dont worry next game they'll just sick lucic on his ass, i bet hartnell will end up worse off than alberts. other than suspensions retaliation in fighting is the best punishment for a cheap shot like that.
allthough my favorite team is the leafs i have to say this was a bad hit. Not dirty because it did not look like he intended to injure and he slowed down, but still... hitting them when they are down?
The Flyers are nothing but a bunch of Thugs and Hooligans. Ed Sputnick should been held accountable. The League or the State or both should invest these type of conducts. What are they waiting for .. for someone to get KILLED. Gary wake up and smell the coffee. Very distasteful organization.
Thats a pretty bold statement, I will always admit the Steve Downie hit was terrible and stupid, but as for all these other unfortunate accidents, the players being hurt are playing stupid!
who goes into the boards that way to get a puck, when a player should use his glove or his foot to make the play. He may not have been asking for it, but the result was something that should be expected when you play an aggressive team such as Philly,
so maybe someone else should smell the coffee, and yes, I mean you
He was fine, he stayed down cause he knew it would draw a penalty. That bitch got boo'd when he got up and deserves it. May some1 should teach boston how to play hockey. Or the flyers will just keep having to show them.
that was an unfortunate hit but i wouldnt categorize it as dirty. the guy went down on his knees and hartnell made a play.. if you watched the game (as i did) you would have seen a hit earlier in the game that was almost identical to the hit on alberts.. BRIERE.. however, got up from the hit. alberts did not. the penalty was not called until it was clear that alberts was hurt. so many more dangerous hits then this. bad call nhl
i know its a full contact sport but the guy was on his knees personally i hate the bruins but still, you dont go all out like that when hes on his knees
they need to make hockey helmets stronger...did you see his helmet sort of collapse in on his head. hockey helmets are pretty flexible. Maybe they should make hockey helmets as strong as football helmets.. Man that would be cool.
as a bruins fan i think that hit was completely cheap. the flyers are a dirty team u saw this earlier in the year when patrice bergeron was hit from brhind by randy jone this is just another undiciplined show of youthfull ness in the flyers organization
just like patrice bergeron, alberts PUT HIMSELF in a vulnerable position, its his own fault....who drops to their knees and plays the puck when it isnt trapped... seriously, scott did the right thing it was either hit alberts or flip over him
I'd also like to just toss in here Hartnell was a dirty player his several years with Nashville too. Last years post-season against the Sharks comes to mind, if you even knew what hockey was last year.
Scott Stevens was perhaps the best defensemen in the NHL. Out of all his boneshattering hits I think he had maybe 3 elbowing calls? You can't bring the cleanest hitter in the game into this argument. And ALL, and that is ALL of his targets were moving towards Stevens and none of them were ever on their knees. GG
Ok... but they were defenseless, which was your earlier arguemnt.
And calling Scott Stevens the cleanest hitter in the game is like calling Marty McSorley a Lady Byng winner. He flashed his elbow or forearm, EVERYTIME. Lindros, Kariya, you name it.
And I'm sure the guy who shot Jason Taylor didn't mean to kill him. It was a dirty hit. You are taught not to hit guys on their knees back in pee wee's. He should not have gone after him in the first place. Why don't you guys just trade for Bertuzzi because I am sure he would fit great on your team.
No one shot Jason Taylor you moron. Wow, that is bs, no one is on their knees. He was finishing a check when a idiot defenseman dropped to his knees, for no reason! He made himself defenseless, that is on him....
No, it was for no reason. He had no reason to drop to his knees. That is not a play that is used in hockey. So if during a play Brett Favre sees a loose fumble and does a handstand to get the ball and some lineman rusn him over, is that cool? He put himself in a defenseless position?
Alberts made an error in judgement. Or he is just a bad player.
it was a dirty hit. enough said. yea, the bruins are starting to be the biggest crybabys. its not JUST THE BRUINS complaining about the flyers this year.
And here's me joining the camp of people who said this was way too intentional - he doesn't try to stop, turn away, put his hand out or anything, he even focuses his body mass to the point of contact, and then he obviously feels the collision but doesn't even look back to examine the damage (i.e. make sure the guy he hit is ok, which should be a basic rule in any sport)...
I dunno about hockey politics, but this was near-fatal.
Near Fatal? Are you serious? Come on... Focusing his body mass? Clearly you have never played hockey...
Make sure the guy is ok?!?!? what is this... It's hockey, you are trying to hurt the other person, that is the name of the game. Take your skirt off nancy.
I agree with you that bodychecking is very much a part of hockey, and that there's no way that hit was "near-fatal".
But I disagree that the object of a bodycheck is to hurt someone. You can bodycheck someone without trying to injure them. A part of a "clean" bodycheck is impeding the player's progress, and limiting their ability to gain posession of the puck.
Dirtbags from Philly? Man you are a well educated piece of work.
I think AS A PHILLY FAN...that the hit was intentional. He deserves more than 2 games. Yes the crazy hits have got to stop. Intent to injure is not allowed in any sport other than Ultimate Fighting. He saw that Alberts was vulnerable(by the video you can clearly see that he saw his position) and he simply took advantage of it. As a player Alberts should be responsible for himself but under this circumstance Hartnell could have stopped and didn't. Another irresponsible play from the Flyers organization cannot be ignored.
So what do you call it when Scott Steven hit's a dude coming across the middle and ends his career? You think that guy isn't vulnerable, you think Steven's doesn't know it. Come on. If you are gonna make an argument like that, you have to take out half the hits in hockey...
Oh well. This jerk-off got a suspension, well worth it, should have been more. Then again, he has to live in Philly, so that scum hole is punishment enough. What a dump of a city. The only reason I would go to Philly is to make myself feel better. Walking around with all it's fat ass, dumb as rocks citizens makes me feel great! Honestly, "Welcome to Philly, we have a bell and Cheesesteaks, and all of the people who live here are fat."
And where are you from? Oh wait, Philadelphia was the birthplace of the country? If it weren't for Philadelphia, you wouldn't get to sit in your log cabin and paw at your sheet with your filthy bestial hands.
It was Bergeron's fault? Are you people retarded? Oh, wait, you're Philly fans, of course you are. Also, Alberts is a defenseman. What is he supposed to do on a hard bouncing puck? Let it go by? He did anything he could to stop the puck, a good play. What is the point of hitting the guy when he is already down anyways? Checking is to take someone out of the play. With Alberts being on his knees, he was already out of the play. No need for the elbow to the head.
how wasnt it bergerons fault...what other hockey player do u know...would hit the brakes at that speed going into the boards with two guys chasing. MO-RON. And Alberts...it was a dump in..you go and get it..if youre gonna stop the puck be prepared to get checked...dont drop to your knees cause u kno someone is gonna be on you. again MO-RON.
Hear is my question, everytime a player has his head down or drops to his knees are other players supposed to not hit him because he is vulnerable? If so, then you have a serious issue in the NHL. What sport is a vulnerable player unhittable? This has never been the case. It's why so much of youth hockey coaching is teaching players how to protect themselves on the ice.
Now the Randy Jones thing was a flukey hit, happens all the time, Bergorn went face first into the boards, unfortunate incident. Hartnell was coming in to finish his check and Alberts, DROPS TO HIS KNEES!!!! Where in the annals of hockey coaching do they teach you to drop to your knees along the boards to stop a puck? No where. Unfortunately Hartnell did not/could not hold up and alberts being a taller man, his head went into the top of the boards.
This is so blown out of proportion. Of the three plays only 2 were not fluke plays, a) Bolerice, b) Downie. Downie is a rookie trying to make the big club, did he leave his feet, yes, was his hit anywhere near as brutal or devastating as the countless hits Scott Stevens laid that ended the careers of among others, Eric Lindros?
its hockey and the flyers. suck it up people what do u expect after a season like last year. Go Flyers! long live the Broad St Bullies. And pretty much this one and the last one were accidents that are part of the sport. too bad boston players are dumb enough to go into the boards like they did and they payed for it. suck it up its hockey!!
well maybe if bostons players decided not to invite death...this wouldnt be happening...bergeron is a moron..i wont even go into that...and who the hell drops to their knees honestly? no way is this a dirty hit...i dont think any player expects someone to drop to their knees like a fag to stop a dump in...quit bitchin. just because other teams aren't as physical as philly doesnt mean we're dirty..just means the rest are pussies
Jag offs??? what are you 10...that pussy needs to learn how to take a hit. dont drop to your fuckin knees to play a puck when theres someone coming to hit you
Yea ok. So then why did his head snap back? It was 4 seconds after he delivered a pass, it was dirty dirty dirty... and worse yet, THERE WAS CLEAR INTENT TO INJUR.
If you think otherwise, you have made your own bed.
What? First of all, we are talking about Karya and Stevens. Second of all, there was NOT "ample" time to stop, and anyone who thinks so has no played hockey.
As for people mentioning all the other incidents in the league, I think they should also be addressed with the same amount of severity as the flyers are getting, individual case-by-case suspensions and fines, but they all need to be more dramatic because 2-4 games is probably a nice personal vacation as a reward for dirty play, not a career threatening warning.
"It appears that Mr. Hartnell was attempting to let up on delivering a check to an opponent that was in a vulnerable position," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell.
Aaaand your point? You just told me I was right. I never putt a time frame on my post. Point is they've always played dirty and probably always will. This is like what, their fourth injury-inducing hit in the season so far, not even a quarter of the way into it? And they had quite a few last year if I recall too. And as far as the irrelevant, he attempted to stop. Very relevant, and if by attempted to stop you mean sped up and aimed his elbow towards the head, yes I agree with you.
The had zero last year actually genius. Go home you are wrong. I never told you you are right.
You can see the ice flying up as he slows down genius. Have you ever delivered a hit on the ice in a hockey game? Guess not by your clear lack of knowledge...
Next time you want to count hits make sure the other guy doesn't know anything. Knuble vs. Shanahan ring a bell just for starters? And have YOU ever delivered a hit in hockey? It was either change direction or ram into the boards face first himself...So no I don't lose. But good try using that aggressive tone as if I would feel threatened.
Takes out? Ok, so now you are saying we are purposely going after these players. Let's look at the list of players that have been hurt, mcammond, kesler, bergeron, alberts. Oh yea, star studded list there. get a clue.
What a disgrace and scumbag...How could one even think to hit someone like that when they're on their knees? It's all right though..The Flyers will get what's coming to them, players are fed up.
what are you kidding me? who the hell gets on their knees to play a puck? learn to stand, then learn to take a hit. this was not a dirty hit it was an accident.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hartnell definitely had time to stop once he could see Alberts was on his knees. It's time for the league to start taking away draft picks and lowering Philadelphia's salary cap.
If the league doesn't start having clear policies about headshots, something bad is about to happen to a player. I think headshot penalies should be tied to the team as well. If one of your player intentionnaly hits another player to the head team gets 50 000$. If second player hits the head, team gets 100 000$. Third strike, team has a 200 000$ penalty and loses first round pick. I mean the NHL has to become serious with those headshot hits...
HAHA take away draft picks and lower their cap. Yea liek that would ever happen. What Ohlund breaking the wilds player leg. Whatn do you think of that. Should they lower their cap now
It is far from team policy. Hartnell tried to stop but had too much momentum to fully stop. It's an unfortunate incident and maybe a 2 game suspension if that.
Are you blind? The hit wasn't from behind. Hartnell slammed on his brakes but couldn't stop. You say the Flyers but only 2 players gave cheapshots from behind. Thats it. Players like Mike Richards and Danny Briere aren't even in that catagory of dirty hits, and neither are Hartnell and Jones.
I can tell that you've never played hockey before, even a mite (you probably never were one, so to clarify, this refers to the youngest age group in youth hockey) could have done a hockey stop in time to have avoided that hit. He did briefly slow down just before hitting him, but Alberts was on his knees way before Hartnell tried to "stop". Plus, even at stand still, driving your hip and arm to the head of a player to force it into the dasher of the boards is still dirty.
I did play hockey and have been playing for a decade. I never said it wasn't dirty. It is and Hartnell does deserve a suspension for it. Not a lengthy one but a 2-4 game one. Alberts went to his knee's just a few seconds before Hartnell hit him not way before like you said.
Hartnell has no history of ever delivering "dirty hits" You are just a moron that has no sence of what the "real" NHL is. And one of many jackass who think they know shit. Please shut up and because you are talking out of your ass. Coach suspended? Why? is he telling the players to put thier selves in bad positions to be hit in?
HA! On-ice fatality. This is the game of hockey, and you keep your head up. I didn't see you whiny little brats saying anything when Scott Stevens deliver vicious elbows to the head of Paul Kariya and Eric Lindros. Did he ever get suspended? Of course not.
In reference to Scott Stevens, it is a little bit absurd to bring that up considering this kind of online discussion wasn't really around back then. And you know what, the league was f'ing it up back then by not suspending him too. Philly fans ought to stop worrying about their worthless players getting suspended and more about the danger Daniel Briere and Mike Richards are in.
How is absurd at all? Back then? 6-8 years ago? of course it was going on. The fact is, i have no problem with Stevens' hits, but they should be put in the same context.
whats up with combining comcast sports net and french announcers?

how wasnt it bergerons fault...what other hockey player do u know...would hit the brakes at that speed going into the boards with two guys chasing. MO-RON. And Alberts...it was a dump in..you go and get it..if youre gonna stop the puck be prepared to get checked...dont drop to your knees cause u kno someone is gonna be on you. again MO-RON.

Thats a good example of a Governmental hit on the already kneeling citizen. Vote Ron Paul!

Hear is my question, everytime a player has his head down or drops to his knees are other players supposed to not hit him because he is vulnerable? If so, then you have a serious issue in the NHL. What sport is a vulnerable player unhittable? This has never been the case. It's why so much of youth hockey coaching is teaching players how to protect themselves on the ice.
msquints19 4 years ago 5
Now the Randy Jones thing was a flukey hit, happens all the time, Bergorn went face first into the boards, unfortunate incident. Hartnell was coming in to finish his check and Alberts, DROPS TO HIS KNEES!!!! Where in the annals of hockey coaching do they teach you to drop to your knees along the boards to stop a puck? No where. Unfortunately Hartnell did not/could not hold up and alberts being a taller man, his head went into the top of the boards.
msquints19 4 years ago 4
This is so blown out of proportion. Of the three plays only 2 were not fluke plays, a) Bolerice, b) Downie. Downie is a rookie trying to make the big club, did he leave his feet, yes, was his hit anywhere near as brutal or devastating as the countless hits Scott Stevens laid that ended the careers of among others, Eric Lindros?

its hockey and the flyers. suck it up people what do u expect after a season like last year. Go Flyers! long live the Broad St Bullies. And pretty much this one and the last one were accidents that are part of the sport. too bad boston players are dumb enough to go into the boards like they did and they payed for it. suck it up its hockey!!
lowthburger 4 years ago 2
well maybe if bostons players decided not to invite death...this wouldnt be happening...bergeron is a moron..i wont even go into that...and who the hell drops to their knees honestly? no way is this a dirty hit...i dont think any player expects someone to drop to their knees like a fag to stop a dump in...quit bitchin. just because other teams aren't as physical as philly doesnt mean we're dirty..just means the rest are pussies
charliemonzo 4 years ago 2
Jag offs??? what are you 10...that pussy needs to learn how to take a hit. dont drop to your fuckin knees to play a puck when theres someone coming to hit you
Vernig777 4 years ago
msquints19 seriously shut up...that hit on karyia was clean...absoultly no elbow.
l8duf6y36 4 years ago
Yea ok. So then why did his head snap back? It was 4 seconds after he delivered a pass, it was dirty dirty dirty... and worse yet, THERE WAS CLEAR INTENT TO INJUR.
If you think otherwise, you have made your own bed.
msquints19 4 years ago
Im just saying, there was ample time to stop, a five year old could stop in time right there
Carouselzero 4 years ago
What? First of all, we are talking about Karya and Stevens. Second of all, there was NOT "ample" time to stop, and anyone who thinks so has no played hockey.
msquints19 4 years ago
Filthadelphia is by far the dirtiest team in the NHL and is pure scum. Your city is just as dirty as your hockey team. Jag offs.
DubelA1323 4 years ago
i didnt know the nhl gave suspensions for accidents nice call colin ya dumbass
letsgoflyers48 4 years ago 3
As for people mentioning all the other incidents in the league, I think they should also be addressed with the same amount of severity as the flyers are getting, individual case-by-case suspensions and fines, but they all need to be more dramatic because 2-4 games is probably a nice personal vacation as a reward for dirty play, not a career threatening warning.
rmarsche 4 years ago
"It appears that Mr. Hartnell was attempting to let up on delivering a check to an opponent that was in a vulnerable position," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell.
Thank you and good night.
msquints19 4 years ago 3
yet, he still followed through with the hit.
your welcome and sweet dreams.
l8duf6y36 4 years ago
Irrelevant. He attempted to stop. Go home loser.
msquints19 4 years ago
Aaaand your point? You just told me I was right. I never putt a time frame on my post. Point is they've always played dirty and probably always will. This is like what, their fourth injury-inducing hit in the season so far, not even a quarter of the way into it? And they had quite a few last year if I recall too. And as far as the irrelevant, he attempted to stop. Very relevant, and if by attempted to stop you mean sped up and aimed his elbow towards the head, yes I agree with you.
thecheat714 4 years ago
The had zero last year actually genius. Go home you are wrong. I never told you you are right.
You can see the ice flying up as he slows down genius. Have you ever delivered a hit on the ice in a hockey game? Guess not by your clear lack of knowledge...
done and done. you lose.
msquints19 4 years ago
Next time you want to count hits make sure the other guy doesn't know anything. Knuble vs. Shanahan ring a bell just for starters? And have YOU ever delivered a hit in hockey? It was either change direction or ram into the boards face first himself...So no I don't lose. But good try using that aggressive tone as if I would feel threatened.
thecheat714 4 years ago
you see the ice fly up because his skates are going in transistion to get better body position and he clearly follows through.
l8duf6y36 3 years ago
Just remember that when someone takes out Briere.
Alkeoholic77 4 years ago
Takes out? Ok, so now you are saying we are purposely going after these players. Let's look at the list of players that have been hurt, mcammond, kesler, bergeron, alberts. Oh yea, star studded list there. get a clue.
msquints19 4 years ago
What a disgrace and scumbag...How could one even think to hit someone like that when they're on their knees? It's all right though..The Flyers will get what's coming to them, players are fed up.
Carouselzero 4 years ago
Because that is the game of hockey. Ask Don Cherry, ask other players around the league.
msquints19 4 years ago 5
what are you kidding me? who the hell gets on their knees to play a puck? learn to stand, then learn to take a hit. this was not a dirty hit it was an accident.
samXcor3 4 years ago 3
What about some of theese other hits that are just if not worse than that hit? Where are are all you bitching then?
spunkiemaster 4 years ago 3
what Ohlunds hit on the wild player. Should they lose picks and get their cap lowered.
Hack22 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Hartnell definitely had time to stop once he could see Alberts was on his knees. It's time for the league to start taking away draft picks and lowering Philadelphia's salary cap.
countcrow4 4 years ago
If the league doesn't start having clear policies about headshots, something bad is about to happen to a player. I think headshot penalies should be tied to the team as well. If one of your player intentionnaly hits another player to the head team gets 50 000$. If second player hits the head, team gets 100 000$. Third strike, team has a 200 000$ penalty and loses first round pick. I mean the NHL has to become serious with those headshot hits...
Sorry for my english I'm a frenchy Habs fan :)
Aguichant 4 years ago
HAHA take away draft picks and lower their cap. Yea liek that would ever happen. What Ohlund breaking the wilds player leg. Whatn do you think of that. Should they lower their cap now

I didn't have the chance to see it!!
That's a unfair hit... once again... Alberts is on knees

msquints19 4 years ago
Another scumbag hit from a scumbag player on a scumbag team. Way to go, Flyers. The NHL could soon be looking at its first on-ice fatality.
That coach should be suspended, as this is obviously "team policy."
Gooblyjanks 4 years ago
It is far from team policy. Hartnell tried to stop but had too much momentum to fully stop. It's an unfortunate incident and maybe a 2 game suspension if that.
joeyzaine111 4 years ago
bullshit he had enough time to stop its just that the flyers like to give cheap shots from behind
bendover20074922 4 years ago
Are you blind? The hit wasn't from behind. Hartnell slammed on his brakes but couldn't stop. You say the Flyers but only 2 players gave cheapshots from behind. Thats it. Players like Mike Richards and Danny Briere aren't even in that catagory of dirty hits, and neither are Hartnell and Jones.
joeyzaine111 4 years ago
I can tell that you've never played hockey before, even a mite (you probably never were one, so to clarify, this refers to the youngest age group in youth hockey) could have done a hockey stop in time to have avoided that hit. He did briefly slow down just before hitting him, but Alberts was on his knees way before Hartnell tried to "stop". Plus, even at stand still, driving your hip and arm to the head of a player to force it into the dasher of the boards is still dirty.
rmarsche 4 years ago
I did play hockey and have been playing for a decade. I never said it wasn't dirty. It is and Hartnell does deserve a suspension for it. Not a lengthy one but a 2-4 game one. Alberts went to his knee's just a few seconds before Hartnell hit him not way before like you said.
joeyzaine111 4 years ago
Hartnell has no history of ever delivering "dirty hits" You are just a moron that has no sence of what the "real" NHL is. And one of many jackass who think they know shit. Please shut up and because you are talking out of your ass. Coach suspended? Why? is he telling the players to put thier selves in bad positions to be hit in?
spunkiemaster 4 years ago
HA! On-ice fatality. This is the game of hockey, and you keep your head up. I didn't see you whiny little brats saying anything when Scott Stevens deliver vicious elbows to the head of Paul Kariya and Eric Lindros. Did he ever get suspended? Of course not.
msquints19 4 years ago
In reference to Scott Stevens, it is a little bit absurd to bring that up considering this kind of online discussion wasn't really around back then. And you know what, the league was f'ing it up back then by not suspending him too. Philly fans ought to stop worrying about their worthless players getting suspended and more about the danger Daniel Briere and Mike Richards are in.
rmarsche 4 years ago
How is absurd at all? Back then? 6-8 years ago? of course it was going on. The fact is, i have no problem with Stevens' hits, but they should be put in the same context.
