  • im getting something similiar, antec 900 and the thermalright cooler, any problems fitting those in the case? Im getting a pretty big graphics card so im worried, it's the 295 gtx

  • with the ex38-dq6 gigabyte mobo, I was able to install the heatsink horizontally with room for a fan on the bottom. The antec 900 has that fan on the side that comes close. It really depends on where the CPU socket is on your motherboard. Im sure you will be fine, but Im not 100% sure.

The case can handle a large graphics card and it even comes with a plastic spacer to attach the card to the case towards the front. You will be fine.

  • thanx for the reply, appreciate it.

  • using the e2160, good processor. just starting to overclock. Thanks for the info, Ive been looking into the ultra for a while, i think ill get that when i ramp it up :)

did you lap ur proc though?

  • :)

vid like mine : 1.3250 my rev l2

nice oc what's you temp in load now?

  • I just tested it and its running 32 C idle and 50 C load with fans on low. Whats yours? Whats your board bios settings. Same CPU? OC?

  • mycpu temp high maybe up to 78 per core by orthos

    sometime stable somtime not1.3750 clock:2.9multi:9

    i forget fsb

i think almost pass occt mix 2h test

    but always fail in orthos

i change my cpu hsf to an old model cooler master i think hyper 48 hsf all cooper 4 heatpipes 3400 rpm :) 4rd fan wire but pwm function not working so if i want lower rpm i change to 3pin outpot and change voltage percentage

cooler master about 7'c@3.4rpm less than intel

my case no fans expect one exhust on top

  • Did you have any problems mounting the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme to the Motherboard. I am wanting to know before I go out and buy. Like did everything mount up fine. I have heard some motherboards cant fit the bigger heatsinks because the bridges get in the way.

  • It fit fine, the back heatsink needed to be removed though. There is plenty of room with this motherboard and heatsink. It just depends if your case can fit it.

  • By back heatsink you mean that crazy cool thing right? Was that very difficult or no?

  • Yes, it was the crazy cool heatsink. It was held on by 5 screws. Its not hard to take off. The board comes with extra screws to resecure the NB Heat sink back on.

  • My bad, this is actually the EX38-dq6 board, not just an x38-dq6 board. It is the one that has the energy efficient cooling and down-clocking when the cpu is not using too much resources. The multiplier actually lowers to 6x when idle and raises to 9x when under load. This is WITHOUT any additional programs running. I prefer bare bones systems with as few background tasks as possible.

  • What psu is that what brand?

  • generic rosewill 850watt psu, suits my needs pretty well. Q6600 would be nice though. I went for the e2160 for a budget system that could be robust later. I want to get the 45nm quad some day.

  • The funiest thing is that what for 850 W PSU ?? Your pc takes like 200-250 W in stress.

  • Yup thats true, its not a gaming machine persay but I do video editing on it. I do plan on adding video capture cards and whatever is needed for editing. I didnt want to get a wimpy power supply though. Go all out or go home right? Plus I got that power supply for a great price, no complaints here

  • Check out my updated description to the right of the video for a great review on the thermalright 120 extreme with 6 heatpipes! Its a great comparison to other coolers.

  • Rly nice dude, but, where did u get those other origional antec 900 case fans?

  • I took the front two fans that are near the hard drives and I put them on the heatsink and the side vent. Originally, there is no side fan or fan for the heatsink. I will therefore need to invest in new fans if I want fans at the front. I dont think my hard drives will miss those fans though!

  • yeah i see, i just orderd my 120 ultra extreme with 2 fans, idk why 2, would it make alot of diffrence?

  • 2 fans are unnecessary for the thermalright ultra extreme. You will notice a 1-2 degree difference only when you have your system overclocked. It would be better to have one fan push air through the heatsink out the top or side. You dont need another fan to pull air that is already pushed. I have my 200mm fan on top already so it wouldnt make a difference for me anyways.

  • I think this chip w/ this board can go to 3.6Ghz but it would be unstable and VCore would be way to high, thus CPU life would be short. Highest CPU stability and heat threshold would be 3.2Ghz and still be comfortable as far as heat issues and CPU life goes.

  • I ended up getting the ex38-dq6 version not x38-dq6 and yes 3.2ghz is my current clock and runs like a beauty. It ends up taking about 1.27 v core. But this board could definetly do 4ghz.

  • oh my bad i thought u were using q6600 like me0 cant assume everyoen gets it.

  • whats the difference between the ex38 and the x38?

  • the ex38 is newer but i dont really think there is any difference. The newest bios on the ex38 is only f2 while the x38 is f7.

  • Why is the fan blowing down isnt that reverse from heat rises.

you have a 200mm on top?????

  • The 120mm fan on the bottom of the heatsink pulls the heat up into the 200mm fan. The 200mm fan then pulls it up and out. This configuration acts as a wind tunnel sort of. It pulls in air from the front of the case with 2 120mm fans and from the side fan directly towards the video card. The air then gets sucked up through the heatsink fan and then either through the top or the back fan. BTW, the hard drives are the loudest component of the system.

  • To install my mobo with this heatsink (and any heatsink that has a backplate) you must remove the crazy cool heat spreader. The board comes with extra screws to secure the NB heatsink if you choose to remove the spreader. You should check out anandtech on google

Its a good read. This is the best heatsink of them all I think.

Unfortunately, this heatsink does not come with a fan, you provide one yourself. I like that idea. BTW I lapped my heatsink for temps

  • thanks for the info- i will be getting same mobo and probably same heatsink now. My main concern was to get a good cpu cooler that would allow for the side fan to fit. Also it nice to know nb crazy cool still can be mounted on. Is there any difference between the vertical and horizontal placement of the extreme 120?

  • If you are using the antec 900, the mounting of the heatsink in a horizontal fashion,(such as my video) allows for the side fan to be added. If you mount the heatsink vertical (up and down) it will NOT allow the side fan without modification. For the antec 900, the best solution as far as heat dissipation is the setup that I have with my mobo. I cant say this setup will work with other mobo's though. It is possible depending on other mobo design

  • nice i tracked u down from newegg. realized that i can pop in ur user. Anyway i will be getting this board for sure but was gonnga go with tuniq tower 120 then found out side fan wont fit. Then wanted to get zalman 9700 and now am hearing the heatsink on back wont let it fit or that u have to remove crazy cool for the whole mobo. Is that true? How did u install ur thermalright? Did you need to take any of the mobo heatsinks off? Also is that thermalright extreme come with leds?

  • Thanks for the comment, CPU speed could go much higher, possibly to 3.6Ghz with this mobo. The mobo is everything. This one will overclock and wont even blink. The speed depends on the CPU allowance and heat. The Thermalright is the best on the market for heat. So we will see where it goes and what it will post at. Ive seen people post this CPU with this mobo at 3.2Ghz.

  • nice spes
