OSHA was taking the video. They shut the job down due to wind speed and as they were leaving the crew tried to set the structure anyways. The OSHA reps were taking the video as evidence of non compliance, never expecting this.
that crane is not 45 million dollars like Tampaslice said ....im sorry but its more like 450000-plus but no where near 45 million that building wasnt that much
check the white flag at top right of building @ 0:20 it's ripping in the wind. @ 0:59 the men are struck in the smaller crane holding their basket. God Bless Those Men.
This kind of thing happens all too often. Any of my brothers out there who work around cranes, be careful. As you can see, it happens fast. Don't take safety for granted...
i just learned about this in my OSHA class. out of all the comments i have read about it, not one mentions the fact that the first operator of that crane refused to work in the dangerous winds and they got someone else to do it. 400 tons of steel in the air and high winds dont mix. its called common sense! i wish more people had it!
@sma0485 Not always a matter of common sense. Problem is idiots higher up who crunch numbers and demand things get done no matter what. Sad, but true.
$45 million dollar crane turned into scarp metal in 20 seconds. Glad to see the crane operators running away after ground supports popped out. As soon as the screeching started the 3 guys that perished had to have known they were gonna die. If crane fell to the right cameraman would be 6 ft under as well. Wnd was out of limits, defy regulations....pay the price.
the screeching you heard was the brakes failing that hold the cranes cargo in place due to the wind at that height. the pops u heard was the bolts that held the mast shooting into the ground. you can see as the camera panns towards the crane the dust from some.
wow ok first those werent the brakes.those were the workers grinding on the structure.and second the crane was bolted as a permanent structure to the ground.and third NO bolts hold the mast on.WTF is a mast anyway?
Amazing video. The Godzilla scratching his nails on a chalkboard sound was a pretty good sign something bad was about to happen. When the right side supports gave way it sounded like CDI was involved. Shame 3 guys had to die just to rush the job!
I'm a retired Ironworker . This is typical of bosses who want to do more than is possible. Probably high winds. I never set a whole section of roof puttogether like that before
I know squat about construction, but I was kinda thinking the same thing. I know cranes are supposed to be extremely sturdy for obvious reasons, but that section it was lowering just appeared too massive to NOT set off some type of mishap.
see thats your problem, nothing is impossible after all america is said to have put the first man on the moon yet they cant even put a roof truss on a stadium lol...only pple with small minds think things are impossible,if everyone was like you nothing would get done lol
As soon as i heard them huge "gong" sounds my stomach started to turn. Imagine what the poor men would have been thinking during the last few seconds of their lives..
The shreaking sounds like friction brakes on the works. Was it a hydraulic or friction crane? The "booms" escape me. My safety engineer told me he heard bolts fail(?) some where on the crane. I don't think its in the base section of the lattice because thats still attached after the crash. It almost looks like the boom hit the front girder. Can you get the Discovery chan. version of this anywhere? At any rate,3 men lost their lives. Dangerous job, but preventable.
it was a friction crane the booms are the tunn table blots sheering off u can clearly see that he was not levled very very very sad im a crane opperater and that scared the shit out of me
Man...as soon as I heard creaking, I was like, "Oh fuck...". That sucks that the crane crash demolished half the building, which probably took months to build...
I'll never forget the day after I first saw this video a few years ago. I was rigging for a lift with two 1400's the next day (nothing nearly as big) and had to be right between the two. This video is the reason I've refused to rig a few times on windy days. Being safe is a lot smarter than being dead or causing someone else harm.
2 people from my union died in this accident.....it had nothing to do with the weight of the load, infact that crane "big blue" is designed to handle almost a third more than the weight being lifted....it was a windy day and all wind tests were taken but one.....the outside winds were just under legal limit of operation.....
We watched this video in our certification training. Is it tru that the operator that normally operated the crane would not make the lift, and they got someone else. We were told that the someone else was a backhoe operator?

a stupid crane operator and a job super that didnt pay attention to the weather report...there were very high winds about 60 feet off the ground and that crane was pushed to it's limits with the load it was bearing so just the slightest breeze blew it over..

The screeching is probably the frame and supports / counterbalance at the base bending before it breaks
