  • how did you make the molds? great work btw magna looks mint.

  • cool man

  • Can I use plywood to make a mold for fiberglass? If so, how do I prevent the fiberglass from sticking to the plywood? Thanks!

  • @tasmania105 wax the shit out of the plywood!

  • OK, Im super newb at this. I want to delete my side mirrors and create a small case for cameras in its place. How would I go about doing that. I mean can I use cardboard to get the shapes I want, kinda like a mold? Because I need to be able to break the mold down from the inside out.

  • What purpose does the gelcoat serve? I'm new to the process and just curious.

  • @monroezzz Enshures a smooth texture free surface upon which you would paint, or you could get a gell coat in whatever color you wanted and then youd have no need to paint afterwards. I belive one could also just use a layer of resin, let it harded to the point of tacky, then apply a few layers of fiber glass to that. youd achive a smooth texture free surface but id would look ugly as hell till you painted it

  • hey man just wondering were you get your fiberglass supplies from?

  • Hey, good hands. Thanks for the class.

  • nice work bro... i have front lip in my car right now (figerglass) and i wanted to make a copy of it .. just like how you did yours ,but the problem is i dont have a mold... can i use my existing front lip as a mold..??? can you give me some pointers or tips to how i start this project.. thanks alot man..

  • Awesome tutorial, Thanks! Learned a hell of a lot.

  • Excellent video man! Learned alot, wish there were more.. Got any free time.. lol I am waiting to make my piece, my mold is ready to spray, but I can not find a gun to spray gel coat... Every one I asked gave me different suggestions and no one knows what a CLEANING GUN is, is that an undercoating gun? Why is that cheaper? Any help would be highly appreciated...

  • hey can i use fiberglass to make a mold for fiberglass so a fiberglass mold for a fiberglass item

  • @TheSaltysack Yes, no problem.

  • @TheSaltysack Yo dawg i heard you like fiberglass...

  • @wertyq95 so we installed fiberglass in your fiberglass so you can fiberglass while you fiberglass haha

  • @TheSaltysack

    Fiberglass?

  • Never mind, i see the other cup you showed in the video, it is just a cleaning gun that you buy and not something that was built, did you modify it at all?

  • @TEAMSCREAM12 No modification, just used a mix cup instead of the stock tin reseviour.

  • It would be really cool of you to really tell us how you made that gelcoat gun, or atleast some better pics of it, i have searched the web and havnt found anything like it.

big props to you man, i just finished my first big mold and now I would like to get some nice quality gelcoated parts out of it.

  • Hi mate great vid. What i'm after is making a mould of my motorbike fairings. I have the originals so i can use those as a plug, just making sure to use the male side rather than the female? Is that right? Also because of the paint work on the original part how thick (or layers) should the glass be? Many thanks mate

  • @actiondan08 Yes, male side with the finished surface. To be clear you make the negative tooling mold first, then the replica part. No need to go overboard with the layers, a few layers for the mold and a few for the part. This has nothing to do with the paint. Remember to flange the parts and use two release agents to make the mold. Goos luck mate.

  • awesome. I cant wait to try and make something!!!

  • so did you cut the edges?

  • what is the second song? ... screeching weasle?............... oh millencollin i saw the end of the vid ...cool

  • Love it. Thanks so much for sharing this video!!! :)

  • Do I need a prototype so I can mold one?I mean I would like to make fairings for my motorcycle like the yamaha R6 fairings. I just dont know how to mold one. Do I need to have the original fairings of R6? Cuz its kinda impossible for me to get one.

  • nice ,

can u give me tha name of tha tols u have !?

    ^_^ c ya

  • SWEET

  • Way to work with fiberglass and not use gloves

  • trim the edges a few hours into drying, it will be a lot cleaner

  • hey dude i have a 1979 camaro and i want to create a mold for my center console because i dont want to pay 400 bucks for one.. i was wondering if something like this would work? and where can i buy the polyvinyl?

  • What did you use for release agent ?

  • Hi - Can wood be used as a mould - Thanks.

  • what was the blue liquid after the gel coat?

  • whats the brand of the gel coat and fiberglass resin you use?

  • ok so now i know how to make the posetive... but now what about the negative... that red plastic thing you had in your hand at the beginning of the video... how did you make that??? see, i have a wooden model of what i want... and i want to make a fiber glass version... but in order to do that i need to make a negative on my wood model! can you tell my how to do that???

  • you instructed to ...rub it off. hahaha

  • can I just use wax and Vaseline for mold release on my plug ?

  • what type of geal coat did you used? Is it the same as tooling geal coat?

  • I made a mold w/o using any kind of mold release. I been trying for ever to take it out, nothing. Any tips?

  • wait

i bought a can full of gel that says fiberglass

and i just filled the mold with it

  • super video thumps up

  • Cool vid, one Q though;

What's the difference between the blue-ish resin(?) you start with and the brownish resin you start using at 3:40 till finish?

  • damn your fast as fuck dude lol

  • @skipjagger the better thing~ don't put too much acid so u can manage ur time more better, if an expert user, met can be finish in 3-4 minute's and no need to wait 1 day~ mayb punk just wanna let it clear by using 1 day period. XD

  • i use gelcoat but he make brush marks ? what i will do maybe its not original ?

  • I like your technique! ...no ther mold release agent other than wax, huh? ...quick and easy....nice quality finished part!

  • @TheLipRipp3r sometimes, using shoes wax also can~ but didn't have the same quality like that one.

  • Excellent video. You make it look so easy that I'm going to give it a try. Too bad the douche bags had to kill your audio.

  • i want to make a custom part for a aircraft, how can i find or can i make a mold for it?

  • @watersfall1 u can create it by ur self using cardbord n some other material and combine it together. no need to creat a lot of layer~ after undercoat, one layer is enough already. XD

  • Where did you get that paint gun and what did it cost? I bought a cheap harbor freight top feeder. It worked, but barely sprayed, it got all clogged and I just threw it away. I need something that can spray gel coat cheap, and that doesn't cost $50 worth of chemicals to clean out each time. Can I just brush on my gelcoat?

    Thanks!

  • I would like to make fiberglass headlight covers for my suzuki burgman 650. I don't have a spare headlight to build fabricate on top of. is it possible to use the headlights on the scooter? maybe use some saran wrap and use the release wax on top of that and go from there?

  • I see that the mold itself is red, is that also a gelcoat?

  • @JustWonderingHowToDo hehe~ get ur self XD

  • Nice f*in vid man. Thanks

  • cool

  • hi

    its good woork

i want to ask you about mold what is the red color ?

i have mold but i need the red color what is ?

  • @Mrhadiiiii it's not a good idea to change the color. let it be~ it just a mold. trust me.

  • I laughed out loud at "VRX thumbs up!"

  • Fking Love It!

    Favs!

    Thank You So Much M8!!!

  • Could you please tell me what is the white thing you sprayed first. Could you please tell me the full name of product and name of company that produce it. Thank you. ( I can't find it anywhere in stores in my country,so I could order it on-line. Thank you once more.)

  • nice vid !! :) was thinking on fixing my rusted out rear wheel wells on my truck....using fiberglass sheets...any tips?

  • And thanks for all your help, you truly have inspired me!

  • Here you use the cleaning gun to spray gelcoat and the other vid shows you using 3.0 mm tipped gun.(I know you used a 3.5mm)

    1. If you had to use the cleaner or the gun with a 2.5mm tip, would you use the gun?

    2. If you made a mold that you wanted to get 20-25 pieces out of it before having to make another mold, how thick would you make the mold? I'm using .75 oz and 1.5 oz csm.

  • nice work dude good explenations too .p.s nice car lol ive got a tf magna lol wish i had a vrx awd :(

  • ingeniuussssss

  • Great how-to. No BS, just info.

  • nice work

  • hey i wanna make a whole entire fiberglass hood for my thunderbird..

can i use the stock hood as a mold??

and just add the scoop and then put the fiberglass on top??

    will it work??

  • @DYNO323 Its not as simple as that, you need to flange it properly. The Part you want to me a dupe of is called a plug, the mold is the negative that you make.

  • @DYNO323 if you have never made or used a plug working with fiberglass i would advise to not try a project as big as a hood of a car, mostly for safety reasons 2nd would b wasting money. But all in all its a learning process just start small

  • how mutch air presure you took when you was spraying the gelcoat?

    gr

  • @Martijndehaas I dont spray gelcoat very often so I cant remember 100%, but it was slow with this gun so it splatters.

  • Hey- what is the original mould part?? if you are making a fiberglass copy, what is the mould made out of and how did you construct that my friend. This is the crucial step that is relivant to making any fiberglass copies. Please either post a vid or let me know the first steps before you actually do the rest of the steps after the mould. I need to know how to construct the mould first brother :) Thx Man! gr8 vid by the way! two thumbs up my friend :)

  • @btucker1975 Check my other vids brother!

  • @btucker1975 the mold also made by fiber~ anyway~ u need to have the original item and create the mold~ don't 4get to wax the original item becouse we didn't want to spoiled the mold. n u need to make it faster becouse we didn't want the resin getting hard b4 the work finish~ n one more thing, it's more better to cut the unneed part with grind. it's sure itchi. XD

  • Nice Video! Great details and advises, but how did you do the mold?

  • @eKettle check my other videos, i have a mold one too.

  • Reading through your comments you mention that the resin truns from blue to brown as it gets to the point where it becomes unusable. About how much time is that normally?

Also I'm thinking about making some interior pieces for my car, like stereo surround trim and dash trim to replace brittle plastic. What grade and how many layers would you suggest for an application like that?

    Excellent videos, by the way.

  • @gpmarine1 For Polyester resin when mixed right it should be 10-15 minutes before it gels up.

When starting fiberglass always get a light grade to start. Get 0.75 oz chopped matte grade, and you can peel it in half to get even lighter stuff.

  • cheers man good vid! why bother with the vrx tho u could of spent ur time working on something decent lol

  • cheers man good vid! why bother with the vrx tho u could of spent ur time working on something decent lol

  • great vid! thanks!

  • Your first few layers seemed to be made using a blueish colored resing. then some layers afterward it looked more similar to the all-purpose kind I ended-up using before I knew there were better/different grades. What kind is that blue kind? and what is the purpose of spraying the gelcoat first?

  • My resin comes in blue, the change to brown is to show you how far into the cure it is, when it gets dark brown is becomes unusable. ITs the same type of resin I am using. Gelcoat goes first because your making a reversed part, so the first coat will be the toplayer, gives a UV and paint like finish.

  • can u answer this for me:the resin is the liquiq use to melt the fiblrglass right?.... got a problem with my resin it dry and become solid. how to melt it back?.. help me...

  • the resin is the fiberglass in liquid form, once it has hardened you cannot turn it back into liquid, sorry. Either start again or try and fix by cutting/sanding back.

  • great tutorial.tq so much :)

  • What did u make that mold out of?

  • where can I find that spray gun you use to spray the gel coat

  • Brilliant,thanks.

  • Have you ever used fiberglass chop? if so can you post a video?

i have used mat in the past and am considering using it for some future projects.

    thanx in advance

  • Chopped strand? Its just mat without the glue holding it together, you can buy it in bags or pull apart some mat and make some yourself. It does come in handy for very curvy surfaces.

  • could you mixed chopped strand with the resin and apply it like (for lack of a better description) mortar? or do you like it would be to big of a pain to get the glass to resin ratio right?

  • No that doesnt work, there would be to much resin. There is product that can do that tho, turns it into a paste with very small strands to stop it being to brittle, dont know much about it.

  • @superdan50 he is using chop strand matting or CSM

  • the trailer hitch on the car ruins it

  • but is necessary xD

  • Thanks for this.

Im making a boat for my school project (model of course ;) )

Ive read up alot on fibreglassing tequnicques. Do i need to put the gelcoat on with a spray, and if so would an empty spray bottle (for detergeants and stuff) be ok? OR can i brush it on? Aslong as the contact surface is good i dont see if that would matter.

  • Brushing is fine. Get a descent quality brush that wont leave streaks, dont leave any thin spots.

  • THanks.

    Got a decent brush :)

Need to film me doing it a sproof of me doing for school.

    may post it on lol

  • Terrific! Thanks! Ive got an old boat that couls use some fiberglass work! And I race vintage motorcycles as well...Hmmm I could make a gas tank! Heh heh...maybe some day...

  • hey you have realy good vids thanks for posting them for us to pick up some of your skill, i just wanted to ask what cleaning gun is that your useings iv been trying to find it and everything iv searched comes up for pistol/gun cleaning tools

  • I would just go to the local auto store, im not sure which are the franchises in the US. Kero gun, cleaner gun, degreaser gun.

  • How hard is it after its done etcs? I'm thinking of making a sorta robitic look costume etcs, and was thinking of using this its a preety basic costume and just mainly has flat surfaces but I was also wondering if after would it be fine to literally wear it as it is etcs?

  • I would avoid touching raw fiberglass onto skin, sealing it with primer/paint would do it.

  • Ahh alright thanks~ I'll probs wath some of your other videos since I've been wanting to make a few meha outfits rescently x3

  • i am trying to make a costume. and was wondering if i gould fiberglass a foam mold? and what that 2 squirts was in the gelcoat? where did you get that spray? what was the blue stuff you put on the after the gelcoat? was that stuff the same as the stuff after the matte?

  • You can make a foam 'plug' and make a fiberglass mold from it. What is spray? Blue stuff is the early stage of polyester resin, as it cures it changed to a light brown. Yes all the resin is the same stuff it just changes colour.

  • hi i have to do a presentation on fiberglass would you say its easy to use or is it difficult also does it take practice to make something good?

  • I would say yes and yes. The products, techniques and the lack of mainstream education in the field makes it a hard trade to learn.

  • what do you use to make the mold that you put the fiberglass onto?

  • tooling gelcoat and fiberglass. See my mold making vids.

  • Thank you for oploading these videos, you really saved my day. I'm in Europe and I can only find fiberglas mats, do you chop it up yourself? I study design and I want to make a hood, I was thinking I would make a clay form, do you think this would work? Thank you for you time, anything questions you have on jewelry, you just ask, I'm a goldsmith. Olga

  • dude, i love in the manlyest way possible without it being gay!!!

how expensive is it to do this? for a begginer?

  • lol, maybe a few hundred to start molding. All products and basic tools.

  • oh :S a bit more than i thought. i wanted to do RC nitro car shells.

  • Well it would depend on if your copying existing shells or making your own from scratch. Big price diff.

  • i would make a ''dummy'' shell out of cradboard first, and mold the fiberglass shell inside, or outside the ''dummy'' shell.

  • I would use a polyurethane foam block instead... floral foam.

  • good job

  • No need for a filler when doing good molds like in the video. Nice and light parts.

That masking tape part was pretty good move. I usually just stick some sharp object like knife from mold edges and pry it little at time and try to get hot water in it then. Pops out instantly when water gets in between mold and glassed part, because mold release is water based solvent.

  • Yes good for plug removal. Ill tell you another trick with mold release. Glassing a male air valve to connect to your compressor line pops out a mold like a cannon. Its a really neat trick but will leave a small defect where the valve is. Good for rough stuff like these boxes.

  • (I learned this the hard way and had to pull a resined sliver of glass out and explain to my girl I didn't get an STD, just a jerk across the table with a careless diegrinder!) I'm not trying to harsh your mellow, it's awesome you're spreading the how-to info, and DIY is always better, just don't want to see any kids get hurt.(I got a buddy with one eye from an accident w/ Fiberglass, he's pretty sick of the pirate jokes.)

  • For the Carbon Fiber Lovers-The body has NO method of encapsulation for carbon fiber, therefore it can cause way more damage. Really, the point is, please don't teach anyone bad habits. Safety is REALLY important. Eye protection, gloves, Sound SOP, there's a reason for these things. Also, wear an apron, it'll help protect Mr.Happy when you trim your edge!)

  • Fiberglas is encapsulated by the body and usually pushed out, BUT it internally can buildup micro-scar tissue which can detach, migrate, and accumulate anywhere in the fine capillaries of the body, including Mr.Happy and the brain.(end product being having a stroke while you're wondering why you can't "have a stroke"-impotency)

  • 2:48- Proof Michael Jackson was a moldmaker! Sorry, but two gloves is always a good idea. I understand, familiarity of material breeds nonchalance, but hey,

ultimately it boils down to this. Resin, gelcoat, and anything catalyzed with or containing MEKP is extremely toxic. MEKP goes though your skin to your toxin-mitigation organs(Liver, Kidneys,tc.) and causes

all sorts of damage, and eventually cancer.

  • I have been wanting to make new panels for my car doors. My dad cut holes in the doors for speakers that didn't fit in the dash. They ended up falling out all the time and people wouldn't notice them falling out so they would be left behind.

  • lol. A simple adapter plate or spacer will do the job. But you could make some door pods to be fancy.

  • thats nice but all that for that lil thang no thanxxx il just w8 till l8er to do that lol but thanxx nicevid 5/5 and i subed....=p

  • ok so u made the mold, but what did u use to make the mold of the mold in the first place?

  • Thats called the plug. I made it on my car with masking tape some release agent and a bit of planning. This video is only intending to show mould layup. Head over to fiberglassforums[dot]com and search for eyelids, i have a thread about the plugs there, but no video.

  • When doing a mold, lets say i do my own wheel arch. How do i reverse the mold to fit the other side?

    Thanx

  • You cant, you have to make two.

  • no, did not understand my question.I meant as ever to put the gelcot the gun he used to wash the car and not the paint?

  • Still doesn't make sense sorry.

  • Thanks for the advise on the gun pressure! With this method, I like the fact that it seems like you're not getting a bunch of overspray when applying the gelcoat...

  • Nice trick with the cleaning gun! What air pressure setting works well for spraying Gelcoat? Thanks

  • thanks. 60-70 psi

  • what is thet white tihng you spray?explane me all steps please:D thx

  • The white thing is gelcoat, im not explaining all the steps, watch my other videos first.

  • When using a plug do i just put parting compount and then the fibre glass on top and then spray the finished product with gel coat on the out side or how do I do it?

  • When using a plug to make a mould you need to spray the gelcoat first(after applying the parting compounds) then apply the fiberglassing ontop for some strength, thats it.

  • And how can I get a smooth finish on the out side, with a color of my choice, the gelcoat, in your meathod, would be on the inside of my object, thus useless to me and not visible, Really i would need a set up that goes: Plug, parting compound, fibreglass, gelcoat or plug, parting compound, gelcoat, fibre glass, gelcoat. Is this possible?

  • Dont think I understand what you mean. Outside surface of a mold is usless and doesnt need to be smooth. You can finish the outside of a mold with gelcoat or flowcoat but you will not get it smooth so easily. If you pm me exactly what your trying to do maybe I can help more.

  • what is the reason to using gel coat, all i find it usefull for on my bodykit, is to crack and chip, and cost a fortune at the panelbeaters when i decide to go and get it repaired

  • Gelcoat protects the raw fiberglass from the elements. It also provides a paintable/sandable surface. Gelcoat will always chip when hit with enough force. Gelcoat is more crack prone on edges, corners and when applied or layered to thick, which happens allot if brushing gelcoat.

  • Okay forgive me if this is an easy question because I'm not really familiar with this process. How did you get your head lights that kinda hot rod red color in the last part of your video. Did you use some color after you finished the mold or did you add it to your gel coat or something like that? There is something I want to make and those head lights are the exact color that I want to create.

  • They were for a customer. He wanted it to match his body colour. I went to the local mitsu dealer(with a paint dep) and ordered some of his colour from the colour code on the vin plate, every car should have a colour code. I primed the gelcoat with a 2 part epoxy primer, sanded it back to 600grit wet and sprayed several light top coats of the colour that the dealer sold me. It matched his car colour perfectly. If you just want a shade of red go to a local paint shop and they will mix it up.

  • Badass vid, thx

  • how did you make the mold? maybe a vid on mold making?

  • VXR thumbs up lol

  • More good info

Don't listen to the armchair knockers

    Keep the vids coming

How about a vid on making a plug to take the mold off?

Got a couple of projects that have to start from scratch

    Cheers

    Utooth

  • cheers, I plan to make a howto vid on plug creation. I plan to make my videos more involved with commentary instead of music/text. But im disabled at the moment after having a collision on my motorbike, might be months before I can make another video...

  • u...are...bad...ass....nice!

  • how many layers did you put?

  • 5-7 layers of 300g(per sq meter) chopped strand. This will give about 4-5mm thickness.

  • mat and not cloth? blasphemy! : )

as cheap as cloth is I would never use mat

  • ...an obvious newbie. Care to give an 'accurate' reason?

  • well I would say higher strength, naturally even layers, doesn't break apart as you put it on. basically why the pros use cloth.. punk :)

why do you use mat? you find it faster?

  • the strength difference is very little, and remember its strength to WEIGHT. Cloths are very good when laying up in a SINGLE PIECE. As soon as you start chopping it up into little squares its going to have same characteristics as matte. Matte is the standard, you only differ from matte if you have a reason to. The pros have a purpose for anything they use. matte is easier, cheaper, has more flex, high tolerance, breaks apart easily without cut tool and without effecting strength. (pro not con)

  • How come everybody seems to jump to the conclusion that Woven Roven (cloth) is stronger than Matte?

I've built fiberglass boats ranging from 10 feet up to 75 foot double deckers. Trust me, Matte is stronger than Roven, lol.

Nice job punk28186. Just one question, why didn't you go over it with a steel roller?

You may have tried this, but for some reason a lot of people don't think of it. Instead of using a brush, try out a paint roller. You may need a brush for some of the tighter areas though.

  • Finally someone with some experience and knowledge to back up there comment, thanks.

Metallic roller is not needed for this mould I get all air out with a brush, roller just makes it worse with this mould.

I use paint rollers to wet+roll when laying up large pieces with no sharp curves. I will bring it up in a future video.

  • No problem, lol.

Like you said, sometimes a steel roller is not really needed, I try to use it if I can but sometimes it just doesn't want to cooperate.

My latest project is an 18 foot speedboat for myself. I figured I've built enough boats for other people, time to do one for me, lol. I might take a mold off of it after, not sure yet. After spending 12 years working with glass I really don't feel like taking orders for more boats, lol.

One last tip, don't get a HOT shower after glassing.

  • yes ive heard that plenty, with your pores opening etc. But ive done my own experiments on the subject and I cant see a difference, hot or cold I can still feel a bit of itch afterwards.

  • I've found it doesn't need to be cold enough to send you into a cardiac arrest, lol. I have it warm enough that it isn't what you would call cold, more like a luke warm, and have next to zero itch. But, If I have it good and hot, I can feel the itch start almost immediately, lol.

I've also heard washing yourself with milk is supposed to help, lol. I haven't tried that one myself though, lol. Neither do I have any intention of trying it, lol.

  • Thanks a bunch for giving me the heads up on glass work. I'm ripping the dash out of my led sled and I'm going to make a new one out of glass. Why? So I can mount my DVD screen in my dash right above the glove box.

  • interesting and very informative

  • Im starting to get into fibreglassing but the main problem im having is finding cheap supplies. Where is the best place to buy it from without getting ripped off ?

Nice VRX! You already a member on the Aussie Magna forums ?

  • go to your nearest FGI dealer, google it. Yes I am a member of AMC and I sell all of these things on there.

  • nice i was planing to buy a gelcoat gun but i don have alot of money but i du have a cleaning gun tanks for the tip ni video. I see that you like to do your on stuf.

  • Unfortunately, WMG has been combing the internet looking for anything they own copyrights to and telling YouTube to disable the video's sound when they find thoer music- I have had it happen to me and I have seen the same message in a lot of other places-- So if you have the original movie file, you will have to re-record it without the music or they will just disable it again.. Otherwise- cool video, wish I could hear it
