Who and what God is doesn't matter. It's what you do that matters. Shiv is also an interpretation of life force, which does exist. The idols and different Gods that we, Hindus, pray to are akin to motivational posters. Whether or not the Gods existed is missing the point. So long as a concept or idea gives us something good to focus on, inspires and invokes good thoughts within, we should expose ourselves to it. If a fictional book inspires you to do good deeds, should anyone look down upon it?

If a poem leads you to understand your mistakes and then rectify it, would that be something someone else should scoff at? No. And so to help people stay inspired and continously think good thoughts, Hinduism adopted many methods to sustain that sort of motivation.
The whole idea of Hinduism aka Sanātana Dharma is not to become slaves to someone or thing. It is to become a better human being. That's all.

Many gurus, saints, enlightened people go through a process which Hinduism encourages: to move from worshipping 'Gods' to being able to stand without the crutch or training wheels the concept of God provides us.
