I've been going through your videos in the last two days and I just have to say that you are such an inspiration. I'm a teacher in Sweden and I work with kids in the AS spectrum (along with ADD/ADHD) and this gives me so much insight. I love your attitude about your own situation and it's so fantastic that you explain it so well and with so much insight. I hope you're having a good day :)
I don't necessarily agree with "Asperger's Syndrome".
Asperger's Syndrome does not affect sufferer's periodically. It is an on going condition.
You seem psychologically overwhelmed.
All people experience some instance of this.
I've seen in your previous videos that you have extremely sensitive 'input sensors'.
Being a condition that affects the central nervous system, it seems stress is also something your body is sensitive to, which would explain your semi-responsive state.
@JLXOutlaw Aspergers syndrome does not effect me periodically, its who I am at all times, what you see here is the effect of suppressed tics overwhelming me knocking out my abilities to walk around freely and communicate effectively. It doesn't do to over think this
That's interesting, I can understand HIGH functioning then.
Poor collaboration of words on my part
I was UNDER thinking! ;-)
Why are you affected so intensely and for such a long period of time?
You wouldn't say Asperger's is to take the majority of the blame would you? You seem to be in an autistic state, but that doesn't seem to be the antagonist.
Your suppression of ticks (over time?) triggered this specific episode, right?
@JLXOutlaw yes, my suppression of tics over a given time causes these episodes. However If i choose not to suppress tics over time, then episode is not so severe.
@TheMainMeal Okay, this one actually got me. The rest of your videos have me rolling hysterically because I understand that you're putting them out for the world to see and embracing your affliction and making the best of it. But this video actually made me realize the struggles you go through. I still laughed at certain points, but to see the absolute frustration you're experiencing, and the look in your eyes while you're trying to communicate...that sucks. You kick ass Guy!
I didn't laugh at any point. My main focus is on how your wife reacts to you, and man do i admire her. It can't be easy seeing someone you love being in that state, but she handles it beautifully. I know she's seen it before, but still. She has my respect and admiration.

How often does these sort of episodes happen, because I remember you done a diary over a few months and figured out how many tic days in a month; so was this form of tic day in the calculations
@som8484 this tic day was in the calculations, I can't always predict how the tics will manifest on the tic day. Sometimes I can communicate sometimes I can't, its a bit unpredictable.
Man, seeing you in that state was kind of scary. I'm assuming it's terribly unpleasant for you?
Can you control your arms just fine (mostly) even though you can't speak properly? Or has your brain kind of shut down and you aren't really 100% conscious?
Thanks for sharing this stuff. It teaches us more about your condition.
This video is very informative and interesting, I didnt realise that there could be episodes of different states and capabilities of communicating. You cope with it extremely well and I hope that people watching this find it as useful to understand a small part the autism spectrum more.
Just out of interest, what do your days normally consist of? Apart from your karaoke of course (which, by the way, are incredible!)
Thank you for giving us an insight into your life, you are a true inspiration.
The best to you, your wife and your family. These video's are so moving, I wish I could help you in anyway possible. You are a true inspiration and a fantastic person and I hope the future brings nothing but good for you and your family.
I can't imagine what it would be like to have to deal with that on a regular basis. have a mild form of epilepsy [just absence seizures, not the twitchy ones] that are followed by 10-60 minute bouts of aphasia, periods where I lose all knowledge of language, written or spoken, English or any other. I play Magic the Gathering, so I have some cards lying about. In that non-communicative state, it helps to use those to communice. You might want to try something similar. Much luck man!
@mcklucker17 I can limit these episodes by reducing my contact with the outside world, I think I am programmed to be a hermit, but that annoy's the fuck out of me, so I fight it...I like your card idea, I am fortunate that my wife more or less knows what I want without me having to do verbal gymnastics to get it. I would never attenpt to engage anybody other than my wife when I am in these states.
When you say you're "still in there", what do you mean? I'm taking it to mean that you are 'trapped' inside what is happening, fully aware, but unable cross access your speech and motor functions properly.
I found myself to be very moved during this clip. I marvel at the way both you and your wife cope with this terrible affliction and I have nothing but total admiration for you both!
Linked to this vid via one of the many karaoke renditions available on YouTube & quite honestly i felt the need to say something, but find myself lost for words. Although you don't need it, or probably even want it, you & your good lady have my sincerest admiration for how you choose to tackle these conditions. I hope that doesn't come across sycophantic in any way, but watching this has genuinely left me somewhat dumbstruck..... & i mean that in a very positive way. Kudos to you, matey :)
My question is in relation to your sleeping patterns.
It appears tics are impeding your sleep. Is that something you address through medication? Or do these episodes pass and then allow you to sleep through the night?
@AdamoMoreno sleeping has never been a problem, I am usually relaxed of an evening when all the sensory stimulous has disappeared...Unless of course I am experiencing my cycle tics, then I have to let them pass before I go to sleep
Kudos to your wife for being so supportive and strong. I've heard that food allergies can contribute. If you haven't already looked into, might be worth a try.
Breaks my heart in a way . you seem to be a very bright and brave man to put your videos up here- and I mean that positively. I see you struggle to get the words out and communicate with your wife. Can only imagine how that would feel like...Must b so hard for both of you. Love concers all.
@panthercat38 when I am in the car and the tics strike, i need to listen to heavy metal at a very high volume in order to stave the tics off...Soft music and physical contact are an irritation...
I was watching so intently the entire time that when the music came on it totally caught me off guard and I laughed my ass off. Brilliant sense of humor! :)
This video helped me understand some things. My son has moderate autism and when he gets frustrated or angry...he babbles nonsensically. He can relay his needs pretty well, but in a basic way and he parrots. When he gets mad he babbles this language. He's probably like you. What he's saying makes sense in his mind, but it doesn't come out to us.
While this attack is going on, does your brain and thoughts function normally ? Are you in control of your thoughts, or are you also "ticcin" inside ?
I am used to it now...I've always been quite 'hard', i mean my idea of a relaxing massage is my wife standing on my back and walking up and down on it...anything less just irritates...
I do not tic all the time, if i do tic at night, i sleep downstairs..so as to not disturb her...I have 3 kids, they are used to the tics and do not respond at all...well, thats not true, they laugh at some of the funnier tics..it has warped their sense of humour somewhat...
Hey mate, I have mild/borderline AS and have been doing lots of research regarding the topic.
My mates consider me normal, 2 of them also have AS/HFA and ironically they're the only ones who can see through me.
Have you tried going on a gluten/casein free diet? Basically in autistics it has an opiate effect on our brains and makes us stoned, I didn't know this until a month after the diet.
Also get tested for mercury poisoning, this is basically the cause of you don't have fragile x.
I can't imagine surviving on a gluten/casein free diet...I hate food and eating, if i could just take a pill and be full up i would...As far as mercury poisoning is concerned, autism runs strong in my family...so its more likely to be genetic....Its an odd thing but AS/HFA folk seem to get each other immediately..
@TheMainMeal: I'm Aspie too, so I'm not going to even touch the food sensitivities thing (*special topic* alert!), but I agree that it's genetic, & that we seem to understand each other just fine. Don't know if this is useful info or not, but I get all aphasic & stimmy &etc when I'm having a migraine -- most doctors don't realise that there's such a thing as "migraine without headache", so I probably wouldn't have figured it out if I didn't also get normal migraines & migraine-type fibromyalgia.
@JustAnotherAmy Hello pleased to meet you, i've never thought to describe the hyperactive senses as a migraine without the headache, it is a very accurate analogy, I am currently experiencing this daily as my children are home, so its dark glasses with blinkers, earplugs and extra anxiety tablets everyday now, i have basically ceased to function!!...
@TheMainMeal: I just googled, and apparently people with tourettes are 4 times more likely than the general population to get migraines? Magnesium supplements can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines -- I need to balance mine with some potassium and calcium or I get muscle cramping, but it does help keep the stimmy-aphasic days at bay. Might be worth a try?
@JustAnotherAmy yes i think i will give magnesium supplements a try, can't really hurt...I do not suffer the classic migraine with headache ( unless i've been out on the raz! ) , you would call light sensitivity, movement sensitivity, sound sensitivity all symptoms of migraine?
@TheMainMeal: Yes, those can all be symptoms of a migraine -- and of other things, but as magnesium is pretty harmless (unless one goes totally nuts with it!) it shouldn't do any harm to try. It's a common misconception that migraine is a type of headache, but migraines are actually a neurological disease with a wide range of possible symptoms, and headaches are just one of them.

I didn't know til tonight that Autism and Tourettes could be linked in some cases. Holy God. What a double whammy. Tho, definitely distinct entities for you, yes? The inability to communicate during these episodes is NOT about increased tics as much as whatever the shutdown is. As you say, sensory overload and new situations will cause more tics, but, for you, not automatically these episodes.
Yes, as others have said, your intelligence and wit are always obvious.
Hi i think it's great that you're sharing this with everyone! i also have adhd but when i saw this video i realised that my condition is'nt that bad as i always think. have some tiks and spastic reactions. I also get stressed out fast, but i'm not able to say what's bothering me, couse i think i would be over reacting. But sooner or later it HAS to come out and then it turns out much worse.. But hey! thanks for making me realise im ok! and thank god for writing! and typing.. :)
i was not long up, so as I am utterly crap in the morning as far as thinking goes, I was my usual fuzzy self, in a reasonably good mood, this state was not triggered by sensory input or a depressed or anxious state it just comes regularly...
I only really get as bad as this when the kids are off from school and they spend alot of time in the house..other than that, houseguests trigger an episode like this...
Thanks for the video Bob. Just didn't catch your name so Bob seemed appropriate, since that's what you are doing, bobbing. :-) I am happy you posted this video and its nice to meet you. I am HFA but I have about 3 sessions like yours in my life. I know how bloody smart you are. You just need tools. If you had the tools then you would have some of the control I have. Only 2 problems I see you have and one is that cheap haircut, highly fixable, the next you're English, sorry about that one matey.
me again, you have made me understand my son more, he claps all the time and blows at the same time which drives me mad, now i know he has a tic. i always have sounded like i am trying to clear my throat. maybe i have a tic. i was watching a link to tourettes guy, came across you. so mate thanks for being so honest about your condition. my wife is lovely and patient just like yours. we are both blessed. mixie
i just think you're super intelligent.. and attractive =) i find your quirks interesting. i have asperger's..and although it has it's disadvantages, i wouldn't change myself. you express yourself better than many people who don't have any communicative problems.
there is 'deep brain stimulation' but it looks very dodgy to me, i mean you don't hear of how the patient then carries on with life, how his marriege is, how his sex ..better the devil you know as far as I am concerned...thanks for the comment though..
wow. i have asperger's and been recently diagnosed with tourettes as well. but my tourettes is no way as severe as yours. i wish u all the best in life, you'll be in my prayers and i hope a cure will be found soon for u.
The medication serves to reduce anxiety only, i have not found ts medication that works in a way that makes my life easier or better...The meds I do take have an added bonus of staving off depression.
I am like this and sometimes worse on average every 3 to 4 days, mind you lately they have become more unpredictable, I have been like it for a few hours every day for about 8 days, then I have had a 6 day break before the next episode....There are tics but tics is not the entirety of what is going on , I think it relates to the autism and perhaps a sensory threshold being reached and I shut down ...but who really knows..
your wife must be an incredible woman. i assume its her thats filming. what was it like when she first met you and how does this sort of thing affect dating?
When i met my wife my tourettes was not like it is today, i was just a very manic, hyper individual. I would have 'breakdowns' every 6 months or so, which closely resembled a seizure with lots of spasms thrown in for good measure..Sex and sexual thoughts reduce anxiety which in turn reduce tics, so as far as dating is concerned it was never an issue..
I have to agree with allcingiboston...how exhausting it must be every time, good looks and humor too though. My love to you and your wife, I am happy to have such a cool friend. You haven't forgotten me have you? :(
I am thankful for you putting this out. How exhausting is it when the bad cycle runs all day.. I cannot imagine. And, I love your humors and you are one good looking fella, too. You two are the champions. ;)
As I understand it, studies have shown that Autism, Asperger's, and Tourettes have similarities in brain scans, so there are certain similar brain activities occurring, and thus, there can be similar overlapping behaviors in all three of these conditions.
Hey! I thought know you a little from your videos and never realised that you could have these kind of 'bad' moments.. Hope you were okay quick Thanks for sharing this, oke see you xoxo Jane
You do seem rather witty, well spoken and friendly, beneath the tics as your comments and speech bubbles convey. Thank you for sharing, you've given me a much better understanding of my own cousins condition, he has quite severe aspergers. He'd probably come under "low functioning" if he was classified, however I feel I can relate better to him than alot of people. Your videos help me in many ways, aleviating many of my fears. Your fortitude and good humour are refreshing and welcome. Take care
studying being the key word it would seem: still very much learning, education ongoing, in pursuit of knowledge rather than knowledgeable, etc etc think you can see where I'm going with that one. You be careful now, would seem that you might just be a nightmare 'professional' in the making.
Studying as in, SMARTER ABOUT SAID SUBJECT THAN YOU. How pathetic are your claims that I will be a 'nightmare professional', because in the end, you will be the one paying me thousands of dollars to tell you that your life sucks.
I have never seen such disturbing garbage come from one persons mouth. There is no need for such childish, digusting replies. I am ashamed to be the age same.
Shutdowns can be very dangerous if they are in the wrong place and at the wrong time. They deserve more attention than they currently receive from proffesionals.
Did you get combined or prolonged sensory overload? That is what triggers them off for me, although I don't feel comfortable comparing them to what my cousin must go through permanently. :(
I admire your bravado in deciding to share this with others. :)
I have AS and experience shutdowns where I find it very difficult to communicate or talk to anyone. Decision making and doing anything much at all isn't usually an option either since I pretty much space out. Nothing as troublesome (or tiring by the looks of it!) as what you experience I'm sure. Though I do relate to the fact that people have some days were they're higher or lower functioning than others.
I've been going through your videos in the last two days and I just have to say that you are such an inspiration. I'm a teacher in Sweden and I work with kids in the AS spectrum (along with ADD/ADHD) and this gives me so much insight. @som8484 this tic day was in the calculations, I can't always predict how the tics will manifest on the tic day. Sometimes I can communicate sometimes I can't, its a bit unpredictable.

is it the camera that's stressing you there? are you ever completely ok with your wife? or only when you are alone in a dark room?
analphabet118 1 year ago
@analphabet118 no, this was just a due tic day, camera had no effect, however when I record a video on a non tic day, the camera brings them on.

It teaches us more about your condition.
bubbah 1 year ago
This video is very informative and interesting, I didnt realise that there could be episodes of different states and capabilities of communicating. You cope with it extremely well and I hope that people watching this find it as useful to understand a small part the autism spectrum more.
Just out of interest, what do your days normally consist of? Apart from your karaoke of course (which, by the way, are incredible!)
Thank you for giving us an insight into your life, you are a true inspiration.

Much luck man!
mcklucker17 1 year ago
@mcklucker17 I can limit these episodes by reducing my contact with the outside world, I think I am programmed to be a hermit, but that annoy's the fuck out of me, so I fight it...I like your card idea, I am fortunate that my wife more or less knows what I want without me having to do verbal gymnastics to get it. I would never attenpt to engage anybody other than my wife when I am in these states.
TheMainMeal 1 year ago
When you say you're "still in there", what do you mean? I'm taking it to mean that you are 'trapped' inside what is happening, fully aware, but unable cross access your speech and motor functions properly.
Thanks for uploading this, by the way.
Cranberryshortbread 1 year ago
@Cranberryshortbread That's exactly what I mean, it is always a fear of mine to get trapped in that state.

@TheMainMeal I can understand that fear. I can't comprehend what it feels like, but I can definitely understand it.

AdamoMoreno 1 year ago
@AdamoMoreno sleeping has never been a problem, I am usually relaxed of an evening when all the sensory stimulous has disappeared...Unless of course I am experiencing my cycle tics, then I have to let them pass before I go to sleep

What does music or contact do when you are in that state? Do you find it comforting or is any outside stimulation annoying?
panthercat38 1 year ago
@panthercat38 when I am in the car and the tics strike, i need to listen to heavy metal at a very high volume in order to stave the tics off...Soft music and physical contact are an irritation...

TheMainMeal 1 year ago
Hey mate, I have mild/borderline AS and have been doing lots of research regarding the topic.
My mates consider me normal, 2 of them also have AS/HFA and ironically they're the only ones who can see through me.
Have you tried going on a gluten/casein free diet? Basically in autistics it has an opiate effect on our brains and makes us stoned, I didn't know this until a month after the diet.
Also get tested for mercury poisoning, this is basically the cause of you don't have fragile x.
illavitar 1 year ago
I can't imagine surviving on a gluten/casein free diet...I hate food and eating, if i could just take a pill and be full up i would...As far as mercury poisoning is concerned, autism runs strong in my family...so its more likely to be genetic....Its an odd thing but AS/HFA folk seem to get each other immediately..
TheMainMeal 1 year ago
@TheMainMeal: I'm Aspie too, so I'm not going to even touch the food sensitivities thing (*special topic* alert!), but I agree that it's genetic, & that we seem to understand each other just fine. Don't know if this is useful info or not, but I get all aphasic & stimmy &etc when I'm having a migraine -- most doctors don't realise that there's such a thing as "migraine without headache", so I probably wouldn't have figured it out if I didn't also get normal migraines & migraine-type fibromyalgia.
JustAnotherAmy 1 year ago
@JustAnotherAmy Hello pleased to meet you, i've never thought to describe the hyperactive senses as a migraine without the headache, it is a very accurate analogy, I am currently experiencing this daily as my children are home, so its dark glasses with blinkers, earplugs and extra anxiety tablets everyday now, i have basically ceased to function!!...
TheMainMeal 1 year ago
@TheMainMeal: I just googled, and apparently people with tourettes are 4 times more likely than the general population to get migraines? Magnesium supplements can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines -- I need to balance mine with some potassium and calcium or I get muscle cramping, but it does help keep the stimmy-aphasic days at bay. Might be worth a try?
JustAnotherAmy 1 year ago
@JustAnotherAmy yes i think i will give magnesium supplements a try, can't really hurt...I do not suffer the classic migraine with headache ( unless i've been out on the raz! ) , you would call light sensitivity, movement sensitivity, sound sensitivity all symptoms of migraine?
TheMainMeal 1 year ago

Thank you for this.

Daxmcneil377 2 years ago
i was not long up, so as I am utterly crap in the morning as far as thinking goes, I was my usual fuzzy self, in a reasonably good mood, this state was not triggered by sensory input or a depressed or anxious state it just comes regularly...

I am like this and sometimes worse on average every 3 to 4 days, mind you lately they have become more unpredictable, I have been like it for a few hours every day for about 8 days, then I have had a 6 day break before the next episode....There are tics but tics is not the entirety of what is going on , I think it relates to the autism and perhaps a sensory threshold being reached and I shut down ...but who really knows..

heebiejeevies 2 years ago
When i met my wife my tourettes was not like it is today, i was just a very manic, hyper individual. I would have 'breakdowns' every 6 months or so, which closely resembled a seizure with lots of spasms thrown in for good measure..Sex and sexual thoughts reduce anxiety which in turn reduce tics, so as far as dating is concerned it was never an issue..

As I understand it, studies have shown that Autism, Asperger's, and Tourettes have similarities in brain scans, so there are certain similar brain activities occurring, and thus, there can be similar overlapping behaviors in all three of these conditions.

Jjavanoid 2 years ago
My 'session' comes every 3 to 4 days, independant of sensory overload..When I do get sensory overload I tic more ..
