I think he was being sarcastic in reply to your carrying on. If they kept the shark they probably would have eaten it. Humans, like animals eat other living things in order to survive. Nothing cruel here.

The mindset behind the 'sport' of shark fishing is still one of unnecessary, exploitative hunting. , UNLIKE other animals, we do not have to eat other beings (plants have no nervous system)to survive. We are decimating the seas with our self-serving behaviors. Sharks serve an important role in the ocean ecosystem. Yet they are targeted terribly, often because of the reputation we humans bestow upon them.
Nothing but of supremist, self-serving load of humanity. You are the killing machines. You have a conscience, and yet you let others suffer for sport. Way to go up the ladder of moral progress.
Just FYI - it was too small to keep - so we threw it back. If it was large enough to keep, I would have been certain to punch it a couple of times in the face before killing it by stuffing a grenade it its mouth.

i did that in mid july. we caught 2 blacktips about that size, and a 7 1/2 foot long tiger shark that was around 350lbs

no, we didn't keep it. the minimum to keep the sharks was 4.5 feet in length. and this one was probably just shy of 4 feet.
