coal Country would even remember. I was born 3 years after the flood but remember hearing about it frequently. My father was part of the National Guard response to the flood. God Bless WV!
I lived at Lorado and we heard a truck blowing it's horn and it was a man Named Jack Kent telling us to run for the hills, the dam broke. There ain't know telling how many lives that man saved that day.....God Bless him
My grandmother, Hattie, and my aunt Norma and my two cousins were in it, and almost did not make it, but thank God they got through it. I remember it, and it was horrific!
it was horrible. my dad's parents were in that flood, but they lived. this is my home, Buffalo Creek, West Virginia.
Lorado/Cranco to be exact. i ♥ this state & place. it's beautiful here in the hills of West Virginia. the most beautiful state in the US! almost heaven..
The WV Ad Hoc Commission of Inquiry into the Buffalo Creek Flood said it best in its report:
"The Pittson Company, through its officals, has shown flagrant disreguard for the safety of residence of Buffalo Creek and the other persons who live near coal-refuse impoundments. This attitude appears to be prevalent through-out much of the coal industry."
I, myself, lost family at Buffalo Creek. Family I never got to meet because I wasnt born yet and they were killed before their time along with so many others in the name of coal company greed. They dont care about the people just the money. They killed members of my family, defiled the graves of my ancestors on Cook Mountain, destorying the battlefield where my great grandfather faught for their right to mine coal, and currently cuss and call my friends and family names. Isnt it time for an end?
Thank you for this Video! I am a survivor of the buffalo creek flood. Our family ran out the back door as the flood waters came in the front. We stood on the hill and watched our home lift up, turn 45 degrees and disintegrate. I watched a house with people on the roof screaming and praying float down the creek, so it strikes a note with me. I lost friends neighbors and relatives in that flood and it is still as real today as it was then.
to indyfan22k------- you stupid fuck- nascar was invented by - MOONRUNNERS....!!!!!!. so don't talk about hillbillies -ASSHOLE- as you know shit about nothing.!!!!!!!!!!!. mountain people are hard working damn proud of their heritage and always help those in need - unlike the goverment or mine owners that MURDER to get what they want..........don't fuckin EVER let us find you around here.............
A history we forget at our future peril. The dam that wiped out so many lives was TINY compared to the dirt and rock "dams" Massey has built all over Southern WV.
The Buffalo Creek dam held millions of gallons. The new sludge dams hold BILLIONS of gallons of toxic waste. When (not "if," but WHEN) one of those fails, no less than 998 people will die IMMEDIATELY.
Do something. Stop Mountaintop Removal. Help prevent the NEXT Buffalo Creek Disaster.
MY dad (BONES) was working there the day it happen he was on he way to work and stop at man. He went to work for another company that day. if it wan't for that he would have died. He lost his brother and other family and friend that day.
I was in the Buffalo Creek Flood. My family and I climbed the mountain behind our house and escaped. We just didn't escape the horror of what we saw that day. I still cry when I think back, and I still will not go near a river with a dam in it. Thank you for this tribute to so many of my friends that I lost that day.
great song i have never heard about that before intill my teacher metion it on march 18 2009 this is so horrible my teacher who even lived there but wasn't home when it had happened
i lived in logan the first part of my life, i lived there , in logan when the damn broke, i was in the 7th grade. i will never forget that flood, i saw huge trucks and even homes floating down the river that dreadful day. this is something i will never forget. very beauitful song and video, ty
My Aunt lost her life in the flood...I remember my mother telling me about when my grandfather went in the school (If I remember correctly She said it was the old Man Elementary School they had the bodies in) to Identify her body, She said it was horrific...I give my respect out to the person who made this video and will keep you in my prayer's. God Bless You
I was born in Man in 1948. I was living in Washington DC when the dam broke. It was the first time I had ever heard Man or Buffalo Creek mentioned outside of West Virginia. Still gives me the chills. Great song.
I'm a native of Preston County and this brings back memories of the flood in the 80's in Rowlesburg, my birthplace. Both were tragic. Wanted to comment on the song tho - it's very good as is the performance itself. I am interested to know who you are and if you have done anything with your music.
You should have more respect for this video, this was a horrable event that happen to this people of that town! And this video is a great honoring those 125 people who lost there live and show respect to those families of the lost!
I remember the date that happened. I live in CT now and remember hearing the news. I am originally from Buffalo Creek, a small town called Crown. My sis still lives in WV, in Accoville. Such a tragedy it was.

The same is yet still true today in 2010.

If you think being proud of your roots is a bad thing, maybe you're the one that's got something wrong.
