Using vector shapes to create the variety of shades on Niko's face is incredibly difficult. Drawing something with pen and paper from scratch with no resource but your memory is hard enough and almost impossible with a detailed image such as this. It would be almost impossible to do this with the pen tool without some sort of image to base it on.

Well that makes sense. ALL artistic projects are a complete waste of time by your logic. Everything that is designed starts on paper, from the labels on your food and drink products, to advertisements, posters, banners, menus, even computer icons ! As the user that created this video mentioned he was designing this for a T-Shirt, that really doesn't sound like he had free time on his hands if he was doing it for a job. It sounds like work to me, and practice !
